Time

Pacifica watched the young stud prance around the field as she toyed absently with the wildflowers in her lap. The foal she'd helped bring into the world had grown so much in what seemed such a short time. She wondered if he missed his mother as she did her own. Leo had taken her with him once the foal had been weaned. Pacifica thought he should have had more consideration for the mother and child, and the bond he'd be rending. She'd said as much to Racquel, who answered her with a sad smile. He'll be back, she had said, don't worry.

She leaned back onto the hill with her arms stretched out beside her. Looking up at the sky always seemed to calm her as she recalled everything that had brought her to this state of freedom she now enjoyed. Her thoughts were interrupted by a familiar neigh, and she sat up abruptly as the young stallion raced up the hill. She turned and stood fluidly, the wildflowers scattering, forgotten, from her hands.

He'd cut his hair, though the strip of cloth she'd given him still embraced the crown of his head. His suit of armor was missing as well, replaced by a simple blue tunic that fit his form perfectly. He dismounted gracefully, patting the foal's neck as it nuzzled its mother.

The boy, who had once been so lanky and awkward, walked toward her now as a man, tall and broad and confident. When he was close enough so that she could see the twinkle in his eyes, he smiled at her. A warm, open smile that belied all the maturity etched into his features. She smiled back softly as the breeze played with her hair, almost nudging her forward toward him.

He stopped short a step away from her and she had to look up to meet his gaze. They traced each other's expressions carefully with their eyes, almost tangibly, before his name escaped her lips.

"Leo." That same plaintive tone tinted her voice as she spoke, as if two years hadn't passed in his absence. He answered back with that same serene smile.

"Pacifica." He took her small white hand in his large browned one. "Are you happy now?" She cocked her head to the side and looked up with a sly grin.

"Almost." His smile widened eagerly as he tightened his hand around hers.

"I'll ask you one more time." He dropped to his knee on the green hill speckled with wildflowers. "Please become my wife."

The wind paused its play expectantly, awaiting her answer.

And then...

He touched his cheek gingerly, where twice she'd struck him, first with her hand and now with her lips.

The End.
