One cannot own the wild, and I do not claim to possess it.
Sometimes all you can do is attempt to catch life. To grasp it before it slips from your fingers and crashes to the ground below.
I watched his face fall. As those final words that fell from his lips as he left out the door. I didn't need Toboe, and I didn't want him with me either.
I don't wish to damn another child. I will not repeat my mistakes of the past.
Besides I'd rather be alone. It's easier that way.
Without wolves or humans, all I need is my solitude.
Our feet pound on the pipes as we dash through the maze of the city. We become closer to our escape by the moment.
Humans lurk below and around us. They attempt to hunt the hunters.
What fools.
I never thought I would flee with these others. These outsiders. What a motley pack we make; a child, a fool, a feral being and I, a bandit.
The noises around increase as the humans are hot upon our trail. It fills my mouth with distaste to think I ever formed a pseudo-pack with those traitorous homosapiens.
Thank the moons that it was disbanded.
The child, Toboe follows closely behind me as we make our escape.
Then for one instant he slips. His voice cries out for me, "Tsume!!" I leap towards him, quickly grasping his shoulder securely in my fangs.
The boy below me recoils and slips from my hold. Red hair flowing as he plunges down into the darkness of the streets below. His eyes wide in terror of what I am.
The image burnt in my mind's eye haunts me for a second. Looking down onto Toboe's face I see neither fear nor apprehension. No, I see trust in his young eyes. That and calm that I will not let him fall.
In that instant I realize what the difference between humans and us are. I pull the child up and encourage him to keep running. The four of us continue, feet pounding on the unnatural pavement.
Standing at the city's edge I stare at the brilliant white snow and the others awaiting me upon it.
I know. I am a wolf.
With them I belong.
Never again shall I rest in that gods-forsaken city.
It was time for me to leave anyway.
Tell me what you think. After you read, review.
