" Are you coming, darling?"
Fred sighed contentedly, flopping down on the loveseat beside Wesley and resting her feet in his lap. " I'm here, I'm here. I had to get popcorn!" to illustrate her point, she held up the big yellow bowl of popcorn and then brought it back into her arms, holding it protectively while she munched.
" And I imagine that I'm getting none of said popcorn, am I correct?"
Fred beamed, nodding. " You are SO smart," she said. Wes chuckled. " So, what are we watching tonight, anyway?"
Wesley picked up the remote control. " It's a movie called 'Ever After'; a spin on Cinderella, I believe. Man at the movie store told me that it was quite good for a romantic night."
Fred raised her eyebrows. " Cinderella? The fairy tale? Aw, Wes, I hated fairy tales as a kid."
Wes jolted, staring at her in astonishment. " How could you possibly hate fairy tales, Fred? They are vital ingredients to every child's growth! They have all the right elements of a good story: horror, fantasy, mystery, magic, jealousy betrayal, and love. What's not to like?"
" They aren't really all that scientific."
Wes snorted. " Oh, please, Fred. That's a horrible excuse. Honestly, what don't you like about them?"
Fred shrugged, popping a piece of popcorn into her mouth. " All those princesses always made me feel ugly, I guess. I could identify with the ugly stepsisters—they didn't really have looks, but they had opportunity, just like me. I just wasn't mean like they were. At least, I don't think I was, but considering the politics of high school, I very well could have been and nobody would have told me, because that's just the way girls work, and…what?"
Wes' jaw had dropped. " You're surely joking."
Fred giggled and threw a piece of popcorn right into his open mouth. " So you're saying that I'm not the ugly stepsister?"
" You want the honest truth?" Leaning forward, Wes took Fred's chin and pulled her face to his, kissing her softly and sweetly. When he pulled away a few moments later, he smiled. " I think you're the most beautiful thing I've ever laid eyes on."
Fred was grinning slyly, ear to ear. " You know," she whispered playfully. " I actually don't mind fairy tales at all. I like them."
Wes raised an eyebrow. " So all that ranting was just to get me to kiss you, even though all you had to do was ask?"
" Pretty much," Fred replied. " But I think it was worth it, don't you?"
Wes nodded as her arms twined around his neck, pulling him closer. " My favourite part always was when they kissed at the end."
" Mine, too."
