"Hey you're alive. Way to go." Accompanied with a shrug, that was the only thing Kenny said when I got back. He was once again poking at a bowl of mush, only now he was sitting on the top bunk of the bed staring at the camera.
When Harry came to get me, he looked at my new bruises and gashes without an inkling of emotion. No one did. If the mutant dies, then it dies. Who cares? It's just like a bloody lab rat. I felt a headache coming on, and I wondered if Kenny had only worsened my injury. That would be just fantastic.
A glop of mush fell on the floor and I looked up to see what Kenny was doing. He was spooning it into his mouth but making no attempt to keep it there.
"Kenny, do you mind if I ask you why you're acting like a retard?"
"Not at all." Shrug. He sat there and I realized he was waiting for me to actually ask him.
"Well, why are you?"
"For my own amusement."
"Are you actually retarded?"
"Not to my knowledge." He spooned more in then let it dribble down his shirt. I wondered if he really had come and fixed my skull last night. Maybe it had just been some brain damage induced hallucination. I sat on my bunk and rested my head in my hands. It all seemed hopeless. I was going to die here, and no one would remember me to care. They'd probably use me for mulch.
"Hey!" Kenny just about shouted. I nearly fell off the bed. "Don't go all, 'Sigh I'm doomed and therefore angsty,' on me. Cause if you do I'll have to kick your ass. Hear?" I was surprised, to say the least. Kenny didn't seem the type to get excited over anything. He was going to kick /my/ ass? I found myself nodding. "Good." Then he got a look on his face. Like he was thinking but that type of action was new and confusing to him. "Keep your ears open when you sleep. You never know with these people." It seemed practical advice, but he gave the impression that there was more to his statement than what I heard. Now I was the confused one.
"Eh?" I said. He shook his head. I could just imagine him saying, "Jeez, man. You're impossible."
I couldn't sleep in that cell. It freaked me out. Whenever I closed my eyes I felt some great ominous being slinking up on me. I don't know how one would fit in that cube, but that's how I felt. The other reason was the guard that was on duty. He kept humming some Beyonce song to himself. Then Kenny started to sing it. I began to wonder if I was cursed.
"John. You awake?" I heard him whisper after he was done.
"No."
"You wanna get outta here?"
"No. I love it here. Like a bloody day spa." He snorted and I swear to God I heard him shrug.
"C'mon yo." I hesitated. The way he was talking sounded like there was a 'but' attached. I didn't know what a guy like Kenny would want in exchange for helping me escape. Maybe a cow. According to him cows were 'Mad bomb'.
"Yeah."
"Cool, listen up."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
"You know what I like to do?" I barely suppressed a shudder. Kenny was trying to distract the guard. I was supposed to play along.
"What?"
"I like to yawn."
"Oh?"
"Yeah, makes me happy."
"Well, you know what I like to do?"
"What's that, John?"
"I like to sneeze."
"Oh, me too."
"Yeah, but you know what I hate? When you go 'ah, ah' and then nothing happens. That gets me upset." I'm pretty sure anyone who was listening in on this was thinking, "What the fuck is wrong with those two idiots?"
Kenny had told me why he was still here. Another big hero, looking out for the little guy. His best friend was here. They had been kidnapped at the same time. He had agreed to help me escape but only if I helped him free his friend.
"He's outta my range. If I try to spread out too much, my sheet tent will flop and they'll know what I'm doin'. Hell, I don't even know if he's alive, but I gotta try and find him, and if he is alive and I go out chargin' then they will kill him. Then I'll just feel stupid." I felt bad for him, now. I thought he was just stupid, and it turned out he was trying to save someone. When I told him why I was here, he shrugged and said, "That sucks. You'll get him someday," but he did look sympathetic.
He'd told me when they stapled the chip to his hand, it took a few seconds for it to activate and he managed to absorb half of it. He had half absorbed mine, too and promised me a lighter. I had no clue where the hell he would get one in here, but he seemed confident that he could find one.
"I think cheese tastes yellow. How bout you?" That was the signal. Not the cheese part. The "How bout you?" part. That meant the guard was at the far end of the hall.
Kenny pressed his hand against the door. My stomach twisted as it turned red and see through. Then it absorbed into his hand, which had also turned red. At the same time he disabled the camera; it fell to pieces on the floor. He went all red and stepped out into the hall.
"Hey! What are you- Oh my God! I need backup! Backup in block C!"
"Hold, up there, man." I don't know how he can talk when he does that. It freaks me out too. I stepped out behind him just as several doors ripped down the hall and boxed the guard into a corner.
"Shit, Kenny!" I shouted, as one nearly hit me. He walked down the hall, calmly unhinging doors, so they fell out onto the floor. I saw people curled up in their cells. They looked scared shitless.
