Summary: This will be confusing if you haven't seen the movie… You know that scene near the end where – right after Jim kills Mitchell – he stands in front of Selena, before moving towards her after that oh-so-seemingly long split second? Well, this takes place in that split second. Comments and constructive criticism welcomed.
Her dark brown eyes looked at his, but she could barely make out his face in the dark. Damn the dark! She could only take a quick glance. She wasn't sure if she'd have time for a longer look - what if he was infected?
She didn't want to risk it.
Tightening her grip on her blade, she thought about what'd she'd just seen him do to Mitchell - she'd seen the blood and the struggle and the horrible death that the soldier had just received - and she was sure that there was no way in Hell that he could be uninfected and have done that. How could someone do that under normal circumstances?
But these aren't normal circumstances, are they, 'Lena-dear? a voice mocked in her head.
She had her own life, still had a glimmer of hope past the infected men, their torturous plans, their barricaded building, the woods beyond, and the burning city beyond that.
Sure, it sounded like a lot to get through, but Selena knew she could find a way somehow... If only Jim weren't standing in her way.
Somewhere out there - beyond empty roads, empty fields, empty houses, miles of empty oceans - there was hope. And goddamnit, she was going to find it.
And maybe... He wasn't infected. What if she was about to do the wrong thing? -- No, she would be doing him a favour. Rather than him suffering through being infected - or killing her - she would kill him. And besides, if he survived, the soldiers would kill him, and probably a lot more savagely than she was about to.
But... If he weren't infected, he wouldn't look so terrified and unbelievably angry right now.
If only she could see his eyes... She wished she could. But it was too dark. Too fucking dark to see if the only man she'd ever consider loving was filled with the hate virus and about to kill her where she trembled.
But if he weren't infected, why would he be stepping towards her so threateningly? Sure he wasn't trying to test or scare her. No way would he risk his life like that, just to see if she'd go through with her threat - "I'd kill you in a heartbeat."
Suddenly, a thought struck her; if Jim was infected, he was going to die for sure, one way or another. And wouldn't she want to be with him?
As he moved towards her, she stopped shaking and let her grip slacken-
She decided to die with him.
