The princess sat in her room, watching water droplets from last night's rain evaporate off her window. She was perplexed, the love of her life and reason for living had returned and she wished he hadn't. Link's actions last night had been very suspicious, it was almost like that wasn't him at all!
"Maybe he was just tired...." Zelda thought, looking for some justification.
She didn't go down to the dining hall until the pink sunrise had turned golden in the sky and she was sure breakfast had been served.
Zelda put on a simple blue gown to match her eyes and proceeded to breakfast. She found her father, Good King Harnikan already at the table.
"Good morning father."
"Good morning my sweetheart," The king attempted to sound cheerful for his daughter but the worry in his voice was not hidden. His eyes were sunken in and his usually plump, red face looked pale and a bit slack.
"Are you alright? Did Link speak to you? What has happened?" Zelda bombarded her father with questions, a bad habit of hers.
"I will be fine...about Link. He seemed to come in the night, a maid found him this morning in his chamber, and she nearly had a heart attack. How did you know he was here?"
"I spoke with him...he seemed urgent to see you."
"Well, I haven't spoken with him. He's still asleep I think. I'll have Impa check him over when he wakes."
"Thank you father....I don't know why he came back without telling us, I thought he was still in service." Zelda said then added. "The war isn't over is it father?"
"No Zelda, unfortunately, the war is still in effect," His face seemed to go even paler at talk of the war.
Zelda sighed and turned to her breakfast. It was a bit lacking for a palace meal due to the food and worker shortage. She ate in sustained silence, head full of troubling thoughts. When she finished, she excused herself and decided to visit Link.
Eager to see him, but equally worried, Zelda walked towards his chambers. Just outside his door, her thoughts were interrupted. She slipped in a puddle of water that had leaked from the ceiling and twisted her ankle.
"Stupid castle!" She cried.
~*~*~*
Link heard someone yell and mutter something from outside his door.
"Zelda..." He whispered.
He couldn't face her, he didn't even know why he came back. The sound of the doorknob turning, he had to get out. Link put his bow around his shoulder, grabbed the master sword and shield and disappeared out the window as the door opened and Zelda entered.
~*~*~*
"Link are you awa—Link!" Zelda saw him drop out the window. "Link! What are you doing?!?" She screamed and ran to the window. She saw him land safely on a lower level then drop to the ground below. She called his name again but he didn't acknowledge her at all.
Link stopped, turned to the north and whistled. Seconds later, a powerful red horse known as Epona answered the call with a neigh and thundered toward her master. The horse never slowed as Link grabbed a handful of mane and hoisted himself into the saddle. He pulled the reins and Epona shot off towards the Gerudo desert.
"...Link..." Zelda moaned and sunk down to the ground. She placed her palms over her eyes and cried. Surely this isn't happening! The man she loved was running from her.
"Link, I need you, come back...."
