The next day at school, Jenni didn't talk to Kurama. Once again, Kurama left a note on her table. Jenni opened it and read "Meet me at my house after school today." She didn't need to ask who it was from. She knew who it was from. She looked at Suiichi and nodded, once again barely visible.
~ Lunch...~
Jenni climbed her usual tree, but chose a branch higher up this time. One almost couldn't see her among the blossoms.
Hiei flickered onto the branch above her and watched her work on a drawing. He had been feeling a strange attraction to her for a while, ever since she told her story. They seemed to have a lot in common.
Today, Jenni had a picture with a black fox kit and the same fire demon as before. The fire demon, that looked extraordinarily like Hiei, was bending over the fox, who had a cut on her chest and a broken leg. The fire demon had his hand on the kit's brow and was smiling softly.
Hiei was appalled. Two pictures in a row. What was with this girl?? She didn't know him...did she? Hiei would have to ask Kurama about it later.
Jenni continued working on her picture all through lunch. She didn't eat. She just sat there and worked in the picture. She finished it and took out a photo. It had an old man in it. He was banding over o rose, watering.
"Grandpa." Jenni sobbed quietly. A cold breeze came and Jenni shivered slightly. She felt something slip around her shoulders and looked up. Hiei stood there, not looking at her. "Hiei, why...?"
"You were cold," he said simply. "I'll be fine. Keep it for a while." Jenni nodded and smiled. She stood up as well.
"Thank you," Jenni whispered, giving Hiei a small hug. Hiei returned it and Jenni found that it was very warm in his arms. She felt...safe.
Jenni tried to pull away , but felt Hiei's arms around her tighten. "Hiei, what--?"
Hiei cut her off by giving her a quick kiss. The bell rang a few moments later and Hiei broke away. He flickered off and Jenni smiled broadly. She climbed down the tree and raced to gym class.
~ After school...~
Jenni was walking along when she felt like someone was watching her. She turned around and caught a flash of black. She smiled. "I know you're there, Hiei," Jenni said.
Hiei appeared next to her. "How did you know it was me?"
"Well, I saw a flicker of black, just like when you left in such a hurry after lunch." Jenni grinned. "You going to Suiichi's house, too?"
Hiei nodded. They walked in silence the rest of the way. They got to Kurama's house and Yusuke answered the door.
"Hey, Hiei, Jenni. Come on in." He opened the door wider and both walked in.
"Hello! Well, now the only person that isn't here is Koenma," Suiichi said. "By the way, Jenni, call me Kurama."
"Alright Kurama. But who's Koenma?" Jenni asked, rather interested.
"You'll see soon enough." Kurama smiled and walked into the living room. Jenni noticed an array of roses in a vase on the table. She also noticed a baby.
"Hello, Jenni," the baby said.
Jenni's first reaction was to hide behind Hiei and squeak, "It TALKS!!!"
Yusuke and Kuwabara fell over laughing. Kurama tried, and failed miserably, to hide his smile and try not to laugh. Hiei snorted and moved so that he was behind Jenni. The baby looked rather annoyed.
"I am King Enma Jr., or Koenma, ruler of the Spirit World," the baby said. Jenni nodded for him to continue. "I have some news for you. You might want to sit down."
Jenni sat down, with Hiei right next to her. "Alright. Now, what the hell are you talking about?"
Koenma sighed. "You are a reincarnated black kitsune, and the key to a kingdom that holds a jewel that will increase any demons power. You are being hunted by demons and need one of the Reikai Tantei to protect you at all times. Kurama will be with you in school, and Hiei at all other times. Any questions?" Koenma asked.
"Yeah. Am I allowed to faint?" Jenni passed out and Hiei caught her. He went to Kurama's room and set her on the bed,
"Well, that went better than expected," Koenma said. "We thought she would have another breakdown or something like that because of all the emotions. I feel sorry for the poor girl."
