Link was angry with himself as he thundered away from the castle. "What was I thinking?!" He yelled at himself, making Epona falter a step. "Sorry girl." He felt he had done the right thing in leaving and found it odd that he couldn't remember why he went back. 'That's not my life anymore,' he thought to reassure himself
Ever since the war started, Link had been different. When he witnessed his first battle, had a comrade die in his arms, he had become different. When he killed another man...he snapped. He had killed hoards of demons and monsters but a killing fellow human changed Link. With pain, he remembered back to that day.

It was about a month after Link was drafted into the war. Early in the morning, the sun had just risen when his general informed them of an approaching force. About 500 men, no problem. Link had almost been exited before his first battle, that feeling he used to get before entering a temple. But when the fighting commenced, it was different. Link saw the other men, the fear and pride in their faces, the same look on the faces of his comrades. Arrows and swords clashed during the battle, and a new invention, the rifle. It was a cylindrical weapon that shot a hot lead ball when the trigger was pulled. The lead ball entered the body and burned; it tore flesh and broke bones. Link never used one, he preferred his bow. As the battle continued, Link became a bit frightened, men were dieing. He had only used his sword so far, simply knocking men out. Then his best friend caught a head full of lead and collapsed to the ground beside him. Link tried to help his friend, but the bullet killed fast. Link looked up and saw his comrade's killer, holding a rifle and smirking slightly. "Got me one!" The killer yelled. Fury burst loose in Link's breast like some rabid, blood-thirsty beast. The sounds of the battle increased his rage. Link grabbed his bow, knocked an arrow and aimed at the man, hot tears and the blood of his friend stung his face. The other man hurried to reload his rifle, but was not fast enough. Link fired an arrow into the man's heart, then another into his face. He was now shaking with fear and rage....but the rage gave way after a second when Link realized what he had done. He had killed another man, a human with as much right and will to live as he did. Link panicked, he picked up his bow and ran away from the battle and into the forest.

Link slowed Epona to a walk as he neared the Gerudo camp. Two red haired women approached him, both had their faces covered by masks. The Gerudo woman on Links right removed her mask and smiled at Link. Her face was dark and mysterious, her deep-set eyes a dark blue. "Good morning, Lyatt," She said in a silky voice. Link grinned back at the woman. "Hello Saphra," he returned the greeting then dismounted Epona. He hugged the woman briefly before grabbing Epona's reins. "Let Randa get Epona, you come with me," Saphra took Link's hand and led him to the rivers edge.
"Where were you last night?" She asked, still holding his hand. Link dropped her hand and stared at the water. "Just...out." He answered. Saphra turned to him.
"You're lying to me, Lyatt" She could always tell. Link took his gaze off of the river and was about to come up with a better fib when they were interrupted. A Gerudo man (Not Ganon, there are more Gerudo men in this fic.) rode up to them on a dark black stallion.
"Saphra, the leader wants to speak to you," he informed.
"Again?! What does she want this time?" Saphra climbed on the back of the messenger's horse and he led her through the camp towards the leader's residence. "You had better come up with a better explanation when I come back!" She warned Link before they were out of hearing range.
Link was lucky to be able to live with the Gerudos. Though they were a bit pushy at times, he knew they wouldn't turn him in for deserting.
Ok, ending it here for now. Sorry it's short but blah ok, just blah. So, you're probably more confused (why does Saphra call Link Lyatt? And why does Link think he can't go back to the castle?) Don't worry, you'll understand as soon as I do ^_~! L8r, I'll write more of what Link has been up to the past year and what "possessed" him to return to the castle finally but not stay.
