Subject: Challenge #2 at churchofuchiha LJ community

Notes: The challenge was to write a fic about leaving of some kind with the quote "You can only turn your back on me so many times, Itachi." somehow incorporated. This is what I came up with.

"You can only turn your back on me so many times, Itachi."

He has never said those words, but in his dreams he has.

In his dreams he says words that he has wanted to say since the first time that his brother poked him in the forhead and told him "tomorrow." The first time that Itachi turned from him and walked away from a promise. The first time that Itachi broke his heart and made Sasuke wonder if he would ever be good enough to garner his brother's attention. When he found the mutilated bodies of his clan strewn about at Itachi's feet.

Within his dreams, Sasuke is articulate.

Sasuke has said words that have saved his clan, saved himself, saved Itachi. Sasuke has said words that have kept Itachi with him, the one person that he has ever truly wanted to be there. There have been words that have made Itachi smile, SMILE, at him and laugh. In his dreasms, Sasuke has spoken of things that have kept Itachi from turning away from him.

If Sasuke were to say those words outside of his dreams he knows that it would only make his brother pause for a second, his back tense, and then continue walking away.

Sasuke has no hope of Itachi ever turning around again.
