Words Not Needed

by Bluefish

He sat on his favorite rock at Genkai's garden, thinking of everything and nothing; fallen comrades, new friends, and old flames. All jumbled thoughts swirled around, creating a mirage of fragmented memories and fleeting moments. Silence did not become him, but at this moment it seemed much appropriate. By inherent grace, it's natural for him to be meditative and still, yet vibrant at the same time.

Above, Hiei watched him contentedly.

His eyes closed, the sitting figure took a deep breathe of fresh air. The trees sang, rustling their leaves, as the one with power to control the plants released his excess ki. The branch of the koorime's favorite tree leapt with joy as it absorbed the energy, throwing the ever-alert fire demon off.

With an effortless move, Hiei landed on his partner's side. He slouched a bit and relaxed his shoulders. Gone were his calculated, efficient, and precise motions when he was with this person beside him. It didn't feel right to be on his guard when they were alone. Next to Kurama, he was safe.

The kitsune opened his eyes and glanced sideways. A little smile formed, welcoming, although joy had etched itself deeper on his heart.

"Hn," came the reply of acknowledgment.

The red-head didn't try to start a conversation since he knew that the shorter demon wasn't looking for one. Nobody spoke for a long time. They enjoyed this comfortable silence.

The presence alone was enough.

Kurama shifted his position to allow room for Hiei to sit. Staring at the new space, the koorime hesitated for a second before accepting the offer. The rock felt warm under his cloak, and when their arms touched, he shivered. Somehow knowing that he shared this person's warmth enveloped him with unfamiliar feelings.

He made no move to remove himself from Kurama's side.

Time passed, and still nobody uttered a word. Only slow, rhythmic breathing of two beings was heard.

The fox demon felt a light pressure on his arm, and looked down to find a leaning fire demon.

Hiei was asleep.

Kurama gently brushed a strand of hair off the fire demon's forehead. Not wanting Hiei to wake up, he tried not to move much.

His body knew instinctively what he needed; it supported both of them while his thoughts wandered again.

The light breeze touched his cheeks, and he felt his eyelid heavy.

Someday he would look back and remember this moment.

Kurama smiled.

If some memories were created, falsified and forgotten, others stayed forever, unchanged. These little instances he had with Hiei were the latter ones.

They stayed because he didn't keep them in his mind. They were forever because he had them in his heart.

These feelings.

Words were simply not needed.
