Chapter One: The Zoo

"What's going on? Did Jackie scare another kid?" Frank asks as the group comes out into the open of their pens hearing a kid scream on the monitor.

"Yep. She's such a ham. The show hasn't even started yet." Zoe says as she catches a fly.

"She didn't bite anyone did she?" Nigel asks.

"No. Just scared them much like I did my first time out. Though because of the other wolves picking on me I got stuck back in here." Alexis says as she looks at her leg still healing from last week's bite wound.

"But at least you got us now." Nigel says as he looks at Alexis.

"Right. Sounds like it's show time for you guys. Good luck out there." Alexis says as the group hears a horn before people come into the room and take Zoe, Nigel and Frank as Chaz comes over.

"Hey girl. How's that leg doing?" Chaz asks.

"Better than it was." Alexis says as she smiles and wags her tail while only appearing to bark to Chaz.

"That a girl. Time for your check up with it too." Chaz says as Alexis looks at him as he opens the cage as two men come over with a cage.

"Good luck out there Maddie. I'll see you when I'm done." Alexis says as she sees Maddie wake up and nod as she is taken into the cage and leaves the room with the two men.

*Timeskip*

"Alright girl in you go." Chaz says as he puts Alexis in her cage and leaves before turning off the main lights.

"Sorry I'm late getting back Maddie. Took longer than I was expecting. Hey is everything?" Alexis asks as she sees Maddie giving a sad look.

"Not good. I'm not beautiful. I'm a monster." Maddie says sadly.

"Because a few humans screamed?" Jackie asks.

"They were terrified Jackie. I... I made them cry." Maddie says sadly.

"So? Have some fun with it. I do. That's not who we really are. It's what in our hearts that truly counts not what we're labeled. You can be whoever you want. So who cares what a bunch of silly humans think?" Jackie asks.

"But... but Chaz said that they'd love me. He said I was special." Maddie says sadly.

"And you are special." Jackie says.

"No. Not in that way. Not like him. People love him. They line up for hours just to hug him. No one's ever gonna wanna hug me." Maddie says as she looks at a screen and sees Pretty Boy.

"I would." Alexis says as she smiles at Maddie.

"But you're my friends. You already like me unlike the humans." Maddie says as Alexis looks at her sympathetically.

"Aw. You know what you need? A nice bedtime story to cheer you up. Now you kids were brought here when you were just babies so you wouldn't remember anything about the outback." Jackie says.

"Oh I do I do. I mean not much but uh just a song my mum used to sing." Maddie says shyly as Alexis smiles at her.

"Would you sing it to us Maddie?" Alexis asks as Maddie smiles at her.

"Of course... if you don't mind to howl along with me Alexis." Maddie says as Alexis nods.

"I'd love to Maddie." Alexis says as Maddie begins singing a lullaby as Alexis howls along to her singing.

"Aw that's beautiful hon. Your mum must've loved you very much. And your howling Alexis is simply stunning." Jackie says.

"Thank you." Alexis says as she smiles.

"I wish I'd known her." Maddie says.

"Well can't say I ever met her but before I came here I visited a lot of places in the outback." Jackie says.

"What was your favorite place?" Nigel asks.

"Oh boy that's a tough one. I think my favorite place is the mountains where I grew up. They're the most beautiful mountains in the world. Tall as the sky! Red as a bushberry. Except at sunset when they turn the true color of the outback. And that's the place where all of you come from. And I know that one day you're gonna find your way back to those mountains and meet your families. Now go to sleep my babies. First show's always the hardest hon. It gets easier. I promise." Jackie says as everyone goes to sleep.

*Timeskip*

"What's going on? There's sirens sounding from everywhere." Alexis says as the others except for Jackie are thrown into their cages as sirens blare outside.

"It's Jackie. They thought she was attacking Chaz's son but she was just trying to help." Maddie says before the group sees on screen Jackie is being captured and taken.

"Oh no!" Alexis says in alarm.

"Leave her alone! She didn't do anything! She was just trying to help! Jackie!" Maddie shouts as she tries to break out of her enclosure to no avail.

"I'll take a closer look okay?" Zoe says as she gets out of her enclosure and goes outside before coming back and shaking her head sadly.

Life story: Alexis was born in the mountains with her mother and her father. She is the only one of her litter. Her parents and pack both were killed when she was 3 by another wolf and his pack. Thanks to her mother she survived the slaughter and was raised by her adoptive family.
