Fear of the Forbidden
Chapter 4
Galadriel's Mirror
Aragorn was as good as his word. He did not go after Legolas. The banquet celebrating his engagement to Arwen was a real feast, with music and entertainment. Had one not known Aragorn well, it would be impossible to tell that his mind was elsewhere.
The Twins had noticed, for they knew that Aragorn was only doing this to be incredibly stubborn. Lord Elrond knew for the same reason, and frowned upon the whole thing. He did not like the idea of his daughter being engaged to someone who did not genuinely love her, but was using this chance to show just how obstinate he could be.
Arwen herself did not notice Aragorn's odd behaviour. All she saw was that she was now engaged to the man whom she loved. All she was feeling was joy. She was much to happy to realize that Aragorn was acting strange.
Weeks later, Aragorn left Imladris. He claimed that he needed some time on his own to think about things. When he made this announcement, the twins exchanged worried looks. He was not acting like himself at all. They had no idea what they could do for him, but something had to be done. The day after Aragorn left, the twins went to confer with their father.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Ada, we must do something." Argued Elladan.
"My son, what do you propose that we do? Estel has a will of his own, as he has demonstrated most recently." Elrond said wryly.
"We cannot let him do this! There has been no word from Mirkwood, I find myself worrying about what state Prince Legolas might be in. There has to be something we can do!" Elrohir exclaimed, siding, as usual, with his twin. Elrond sat back looking pensive.
"Well, Lady Galadriel has informed me that a young hobbit has left the Shire with the One Ring. He is headed for Bree and is being hunted. Maybe If I can get word to Galadriel to do so, she may convince Aragorn to find them and bring them to safety. That will at least give us a way to get him back here. I must also call a council. We must discuss what is to be done about this threat to Middle Earth. However, maybe we can convince King Thranduil to send his son. We can also say that I would like to find out how Legolas is faring."
The twins sat in silence looking at their father. Then burst out into identical grins as they looked upon their fellow conspirator.
"That's a great idea ada!"
"You are just as bad as us when it comes to plotting things!"
"Well.... almost anyway."
Lord Elrond looked at his sons and laughed.
"Yes, I guess I am. Besides, you two had to get it from somewhere! Now, I have work to do..." The twins smiled, nodded and left. Once they left Elrond's smile melted into a frown.
"Almost? What else have they done?!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aragorn knelt down in front of the Lady Galadriel. He felt somewhat out of place. Ever since he had left Rivendel a few days ago, he had not been dressing in his fancy clothes. He had decided to become a ranger, for the time being anyway. He had been most surprised when a Lorien elf, Haldir, had come for him saying that the Lady requested his presence.
He had suspected that Galadriel would have wanted to speak with him because of his engagement to Arwen, her Granddaughter. Now that he knelt in her presence however, he suspected that there was something else afoot.
Her demeanour was a little too grim to be congratulating him. He looked up, and got that strange sensation that she was looking through his eyes and into his soul. He shuddered. The intensity of her blue gaze made him shudder involuntarily.
"Aragorn son of Arathorn. Please stand." Aragorn did as he was told. The lady of the wood turned and began to walk towards something. Aragorn, not needing to be told, followed her. It was plain what she wanted.
When they reached the place where Galadriel's mirror was, Aragorn stopped as the lady filled a pitcher with water, pouring it into the large mirror. Setting it down again, she turned to Aragorn.
"You know what it is you must do." Aragorn looked at her and nodded.
"I do."
"Then please step forward and gaze into the depths of the mirror and see what has been, what is, and what has not yet come to pass." Aragorn took a deep breath and walked up so he could look into the crystal clear water. His breath hissed in as he immediately saw a vision.
A beautiful elf with long golden hair, Legolas, lie on the forest floor crying. Anyone who looked at him could tell that his heart was broken. Another fled the scene, he too was upset, confused, hurt, but he did not know what to do. Worse, the guilt of what he had done to the other was now swamping him. Aragorn.
Now the golden beauty was riding on a horse away from Rivendel as fast as he could; running from problems. Problems which ,at that moment, sat at a large banquet celebrating his betrothal to the Evenstar.
It looked as if a few weeks had passed. Legolas looked pale and thin. Much to pale and thin. He stood in the forest; hand laying on an old tree as if seeking guidance. Suddenly he began to sing, his lone voice rising and falling with the melody of the song of a lost love.
"In my mind, I've got it all figured out
but the hurt
it does not always rule the heart
and I try to place him
out of body and soul
just when I thought I'd made it
these images start taking their toll on me
I feel his memory haunting me
time and again I feel weak
because
Every time I see your picture I cry
and I learn to get over you
one more time
because, every time I see your picture I cry
oh I cry...
There you rest
inside the walls of a frame
hurt so bad
can almost feel your eyes calling out my name
so, out of body and soul
you're everywhere I go
illusion or reality I don't know
I feel your memory haunting me
time and again, I feel weak
because
Every time I see your picture I cry
and I learn to get over you
one more time
because, every time I see your picture I cry
oh I cry..."
A young man, very short, with curly dark hair and furry feet, walked through a field where he soon met up with three other men, whom he apparently knew. They began running through the field, chased by a farmer. They fell down a hill and onto a road. The dark haired man stood up and looked fearfully down the road.
"Get off the road!" He yelled, all of them did so. Soon a black rider appeared, riding the horse that looked like it had just climbed out of a grave somewhere.
Legolas ran nimbly down the stairs of a large stone castle. It was night and raining. Orcs poured over the land and Legolas shot arrow after arrow. He was not the only one. There were many other elves there, including Haldir and there were men.
Some of these men were young, not more than boys, others were much older. There was a helmet just peaking over the wall that looked suspiciously like that of a dwarf.
Suddenly without warning, an arrow buried itself in Legolas' stomach. His bow fell forgotten and he slithered to the ground, his already fading body giving up completely.
"Legolas no!" Aragorn cried, pulling his eyes away from the mirror. He was panting as if he had experienced all of what he had seen first hand. It took him a few moments to remember where he was and what had just happened. A vision and nothing more. That did not, however, hide the brutality of what could happen.
"Tell me, can the future be changed?" He asked quietly. Galadriel looked at him with no trace of a smile on her face.
"Estel, hope of man. You have the power to change the future. You are the hope. I fear that the future is dark, I have foreseen many things. The ring bearer has left the Shire and his guide, Gandalf, has been taken by someone whom was thought to be a powerful ally. We know him now to be a powerful enemy. Sauron is massing his armies. You must find the hobbit Frodo Baggins and lead him to Rivendel."
"But... Legolas..." Aragorn whispered. Galadriel smiled.
"Only you have the power of change Estel. Much depends on you, Hope of Man."
Well, there is another chapter done. I have just realized that I have been using an elvish word, and I don't think I told you all what it meant. Ada: father. There we go. A HUUUUUGE thank you to my reviewers! *hugs her reviewers* It means so much to me! Hope you guys enjoyed this chapter just as much as the previous ones!
