Link awoke just before the sun rose, feeling terribly lethargic and sore. He climbed out of bed, grabbed the bags he had packed and stepped out into the daybreak. After attaching the bags to Epona's back, he started over to Saphra's. Running away...well it wasn't the first time. He didn't know where they would go, but at least they would be together and happy. Still, he couldn't help feeling sorry for Randa, although she had seemed ok with it all.
Saphra's huge black stallion greeted him as he approached. Link patted the beast on the muzzle then placed his hand on the thin wooden door. He was about to push it open when an ear-splitting scream pierced the tranquil desert air. It came from the leader's headquarters. He temporarily abandoned his plans and sprinted towards Ferrah's palace when an equally gruesome screech from inside Randa and Saphra's abode made him turn around. Gerudo men and women were appearing in their doorways and windows, questioning what the racket was about. Link quickly ducked in the low doorway of the girl's house and allowed his eyes to focus in the darker room.
Someone, Randa was standing in the middle of the living room, trembling with fear. She saw Link and ran bawling to him.
"Link! Oh god, help! Saphra!...she's..." Suddenly, the usually unwavering girl fainted in Links arms and lay twitching slightly on the ground. He set her down and noticed she had fresh blood on her hands and nightgown.
He quickly ran into the adjoining bedroom that belonged to Saphra. What he saw made him retch and he had to turn away. Leaning against the doorframe Link recovered his mind and hesitantly looked back into the dark room. Blood, so much blood. He had never seen so much. It was smeared on the walls, across the furniture, and was dripping off of the bed into vile rivers of crimson on the hard-packed dirt floor. On the bed, hardly recognizable and bleeding freely from the innumerable lacerations on her nude body, was Saphra. Link cried out in absolute horror. He ran to her but it was unnecessary to check for life. Her neck was slit open to the vertebrae and her eyes stared blankly. Her once beautiful face was mutilated beyond recognition, her lips severed and her nostrils slit open. Shuddering uncontrollably, Link raised his hand to her bloody face and closed her dead, screaming eyes.
He staggered out of the room and collapsed beside the door, crying hysterically and convulsing in terror. He leaned over and vomited before attempting to stand on weak legs. He made his way over to Randa and woke her by touching his cold bloody fingers to her cheek. She shot her eyes open and frantically clung to him for dear life.
"Link! Is it true? Did I see....?" She couldn't continue once she saw the blood on his hands as well as hers. Her sister was dead, his love was dead, Saphra was dead. Link pulled the girl into a sitting position and asked her if she saw who did this.
"I didn't see...I was asleep. I got up a few minutes ago to see if she had gone yet. And....found...her." Randa's voice cracked at the last word and she regressed into sobs. Shouts could be heard outside. "Murder! Murder!" They screamed. Link made sure Randa was stable and ran out to the street. He stopped a guard in the street and begged her to help.
"Call everyone, Saphra has been murdered! Help!" She shook her head at him and sprinted on towards the leaders. "Stop!" He screamed and grabbed the woman's arm. "Saphra has been murdered!"
"You think it's funny? Saying something like that in a time of panic? You stupid kids piss me off. Now let me go!" The guard was older than Link and obviously thought he was joking.
"Please, im serious, help me!" The guard finally let him lead her back to the house. Within minutes, they had a crowd of people in the home, gasping at the ghastly scene and questioning. Never had they seen anything so gruesome, accept across the camp at the leader's headquarters. Ferrah had been murdered in the exact same manner. A guard had found her a second before Randa had found Saphra They had a serial killer on their hands.
By the time the sun had risen every Gerudo was terrified, jumping at every sound, suspecting everyone, trusting no one. Link sat up against the wall outside the murder scene, still shaken. Randa sat next to him, shivering and clinging to his chest. Link's mind was blank yet racing. He was still trying to figure out what had happened, and who could have done this. But it didn't take the Gerudo people long to find a suspect.
"He did it!" Said one man, pointing at Link
"Yes, he's a Hylean!" Said another
"The enemy!" A woman cried dramatically
"He just found out he was being banished last night, there's your motive," noted one of Ferrah's guards. Link rose indignantly.
"I did no such thing! Why in hell would I kill Saphra? I love her! And I have no resent for the leader! I have nothing but respect for her! It wasn't me!" He shouted to them all, furious at the accusation.
"See how violent he is?"
"What is wrong with you people?! Its Lyatt were talking about! Have you forgotten all he's done for us?" Randa yelled to the crowd. She stood in front of him. "My sister is dead, our leader is dead. The two people he held in highest regard. I know he didn't do it, be reasonable!" Murmurs followed this statement, still the guard that spoke earlier said,
"He was supposed to be gone already, why are you still here, Hylean." She sneered at him as if it were something unclean to be Hylean. Link looked in utter disbelief at the people. The people he had come to trust were accusing him of such a heinous crime. He was outraged at how impressionable a crowd of panicked people could be. He turned and forced his way through the sea of angry faces, Randa holding onto his arm.
"Where...Where are you going?!" She breathed. He wrenched his arm from her grasp and turned to her, meeting her concerned eyes.
"I'm sorry Randa, but I have to go. These people will kill me if I stay." Randa made as if she was going with him "No, No. You can't go with me, im sorry. Stay here, its best."
"Stop," She began, "If you just tell them what your real name is, that you're the Hero of Time, they'll drop their accusations and find the real killer! Don't leave Link!"
"No Randa," He said as he mounted Epona. The crowd was making its way over to them now, growing more critical by the minute, shouting things like 'hang the Hylean traitor!' and 'Murderer!'
Randa stood in front of Epona and put her hands on the beast's powerful chest as he attempted to leave. With angry tears appearing she yelled, "Dammit Link, do it for Saphra, please!" He paused and looked painfully into her eyes, they were so full of betrayed feelings, hurt, and confusion, like Zelda's had been last time he saw her. He gave Epona a swift kick and she maneuvered around Randa, across the arid sand into the sunrise, the voices all calling after him.
Dude, I wasn't expecting that, how about you? A double murder? Woo! If you wanna know who did it, you have to review, that's all. Do it now. I'm serious. Right now! Ok, fine, if you don't ever wanna know who did it, then just don't review. No difference to me.
