A/N -- Watching Return of the King for the 10th time in the theaters made me think of what the thoughts of Merry and Pippin may be as they parted each other at Edoras. Track 2 Hope and Memory further encouraged me to write about it in a drabble- 100 words exactly =)

Deceptive Uncertainty

Amidst the worry and fear of watching Pippin depart with Gandalf to Minas Tirith, Merry could only maintain a fearless facade, encouraging the perception to Pippin that he felt that this was for the best. But Pippin's tearful cries of "Merry" echoed in his mind and all emotions surfaced.

He ran up the wooden stairs, watching Shadowfax bear away his beloved cousin to a far, unknown place. Aragorn placed his hand comfortingly upon Merry's shoulder, but this did not prevent salty tears to freely flow down Merry's eyes as the white horse vanished into the vastness of the Rohan plains.

Feelings of Guilt

"I don't know, I don't know what's going to happen." Merry, RotK

Before I knew it, we had left the city of Edoras and the great Hall of Meduseld had become only a spot in the distance. The wind buffeted against my face as Merry's words lingered in my mind. Finally realizing the magnitude of what I had done, I was overcome with regret.

Would I ever see Merry ever again? Tears stung my eyes but I dared not sob out loud.

However, Gandalf sensed my despair and whispered comfortingly to me, "Silly Took, you are forgiven. But do not be sorrowful-- my heart tells me that you will see Merry again.
