Part 3
School
"Congratulations, Miss Black, you've passed. Welcome to Meiou High," the principle smiled falsely at Rave, "here is a list of the supplies you'll need. I trust you'll have them by tomorrow. Report to my office the moment you arrive. Off you go now, I have much to do," he motioned the teenager out of his office and sat down at his desk again.
"I don't want to accept her," he thought as he rubbed his temples. "I don't like the look of her but," he looked at the ceiling as if looking for guidance, "her intelligence is too high. She rivals Mister Mianamino. Oh well, what's done is done." He returned his attention to the papers set before him.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ "Is something wrong?" Genkai asked her granddaughter. The girl had been oddly quiet after her interview with the principle.
"I'm fine," Raven replied. "That principle doesn't seem like a person I'm going to get along with easily or willingly is all." She scanned the list she had been handed. All that remained was her uniform. "Of all the stupid, blasted rules..." she muttered furiously.
"Did you say something?" Genkai inquired.
"Oh, it's the fact that I have to have a stinking uniform," she growled. "How much do you want to bet that the girls' uniform is a skirt?"
"Then get the uniform meant for boys," Raven jumped and turned. Standing behind her was the boy, Kurama. "It's generally not done but I get the feeling you personally don't care." His smile was kind.
"I like that idea." Raven said as she looked at the taller teenager. "Where do I get this stupid uniform anyway?"
"Right over there," Kurama pointed to a shop down the road.
"Thanks," Raven replied.
"Glad I could be of service," Kurama bowed and walked in the opposite direction.
Raven and Genkai slowly treaded down the sidewalk to finish their shopping.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Class, this is Raven Black," the teacher introduced after taking the note from the girl, explaining some of the minor details. A look of skepticism had crossed her features when she saw Raven wore the boys' uniform instead of the girls'. "She recently moved here form America. If you have questions, please, feel free to ask them."
"Just like a teacher to offer strange people a chance to interrogate someone," the teenager thought as she scowled.
"Where in America are you from?" someone inquired.
"Salt Lake City, Utah."
"Why'd you move here?"
"My parents were murdered and my only family lives here."
A couple of people murmured, "I'm sorry," and looked down at their desks. One boy was undaunted though. H raised his hand, a smirk played on his features. The teacher gave him leave to speak.
"Will you go out with me?" A few students snickered.
"Not even in your wildest dreams," Raven replied in English so no one could understand her. Just for good measure, she shook her had "no."
"Alright, that's enough," the teacher deliberately glared daggers at the boy. "Miss Black, if you would take the empty desk behind Mister Mianamino?" The class resumed to its normal pace. When they where finally given time to talk amongst themselves, Kurama turned in his chair to look at Raven.
"You made a wise decision when you decided not to date Jumpei," he said calmly in English. "He's considered to be one of the biggest players in the school."
"You understood every word I said to him, didn't you?" She asked with a slight wince.
"That and the few choice words you used to describe the lesson, your pencil lead, your backpack, and a few other things in the room, including the teacher." Kurama admitted with a half smile. "Frankly, I couldn't agree with you more on that lady," he nodded at the instructor.
"How wrong could she be?" Raven burst out. "For a World History teacher she knows next to nothing about every country she mentioned.
"Really?" Kurama was instantly intrigued. This, after all, was the first day the class was spending on the subject. "What all does she have wrong? I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with the topic."
Raven went into a detailed explanation on what their instructor had wrong and added other details that she knew. She found out that Kurama listened well and asked intelligent questions. She discovered she enjoyed talked with Kurama. She quickly became friends with the tall redhead. As the bell rang for lunch, the two were discussing another subject. Their topics ranged and changed constantly until they were speaking of plants. Their knowledge matched one another's perfectly.
"Have you heard of a plant called helkakuive?" Kurama asked, hoping to outwit this girl with his knowledge of rare plants. It didn't occur to him immediately that humans generally didn't know about it.
"Actually, I have a book on it," Raven replied as she dug in her bag. A she handed the book over; she realized that the text in that book held information meant for the eyes of very few people.
