Disclaimer: I do not own anything remotely close to Van Helsing. If I did I wouldn't let Hugh out of my sight. ( I might share him with my friend, Jess, though.) So don't sue.

Chapter 1

"Though I walk through the valley of shadow and death, I shall fear no
evil."

The creature smirked as this passage from the sacred book was read aloud. It would not help his prey. This creature was a vampire, a monster of legend. His prey was sitting in front of an alter at an abandoned church that served as the vampire's home.

"God won't help you now, little one. However, death might come quickly if you follow my directions," said the vampire eyeing his kneeling prey.

The prey, a human man in a long black coat and a black hat, still sat in front of the alter. What mystified the vampire was the fact that the man's heart was beating steadily even as he stood up and turned in one fluid movement to face the vampire. His face was shadowed by his hat, but he had long brown hair that reached his shoulders. In his hands was a silver and gold crossbow complete with a silver stake.

"And if I don't, what will you do?" The male said still keeping his face in shadow.

The Vampire looked stunned, and then his face turned to one of anger.

"How dare you mock me mortal! You will be killed because of it!" said the vampire as he lunged toward the man while morphing into his true form. But he stopped suddenly because the man was nowhere in sight.

"Behind you vampire," stated the cold, calculating voice of the man.

The vampire turned slowly and saw the face of the man that was to be his prey. The man's face was ruggedly handsome, but it had a sinister appeal to it. His eyes were a deep brown, but had a golden-yellow shine to them. When the man smiled the vampire saw longer canines like those of a dog. The vampire slowly backed up shaking in fear.

"W...who are you?" HE asked in a quivering voice.

"I am a murderer, a saint, the right hand of God, a werewolf.....I am Van Helsing." With that he pulled the trigger on the crossbow and shot the vampire in the heart with a silver stake.
