Chapter 4: The Secret

Three days later, Estel still rode unknown. He longed to talk to Legolas, to support the prince who was growing more and more restless.

Pretending to be and elf proved to be very hard. He had to keep his cloak up all day and rest apart from the others in case his cloak slipped off his face in his sleep. The elves started to call him 'Shy' since they supposed he was shy to the world.

Being and 'elf' he had to take all night watch shifts, since the elves were able to stay awake for days. And he could not rest on his horse because he had to be ready to answer all of Legolas's commands. He got frustrated because Legolas spoke in nothing but elvish. Estel knew how to say 'yes,' 'no,' and 'I don't know,' so he answered with those most of the time, earning himself confused glances.

He also had to speak with a smooth, elvish voice, not his own, childish voice and had to keep good composure when walking and riding. He hoped he wouldn't have to use the bow and arrow anytime soon or his identity would be given away.

Sometimes, he wished he could tell Legolas that he was himself so Legolas would say something he could understand. But Legolas would just send him back to Rivendell, angered at how Estel had betrayed his and his father's word.

Elladan and Elrohir had been riding for four days, but no sign of Legolas and his riders came to them. They followed is tracks and found Estel's footprints.

"Let's face it, El," Elrohir said, "We're never going to catch up with them. Legolas is driving them too fast."

"Ro, you would do the same if it was Rivendell that the Unknown was attacking. Legolas is just worried."

"I suppose."

"Why don't we go around the Misty Mountains?"

"Bad idea, El." Elrohir said.

"Fine. Then what should we do?"

"Keep riding."

"But we'll never catch up with them, Ro."

"But we have to tr-"

"Wait." Elladan cut him off, "Can you hear that?"

"What?"

"Listen." They both heard a loud thumping of lots of footprints, probably two days away. What worried them more was they could hear trolls as well.

"It sounds like they are close to Mirkwood."

"I hope Legolas is listening to this."

"Tampa!" Legolas shouted, "Ar'dina!" [Stop and be silent!]

Estel jerked out of his daze. He did not understand what Legolas had said, but the prince sounded worried.

"Shy," Legolas said, turning on his horse to stare at what he thought was an elf. Estel poised himself, getting ready to answer 'I don't know.'

"Heru en amin?" He answered, just wishing he could call his fiend Legolas instead of 'My Lord.'

"Tula sinome."

"Amin n'sinta." He answered. Legolas reached out and grabbed the bit of Estel's horse and lead her over to Mä ron.

"Lle quenea i'lambe tel 'Eldalie?" He asked.

"Amin n'sinta."

"You can't understand elvish, can you?"

"What makes you say that?"

"Because you answered 'I don't know' to 'Come here' and 'Can you speak elvish?'"

"Oh."

"What is your real name? I feel like I know you from some--"

BOOM!

Legolas's head jolted to the east.

"Trolls." He said, "We must ride!" He spoke all this in English.

"My Lord Legolas, we are too weary to fight. We haven't rested in two days!" An elf answered back.

"Very well." Legolas said with great effort, "We shall camp here. Estolada sinome!" [Camp here!]

Estel couldn't believe his eyes. The calm, cool and collected elf suddenly had fear in his eyes and he could tell that Legolas was shouting out orders, due to stress. He had never seen Legolas give commands before.

The elves dismounted and set up by, and in, the few trees around the place. Estel, however, moved away from the group and lay down on the hard ground.

After about five minutes, he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up into the worried face of Legolas.

"Shy," he whispered, "Are you alright?"

"Yes, My Lord, I'll be fine in the morning."

"Call me Legolas."

"Yes, Legolas. I'll be fine in the morning."

"We'll be arriving at Mirkwood in the morning."

"Thank you, Legolas."

In the morning, Legolas was shaken awake.

~"Sorry to wake you, My Lord, but we thought you might want to leave."~ An elf said.

"Yes," Legolas said, standing up from his spot under the tree. He had stayed up all night, worrying about Shy. There had been some moments when he believed the elf to be Estel, but then other times, it seemed ridiculous. Estel would never defy his and Elrond's orders to stay home.

There were times he wished the elf were Estel, and had asked Shy to call him Legolas, because he was lonely and wanted someone to talk to.

He also wanted to see Shy's face, to prove it wasn't Estel, so Legolas could sleep in peace.

~"Wait,"~ Legolas said to the elf that had woken him up. ~"I wish to speak to Shy. Bring him to me."~

"Yes, My Lord."

A few minutes later, Shy approached Legolas and bowed.

Estel wished he didn't have to bow, but could run into Legolas's outstretched arms like he did every time they greeted each other after a long separation.

"I wish to see your face." Legolas said. Estel was shocked. What should he do? He couldn't take off his hood and keep the secret safe. What would Legolas say?

"Please," Legolas continued calmly, "I must know something."

So that was it. Legolas was suspecting him of being himself and not Shy. He was tormenting Legolas, he knew it. His choices were now either making Legolas suffer from confusion or go home and Legolas would be mad at him. He never wanted to hurt Legolas. He just wanted to help.

Slowly, he lowered his hood, revealing his identity to his friend.
