Exchange of Words

The following is a letter penned by Albus Dumbldore on the eleventh of January 1971:

Andreas,

To begin with allow me to offer my congratulations upon your marriage. I am sure you can understand the reasons for my absence from the ceremony. May I also impart to you this: take care of her. Love her the way that I never could.

And Merlin help you should you ever break her heart.

Albus Dumbledore

The following is the reply to the above letter:

Dear Sir,

Your letter was much appreciated, although I cannot speak upon my wife's part; she is still upset at your non-attendance at the service. I am, however, convinced she will come into terms with your decision.

As for your none too subtle attempt at threatening me should I ever break her heart, fear not. I cannot Albus Dumbledore, because you hold the broken shards. While we both love Minerva, it is apparent that you will always be the keeper of her heart and I cannot help but envy you for it despite the fact that she has chosen me to be her life partner.

Whatever she may or may not have told you regarding our relationship our union was not established upon love, at least not upon her part. It never was, although I am sure that she does care for me to some degree. For myself, this is about companionship and the joys of a second chance at love after my beloved Katerina passed away. For Minerva, no matter how she will vehemently deny it, this union is a way of forgetting you and moving on with her life without you, seeing as how the great Albus Dumbledore suffers from the conviction that he cannot be with anyone for fear of reprisal from his numerous adversaries. In that sense should I be grateful to you for our marriage?

In light of this, I resolve not to be too resentful and take whatever affection from Minerva that is given to me. And I shall be thankful for it. Both life and love should not be spoiled with 'what ifs' but simply enjoyed because that is their point. After all I would not wish to make the same mistake as others have done and miss out on the happiness that is being offered.

Your servant,

Major Andreas K. Piraeus

AN: For those interested, a second chapter is being worked upon for my first fic, though I cannot say when it will be up. Just be patient, please!
