After Chimera by Jolinar@Carter

"Hey, Carter," O'Neill smiled as he passed her on the way to the infirmary side room.

"Sir, what are you doing down here?" She asked.

"Oh just taking a walk. Thought I'd check in see how Miss Gardener is doing, and maybe have a little chat with Pete..." Jack replied casually.

"Okay. Be nice, sir," She shrugged, smiling and then walking off to get some dinner.

"Hello, Pete," He said, walking in to the room and shutting the door behind him. He sat down in the chair by the bed. "I am Colonel O'Neill, Sam's boss."

"Oh yes, she's been telling me all about you. I was wondering when you'd stop by," Pete nodded, shaking his hand. "I don't need to salute do I?"

"No...she told you about me huh? What did she say?" O'Neill grinned, sitting back in the chair.

"Just that she really loved working for you, you're a great boss. A good friend, she can trust you and turn to you...you know. That's good. She thinks very highly of you." Pete replied, taking a sip of the coffee she had brought him.

"Hmm, nice to know," He smiled, rather pleased. There was silence for a moment. "So I hear you're a cop?"

"Yes. I'm a friend of her brothers, from Denver," Pete nodded. "So, you travel to other worlds huh? Cool. We'll have to grab a beer and you can tell me all about it. And all the embarrassing things you must know about Sammie."

"Oh she's been through a lot Pete, it's not all fun and games. So I'm sorry if I don't tell you everything I know about her, because a lot of it I struggled to cope with myself. She's been in some real bad situations. Some of which she won't tell you about. Not for a while. Some she didn't tell me about for six months, even a year once. But if she holds back, don't push her. Because she'll tell you in her own time. All right?" He said carefully, emphasising every other word.

"Jeez, yeah. I can't imagine what kind of things could happen..."

"Trust me, doesn't pay to try." O'Neill sighed. He was sat up straight now, closer to Pete. His expression was very serious, and Sam said that didn't happen often. He was afraid now. "Look, Pete, I'm sure you're a very nice guy. But I'm going to say this anyway, so we're clear."

"Fine." Pete nodded, folding his arms.

"Samantha Carter is a good woman. She's one of the sweetest, funniest and strongest people I have ever known. She is incredible. And she deserves to be happy," Jack began, pausing now and again to think about his next words. "I care about her, a hell of a lot. And so do a lot of people in this mountain. So, Pete, I'm going to warn you now. If you ever do anything to upset that wonderful, wonderful woman...if you ever hurt her, physically, mentally, emotionally, whatever...you will have a knock at your door." He paused again. "And there, on your door step, will be 300 of Earth's best people. And, once they've all had a fair crack at you, there I will be, standing ready to rip you to pieces. Now, trust me here, Peter. When I say this, I do mean it. Once they've all had a fair crack at you, I will be standing there ready to mess you up so bad, that they'll be finding pieces of your body twenty years from now. Are we clear, Pete?"

"Crystal," Pete nodded, slightly pissed off, slightly pleased that Sam had such a good friend, and slightly worried.

"Good," O'Neill said. "I'll be watching."

And he left.

"Hey Sam," He smiled, as he passed her on his way out.

"Sir. You and Pete had a chat?" She asked.

"Yeah, we had a lovely chat." He nodded. "I'll see you later."

"Later sir," She nodded. She entered the room and sat down. "Hey, what did the colonel have to say?"

"We talked...about the weather."
