Johnny looked out his boarded up window. He was curled up in a fetal position, trying to forget his memories.
I am not a child now
I can take care of myself
I mustn't let them down now
Mustn't let them see me cry
I'm fine
I'm fine…
The smallest memory leaked through his mental block. A woman. But not just any woman, this woman was oddly familiar. She had a wonderful smile upon her face. But then, the vision went blank. The light faded, and it was just Johnny, lying on the dirty, mud-caked floor.
Come back… Johnny knew who it was, and as he thought about it, a small tear fell down his cheek. It was his mother. His mother, long since dead, who haunted him with a promise of her return. But she never would. And he was left with this stupid reminder of how devoted she was to him.
He remembered just the way she looked on her deathbed. He remembered the exact tone of her voice as she said those immortal words.
I'll come back. I promise. You just have to hope for me. All it takes is a little faith, trust, and pixie dust.
Johnny shuddered.
I'm too tired to listen
I'm too old to believe
All these childish stories
There is no such thing as faith
And trust
And pixie dust…
He stood up. "It's been too long. I give up. I'm too old to get mixed up in this again."
Johnny dismissed the thought, abandoning everything he felt for the want of a gun…
"You know that won't solve your problems, Johnny…" Nailbunny offered his advice.
"Like what?"
"Like the fact that you can't accept that you still believe in those words. I know they've haunted you since her death, but can't you see that-"
"See WHAT?! I can't SEE her anymore, you stupid dead rodent! She's DEAD!"
Nailbunny took a deep breath. "Can't you realize that you still miss her like you used to?"
Right as usual, Nailbunny convinced Johnny to forget suicide.
"Well what am I supposed to do? I've tried…I try…" He began to sob.
I try
But it's so hard to believe
I try
But I can't see what you see
I try
I try
I try
My whole world is changing
I don't know where to turn
I can't leave you waiting
But I can't stay
and watch the city burn
Mmm, watch it burn
'Cause I try
But it's so hard to believe
I try
But I can't see what you see
I try
I try
"This whole place is changing. I can't stand it here any longer. I have to leave." Johnny stood up and began towards the door.
"That's right, Johnny. Abandon all hope of ever returning here and sleeping a dreamless sleep ever again," Meat grinned.
Johnny opened the door, and walked out into the cool night.
He walked a few steps and then looked up into the night sky. The stars seemed to outline a shape in the heavens, or maybe it was just Johnny's memories drawing the figure in the sky.
'Cause I try
But it's so hard to believe
I try
But I can't see what you see
I try
I try
Johnny sighed. It was the image. The sad, smiling face in the sky. He remembered, and tried to forget. Then, he accepted the truth.
"I understand now, mother. I realize now that you loved me too much to let me forget you, no matter how hard I tried."
I can finally see it
Now I have to believe
All those precious stories
All the world is made of faith
And trust
And pixie dust
So I'll try
'Cause I finally believe
I'll try
'Cause I can see what you see
I'll try
I'll try
I will try
I'll try
To fly
