Prefect Duties
"Five years and I still can't figure it out, Re," she said, swinging his hand as they walked down the corridor on prefect patrol duty.
"Can't figure what out?"
"Why you hang out with them."
"They're my friends, Lillers. You know that."
"Yes, but why?"
"They're fun. They're nice. And above everything else, they're loyal. They trust me and I trust them. They know about my secret and they're still my friends. Don't look so shocked that I mentioned it. I'm not naïve enough to think you don't know about me too. How long have you known?"
"I knew about you by the middle of our first year," she admitted.
"And you've never said anything about it?" he asked, as his way of asking why.
"I figured that when you felt ready to tell me, if you ever did, you'd tell me yourself. If I knew someway to help you I would. But I couldn't do anything other than write down the assignments you missed."
"When you figured it out, you didn't stop being my friend. Why? Aren't you afraid of me?"
"Re, I wasn't raised with the same prejudices as a lot of people here. I don't think werewolves are crazy, subhuman creatures. I know that werewolves are people too. I know that some werewolves are smart, and funny, and cute." Was she flirting with him? Okay, maybe just a little. But they had a special friendship. They could do that sort of thing. After all, no one else but his mother could call him Re, and certainly no one could call her Lillers and get away with it. None even dared try.
"You're just saying that." He blushed faintly in the torchlight.
"No, I'm not. Re, any girl would be lucky to go with you." She meant this seriously; it was true.
"You?"
"What about me?" she asked in surprise.
He smiled a little sadly. "Never mind."
"Our patrol is just about over. Do you want to go to the kitchen and grab a snack?"
"Sure, Lillers."
Still swinging hands, Lily Evans and Remus Lupin walked down to the kitchen. Remus never bothered to tell James, Sirius, and Peter that Lily knew where the kitchen was and went down there at least once every two weeks or so. They all thought Lily was too much of a goody-good to ever break rules or go to the kitchen. Yes, Re and Lillers, quite the pair. They had a special relationship together. Of course, in public they were never Re and Lillers, they were always Remus and Lily or Lupin and Evans. Gryffindor Prefects, supposedly the best students Gryffindor had to offer. If only they all knew…
FIN
I know that last line sounded really guttery, but I swear it wasn't supposed to. I tried to make it platonic and I pretty much stayed there. See, I see them as being really close friends. Special friends. Just really close like a tell each other anything, kind of thing. I'm thinking of making it a series of snippets.
This might be the next one in the series (tell me what you think): I think it'd be funny if Remus was going out on his first date and Lily prepped him for it, and then he got really nervous and she had to teach him how to kiss or something. I dunno. That's just me. What do you think?
Please review. You know you want to. That button is just so tempting.