"This way." He said, turning down the stairs Harry had taken me down to get to the white room. The people in the office began to scream the second they saw Kenny. No one tried to stop us; they all ran away like frightened mice. I looked into the cubicles. Someone had been playing The Sims, instead of working. Another had been reading the paper. The idiot Bush had proposed some other evil plan to take over the world, or something like that. Some college kids had beaten a classmate to death 'Under the suspicion that he was a mutant,' and there was a picture of his mother crying. That made me want to vomit.
"Humans are horrible." I muttered.
"Most of 'em." Kenny agreed.
"All of them."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
"Shoot! Shoot!" Someone screeched.
"You got a plan for this, mate?" I think he shrugged, but I'm not sure. Several bullets impacted on his Jell-O like body, causing him to warp around, and then he snapped back, like a rubber band. I wondered if he could feel that. I also began to wonder why he needed me. He seemed pretty unstoppable.
"I always got a plan." Office supplies melted together into tiny blobs, which could have been considered bullets. They flew through the air, out of my line of vision, and I heard several screams. Kenny shuddered, visibly. He didn't like to hurt people. The last of the rounds were fired before I heard the humans run away. He flopped down onto the floor. He was changing back, but he seemed to be fighting it. When he was solid again he stood, shakily.
"It's this way." he murmured.
"Hey, you okay?"
"Yeah, sure. Why not? C'mon." He stumbled but refused my help when I offered it. "I got it, man." He shrugged. So now I knew why he needed me; he couldn't hold his own for long. But I still didn't have my lighter, and I knew that the silence wouldn't last. We made our way along the myriad of hallways. I was lost after two turns, but he seemed to know where he was going. I heard footfalls.
"Kenny, I-" but then I felt something in my hand. It was a lighter. A Bic lighter, but still a lighter. It seemed he'd wasted the last of his strength with that trick. They rounded the corner and raised their Uzis. One screamed as I melted the gun in his hands. He didn't need all those fingers. I made the fire race along the walls, melting the infrastructure so the ceiling would collapse on their heads. More screams. I think Kenny said something, but I couldn't hear him over the laughing. I realized that was me. I'm certain I killed some people. I tried to tell myself afterwards, that they were just humans. That didn't work.
Finally, when the halls were blackened and smoking, I stopped. Kenny was looking at me strangely. I hoped it wasn't fear.
"John.. Let's go." He turned and walked away.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
"Which way?" Kenny was squinting at a fork in the hallway. It had been about ten minutes since our last encounter and I figured either it really was the last one or they were rallying the big guns. "C'mon, mate. The sooner we're outta here the better." He shook his head.
"I dunno. We'll have to split up." He started down the left hall.
"Wait. You can't go by yourself. You're out of it, they'll get you." He shrugged.
"If it happens, it happens. We gotta go." It seemed useless to try and stop him. Then I heard more footfalls. I froze, then I realized they were alone and too light to be a guard. A boy rounded the corner. He froze when he saw me then he spotted Kenny.
"Macleod?" he mumbled, and then he must have had a dizzy spell and fell on his ass.
"Damien! Dude, you alright?" He didn't respond, but he stood up with the aid of Kenny. This was his best friend? He looked like he was about twelve. Kenny was around eighteen. Strange.
The kid looked really out of it. His eyes were wide, and he looked extremely confused and frightened. Not that Kenny or I looked much better.
"We should get out of here." I said. Kenny looked at me like he didn't know what I was talking about. "You do have a plan for getting out of here. Don't you?"
"What'd I tell you before? I always got a plan." I had a bad feeling about how he said that. We got Damien to stand up and follow us, and made our way carefully through the halls. Now he didn't seem to know where he was going anymore. He seemed to be just guessing. It turned out I was right, when we came to a dead end.
"What the fuck now, Einstein?" He didn't respond. Instead he pressed his hands against the wall and made a hole big enough for us to climb through. There were trees. Lots and lots of trees. Great.
"What's wrong, Johnny? Don't like trees?" Kenny asked. He wasn't mocking me; it was like he was asking if I had bus money.
"Oh no. This is just my kind of party. Oh, look, poison ivy! Fun." He snorted and shrugged, then he helped Damien through the hole.
"We should run!" the boy shouted. I looked at him and saw his eyes. They were all black. "I see them comin'. We have to run."
"Demon? What's wrong with your eyes?"
"Demon?" I muttered.
"His nickname." The boy's eyes faded back to normal and he looked at me.
"Who..? We have to go. They have mutants comin' after us." I exchanged looks with Kenny.
"How do you know?"
"I can sense them! They have those chips in their hands to control them and they're comin' after us." He was beginning to panic.
"Well then we should go." Kenny said calmly, and then he began to climb into the forest. There was nothing to do but follow him.

YAY! They escaped! Kind of. Well, that's it for this chapter. Next chapter, stuff happens! WOO! Actually I don't know what happens, because Raven won't tell me. +sigh+ Oh well. For some reason only one person reviewed for chapter three. Maybe because stupid me forgot to ask you all to. Duh. So.. Review my friends!
angyl-devyl- That made me think. All of my relatives would like to thank you for that and I would like to thank you for making me feel better about my work. Thank you!