Kurama's eyes widened as eh flipped through the pages. His gaze met Raven's. "What are you?" he hissed in English to avoid eavesdroppers, "Where did you get this?" His vice deepened slightly and Raven could swear that his teeth were lengthening and sharpening into fangs. Small streaks of silver started appearing in hi hair.
"I-I-uh..." she stuttered.
"Trespasser," the now partially transformed youkai-kitsune growled dangerously.
"Not here," Raven muttered, alarmed at Kurama's transformation, "too many humans will witness your true form. We can't afford that." It wasn't helping any. Raven was just letting her temper rise. Her teeth had taken on the fang-like appearance and her hands were now forming into claws. She would soon start to grow wings.
"A deep rumble started in Kurama's throat. Soon, a full-fledged kitsune would loose his temper. The results could be disastrous. "Calm down, kitsune," Raven warned as she put her hand over his mouth to keep him from blowing his top or drawing attention. "I'm not here to take over your hunting lands."
Kurama took in the smell of the hand under his nose. "You're scent is familiar," he commented quietly behind Raven's hand as his human form once again took hold of his mind. "Answer me, who are you?"
Raven sighed heavily. "Now is not the time and this certainly is no the place," she commented, glancing around.
/Then we'll just use a form of communication that no on e can here./ The voice of Kurama sounded deeply in Raven's mind.
/All right, fox/ Raven gave in, /I'm Kitori. Who are you?/
/Kitori?/ He asked, /half-sister of Kurunoe?/
/Only two people ever knew that./ A tear trickled down the girl's cheek. "Who are you?" She pleaded for an answer. "They both died seventeen years ago."
"As I recall, you died then as well," Kurama commented.
"Don't do this to me," she begged quietly. "I've had cruel dreams before but this one's the worst." She hid her face in her hands as she shook her head.
"I'm real enough, sweet." The fox replied. "I'm alive and well, just as you are. We thieves have to watch out for one another, don't we?"
"No, no, no." The half kaze-youkai half Chimera protested. "You're dead. Don't do this to me. Leave me alone. Stop haunting me." She wouldn't look at the boy sitting before her. She broke down and started sobbing.
"It's okay, it's okay," the silver youkai-kitsune whispered as he drew the half-sister of his deceased friend and partner into his arms in a comforting embrace. "I'm here," he let his head rest on her's. A lump rose in his throat as he remembered both their deaths. The retreat from Kuronue's lifeless form was hard enough for him to bear but when the images of Kitori's last moments flashed though his mind, a few solitary tears rolled their way down his face.
It had happened moments before Kuronue had died but the memory was just as clear. Kitori had been laughing as they ran from the location of their biggest heist ever. Her dark, sapphire eyes shone with delight as she threw her head back in a triumphant yell. She had turned to look at her brother. Something caught her eye and her expression turned to fear and anger. She jumped and took the knife meant for her half-sibling in her back. "Run!" She had yelled to us, pulling the dagger out of her back, and throwing it into the throat of her killer. "I'm taking you with me!" She had yelled and started laughing. The sound died with her life and breath. Kuronue and Kurama started stumbling blindly ahead until Kuronue lost is pendent, went back for it, and was killed himself.
The memories faded and the silver fox felt the tears sliding down his cheeks. "I'm here," he repeated, "everything's going to be okay."
The bell rang and the two jumped. "We better get to class," Raven murmured. "Would you come by Genkai's after school? I would like a few things cleared up."
"Of course, Kit," Kurama replied, placing his hand on her shoulder. Raven didn't meet his eyes as she pulled out of his hold and sprinted to her next class as dried her eyes.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Well, that's it for part three. Hope you all enjoyed. Oh, and one more thing. I need a female character. I want height, hair color, eye color, personality, clothing style, race (demon, human, mix, etc.), who you want her to be paired with (if at all. Can't be Kurama, Hiei, or Shishi. No yaoi) and anything else I forgot. If I don't use yours, don't take it personally please. It could be someone else's was better than yours was, either that, or I just didn't like yours. In any case, review. Thanks.
