Chapter 2: The First Sign of Danger

Legolas placed himself in front of Estel to protect the child. The rustling grew louder and Legolas readied himself for hand-to-hand combat, even if it meant getting hurt worse than his arm and back, which were bleeding and stinging.

"Legolas, what is that?" Estel asked from behind the elf prince.

"Show yourself!" Legolas yelled to the bushes and didn't answer Estel's question.

"We mean you no harm." The creature or creatures answered. Legolas picked out the word 'we.'

"If you mean us no harm, you would prove it and come out."

"Well, obviously, you have no manners. This is our home."

"This is Rivendell, home of the elves."

"So does that mean we're orcs?" Elladan, the oldest twin of Elrond, stepped out from the bushes.

"Elladan!" Legolas said, stepping forward.

"Don't forget about me." Elrohir, the other twin, said, coming out from his hiding place.

"Legolas," Elladan said, staring at Legolas's arm and bloody back, "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine. I think Estel's hurt worse." He indicated to the boy who's head wound had swollen and was still bleeding.

"Hm," Elrohir said, bending down to look at his foster brother who stared at him. "He'll live. But we should take you both to Father, just to be safe. Come on."

"While we're walking," Elladan said, picking his foster brother up to carry him, "Tell us how you ended up like this."

Estel was asleep. He had fallen asleep just about the moment his head hit the pillow in the Healing Room. It was probably all for the best since the healing herbs that were applied to his chest and head stung for the first ten minutes. Unfortunately, Legolas had been awake when they were rubbed onto his back. His back stung and he couldn't lie down, so he sat up.

His arm had also been set, and bandaged. Luckily, the herbs used for his arm didn't hurt as much. It was nighttime still and, after Legolas had put on his silky blue nightshirt and dark blue leggings, Elladan, Elrohir and Elrond wouldn't leave until Legolas had told them what happened.

Arwen also came in a little later (just pretend she had never gone to Lothló rien) and sat on the edge of Estel's bed, absentmindedly rubbing his bangs from his forehead as he slept, while she talked to Legolas.

"Really, Legolas, you should be lying down." She said, because Legolas had been pacing around the room in his nightshirt for the past half hour. "You're making me nervous."

"Sorry, Arwen." Legolas said, sitting at the end of his own bed and staring out of the window. "There have been so many warnings about an evil coming, then twelve wargs appear in Imladris."

"I know it's strange, but please, mellon-nin, rest."

"Very well," Legolas sighed, lying in his bed, his back still on fire and surprisingly fell asleep without so much as a 'goodnight' to Arwen, who sat staring at her brother and friend as they slept.

Legolas woke to Estel poking him. Once his eyes focused, he sat up and Estel handed him a bowl of herb stew that Arwen had made. Legolas sipped it silently while Estel nibbled on some Lembas.

At around six o'clock that day, Elladan and Elrohir came in, carrying Legolas's bow and quiver, white blades and Estel's sword.

"We thought you might want these back." Elrohir said, "Legolas, next time you decide to leave your knives in a carcass, make sure it's one where the blood washes off easily."

"I'll try." Legolas said, smiling as he propped his weapons up on his bedside table.

"Estel, Ada wanted us to give you this medicine." Elrohir continued and Elladan handed him a type of purple leaf. Estel crammed it into his mouth and swallowed quickly.

"Ew!" he said, taking the water jug on his bedside table and chugging the entire thing.

"If you don't mind my asking, Legolas," Elladan said, looking away from Estel, "Why did you leave your weapons behind? It's not like you to go anywhere without one. You won't even go to dinner without a dagger in your boot."

"I was too worried about Estel to think about anything else." Legolas answered.

"Oh. Well, Ada said dinner will be in the dining room tonight."

"Yeah. Don't forget your dagger, Legolas." Elrohir joked. Legolas smiled as the twins left, then he and Estel got dressed.

Estel wore a silky, light brown over shirt (like the one Legolas wears in the movie at the Council of Elrond) and Legolas wore one as well, only it was a forest green color. They both wore leggings and boots (Legolas slipped a dagger in his). Then they went to dinner.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dinner was as quiet as could possibly be. Elrond talked to the Captain of the Guard and Elladan, Elrohir, Estel, Arwen and Legolas talked about Estel needing to learn Elvish.
"I'll teach him." Legolas offered. "Estel, how much do you already know?"
"Nothing." Estel said, embarrassed.
"Yes, you know some." Arwen insisted. Then, she turned to Legolas and said, "He knows things like, Adar, Naneth, Hannen lle, Heruamin, Arwenamin, Heru en amin, Arwen en amin, Mae govannen… things like that." [Father, Mother, Thank you, My Lord (familiar), My Lady (familiar), My Lord (unfamiliar), My Lady (unfamiliar), Well met…]
"But I don't know that many sentences yet." Estel said.
"I'll teach you." Legolas repeated.
"Really?" Estel asked.
"Sure. Here, I'll teach you some now. What do you want to know?"
Estel put his hand to his chin and rubbed it as though he were thinking really hard.
"I'm half elf." He said finally.
"Amin naa elandili." Legolas answered.
"How about you, Legolas?"
"Amin naa quessir." [I am an Elf]
"How about… Gandalf!"
"Ro naa Istar." [He is a Wizard]
"Horse?"
"Rah."
"Dwarf!"
"Are you trying to remember these or are you making me think?"
"I'm making you think." Estel answered. Legolas shook his head, laughing. He was about to speak when something happened.
The door to the dining room swung open and an elf staggered in.
"My… Lords… Lady…." With that, he slumped to the ground and died. When he fell face forward, they all saw an arrow protruding from his back.
Legolas and Elrond both stood up and rushed to the body while the rest stayed seated out of shock. When the two kneeled down, Legolas pulled the arrow out of the dead elf's back.
"I have never seen this type of arrow before." he said, staring at the arrow's features.
Elrond turned the body over.
"Legolas," he said, "It's a Mirkwood Elf." The Healer was absolutely right. The elf had the Mirkwood hair, face features and clothing.
"What does that mean, Legolas?" Estel asked as he and the other three Rivendell elves rushed over. Legolas stared at the arrow, his eyebrows knitted together.
"It means," he said, "that Mirkwood is in danger."
