Chapter 1/ Prologue: A new beginning.
It was just like a new beginning. Killing Dracula did nothing to cleanse Gabriel. It did nothing to soothe his constantly cluttered mind since Anna's death. But here he was. Confessing to the monk.
Actually, it wasn't a real confession. It was his new mission, so to speak.
"His name is William Van Quish, also known as the Phantom." The monk spoke of this as if it was an everyday topic to discuss. Actually, it was an everyday topic, but it was not up for discussion.
Gabriel Van Helsing had been chosen by God to protect all of humanity. It wasn't that he didn't care. It was just that he didn't really have the gut needed to do this job right now. And the blank fuzzy feeling of his own life before he realized who Gabriel truly was really pushed his nerves.
"The Phantom?" Gabriel asked.
"Yes. He is a ghost. Well, at least that is what fits the profile. He doesn't seem to want to leave limbo." The monk said seriously. He flipped the latch that opened the door to the underworld of the church.
"Limbo?"
"Yes, Gabriel. The place where one goes after one dies. It is the place between hell and heaven and earth."
"I know what limbo is, Cardinal." He followed the monk through the hallways. Van Helsing could hear the loud clatter of machinery down below.
"Of course you do." Cardinal walked on.
"So where is this Phantom?" Van Helsing asked, ignoring the Cardinal's annoying tone of voice.
"Greece. The southern part to be more specific. In the port of Montenegro."
"He also hangs around Liika. A nearby village." Carl butted in.
"Been studying have you, my young friar?" The cardinal asked, pleased.
"Just want to make sure he's prepared and all." Carl gave a pat on Gabriel's back. Van Helsing gave him an odd glare. Carl shifted his hand like it wasn't really meant to be there.
"Yes, all in good time. Speaking of prepared, You two will be prepared to leave tonight."
"Yes and I have… TWO?" Carl shouted. "Two of us?" He returned to the meek state.
"Yes. The monks have disagreed with me and believe you did an outstanding job with Dracula, and protecting Anna."
Anna. Van Helsing choked at the name. He thought about her everyday. Carl looked nervously at his friend. He knew how her death had changed Gabriel.
"But… But… But…"
"No buts about it Carl. Now, we haven't detected a weakness for the Phantom."
"The Phantom?" Carl squeaked in an abnormal voice.
"A ghost who hasn't gone on with death and enjoys killing." The monk batted Carl's fears away from his own mind. The Friar's little fears were not of importance.
"Why don't they name themselves pink bunny rabbits or rubber goose? And why don't they just throw wildflowers at people? Why the Phantom?"
"Well, we think the weakness is fear."
"Fear?" Van Helsing asked.
"Fear."
"Fear?" Carl repeated.
"Fear!" Cardinal grew impatient.
"Fear of what?"
"We're not sure."
"So we're just diving into this?" Van Helsing asked. It's how it was usually done. Ask unknown questions, kill the enemy, then find out answers.
"Well then, what's keeping him here?" Carl asked. A question Gabriel didn't even think about asking.
"The love of a good kill."
