Sam: What we had - it was good. It was what we both needed at the time.
Jack: Yeah, I guess it was.
Sam: In another life maybe.
Jack: Yeah maybe.
Sam: I really hope you and Marie will be happy in Chicago.
Jack: I am sorry if I ever hurt you.
Sam: Me too.
Jack: I better keep doing this, since I'm gonna lose my nerve.

Martin had been on his way to Jack's office before going home for the day.. Even though the two men had had their differences at times, he still held a lot of respect for Jack. He had learned a lot in these last couple years and wanted to make sure his supervisor knew that.

But he was stopped by the sound of voices inside. Jack and Samantha. He paused, thinking they were just saying their good-byes and should have moment of privacy. Then he heard what they were saying. He froze in place, straining to catch every word. This felt so wrong, yet he couldn't stop himself. He had to know if there was still something between them.

He inched a little closer towards the office door. He wanted to see them, but risked being spotted through the glass. No, both had their backs to the door. They were no longer talking, just quietly pulling books from shelves. A few times, they looked at each other, but he couldn't quite see their faces. He wanted to, but also dreaded what he might see there.

Martin turned and retreated down the hall. He sank into his chair, glad that Danny and Vivian had already left.

"I guess love is blind. And deaf. And very, very dumb" Ironic that he had said those words to Jack of all people. He shook his head at himself. Blind, deaf, and very dumb described Martin Fitzgerald all right!

He thought back to last year, when Sam had been taken hostage. "...doubt whether or not you have proper

objectivity - particularly because it's ... this agent, Jack." He had heard Van Doren say those words, but not wanted to believe what they implied. After all, he had come across Van Doren and Jack in the middle of the conversation. He had to have misunderstood.

She was dating that cop Kellar back then, anyway. She couldn't possibly be interested in someone so much older. And Jack was married, for god's sake. Sure, he had been separated at the time, but they all knew he and Maria were trying to work things out. He had moved back home around that time, too.

But today, coming across Sam crying, he couldn't keep denying it. All those little clues that he had not let himself notice. The looks, the way they seemed to "accidentally" brush up each other more than necessary. "Was I the only one who didn't know?," he had asked, but he knew it wasn't the real question. He had known, but as long as no one it out loud, he could pretend it wasn't there. Maybe he even hoped she would lie and let him continue lying to himself.

Sam: It was over two years ago, Martin. It was before you got here.
Martin: I guess old feelings die hard.
Sam: They don't die. They just...fade. Then you feel bad that they faded because you wonder ... you wonder what they meant when you had them.
Martin: Well, I guess if they didn't fade, then there wouldn't be room for new ones.
Sam: No, I guess there wouldn't.
