"Disney was wrong. There isn't always a happily ever after for the princess. Or, in my case, shard detector." Kagome sobbed to her mirror. "But it's over now. Naraku is dead. Inuyasha has gone to fulfil his promise to Kikyo. At least I got to say goodbye. At least I got to tell Inuyasha that I love him. But I also know now that he never reciprocated the feeling."
A pair of amber eyes peered through the open window at the girl who was tearfully talking to her reflection.
/Kagome./
Inuyasha had realized he loved Kagome early on in their adventures, but with Kikyo around, he couldn't go to the girl from the future. He had debts to pay, and there was a good chance he would lose his life doing so.
But that was before.
*Flashback*
"Kikyo."
"Why are you here, Inuyasha?"
"I...It's time for me to pay my debt to you, now that Naraku has been defeated."
"And what debt is that?"
"To pacify your soul. If necessary, by my death."
Kikyo moved toward Inuyasha, brushing back a bit of hair from his eyes. "You still believe you have a debt to pay? Inuyasha, Naraku is dead." She put a finger to his lips as he attempted to reply. "No. My soul is as pacified as it can ever be. It belongs to another now, as does your heart. You feel that you owe me, but you are wrong. I have relented to the fact that I am no longer the Kikyo I was all those years ago. Kagome is my reincarnation. She has most of the soul that we shared. Thus, if you are still indebted to anyone, it is her. Go to her."
"But Kikyo-"
"Do not say that you love me. We both know that is a lie. Let us part now. You need Kagome more than I could ever need you. Goodbye Inuyasha."
Inuyasha stood in shock as she left with her soul-catchers. Kikyo was right, of course.
*End flashback*
Inuyasha jumped through the open window and pulled Kagome into his arms. "I'm sorry," he choked into her hair, "for everything. I'm so sorry."
Kagome stood, stiff with shock.
Inuyasha backed away, keeping a firm grip on her forearms. "Kagome..."
"But Kikyo-"
"Sent me to you. My debt to her is paid. However, I still have a debt to pay to you."
"What are you talking about, Inuyasha?"
"Kagome, you taught me to live again. You cared for me, even as the hanyou I am, though I never showed you kindness in return. I owe you for teaching me what it really means to be happy. For staying with me. If you'll let me, I'll spend every day of my life trying to make it up to you. I love you, Kagome."
"Inu...yasha," she cried, flinging herself towards him. He caught her up in a fierce hug.
"Kagome, I love you so much."
"And I you, Inuyasha."
Perhaps Disney was right after all. Some shard detectors did get their prince.