"Why'd I have to get the job of protecting her, except when she's in school?" Hiei asked, sounding rather annoyed.
"Because you're best suited to do that. Well, have a good weekend!" Koenma said as he popped back to his office.
Hiei growled slightly. He flitted back up to Kurama's room, where Jenni was, picked her up, opened the window, and jumped outside. He went all the way back to Jenni's room and put her on the bed.
He heard someone coming, so he hid to watch. A man stepped into the room, obviously drunk. He walked over to Jenni and shook her awake.
"Hello, father. Is there something I can get you?" Jenni asked, still looking rather shocked.
"Yeah. You can get out of my house, you imposter!" The man yelled, his voice slurred. When Jenni didn't move, the man took out a knife and brandished it at her.
Jenni squeaked and moved, but not fast enough. The man cut Jenni's arm father badly. She held her arm, blood seeping through her fingers. She was cut several more times before Hiei decided to take the risk and jumped in front of her. He hit the man in the back of the head with the hilt of his katana. The man keeled over, unconscious. "We have to go. You're not safe here anymore," Hiei said, turning to Jenni. She nodded and gathered up some clothes and other stuff, stuffing it all in her other backpack. Then she whistled and a cat came running to her feet and sat down.
"Come on, Tas. In the bag," Jenni said. The cat hopped into the bag obediently and lay down in a ball, purring. Jenni smiled. "Alright, I just need some things." Jenni walked over to her closet and opened it. There were knives, daggers, throwing knives, and swords. Jenni picked up three swords and several daggers and knives, stuffing two swords onto her belt, the other in her bag, and put all the daggers in a side pocket. "Now I'm ready."
Hiei nodded and picked up the backpack, jumping out the window. Jenni jumped after him, raking her school bag with her.
She took her backpack back from him and they walked in silence. Finally, they arrived at a BIG staircase. Jenni's shoulders drooped.
"Do we have to climb all of those" Jenni asked, already sounding tired. Hiei nodded and Jenni groaned.
~40 minutes later...~
They had FINALLY gotten to the top and Jenni saw, what looked like, a dojo. Hiei walked in and motioned for Jenni to follow. Jenni, however, shook her head and sat down. Her breath was shallow and Hiei heard the steady drip of her blood.
Tas's head poked put through the little opening Jenni had for him. He growled a little as he saw the state Jenni was in. He glared at Hiei as if to say 'You-allowed-my-mom-to-get-in-this-condition-and-you-are-going-to- PAY!!!'
Hiei glared right back at him until Jenni slumped forward. Tas managed to jump out of her backpack and started to lick and nuzzle Jenni's face, meowing. Hiei walked over and picker her up.
"Hello, Hiei. Oh! What happened to the girl? She looks awful!" Yukina walked over and motioned for him to follow her.
Hiei set her down on a bed and Yukina healed her. "What happened?" she asked again.
"I'll tell you later. This is Jenni, and I'm supposed to stay with her at all times. Orders from Koenma. Can you get the others over here in five minutes?" Hiei asked, not looking at her.
"Of course," Yukina said as she hurried off. Hiei sighed and sat down next to Jenni. Her face was peaceful, yet a single tear ran down it.
Five minutes later, all of the Reikai Tantei were gathered in the
living room. Jenni had
been shaken awake by Hiei so that she could attend.
"So, why did you tell Yukina to get us, Hiei? She said something about
Jenni, but nothing
really specific," Yusuke asked as he watched Jenni fidget nervously in
her seat.
"Well....Jenni was attacked by her father. He was drunk and didn't
recognize her. So, he
attacked her with a knife and injured her." Hiei glanced at Jenni. "I
decided that she
should stay here and train with Genkai....If she doesn't kill Jenni,
that is. She is,
apparently, already skilled with a sword and knives, as her closet was
full of them, but I
have yet to test her."
"Her FATHER attacked her?! Even if he was drunk, he shouldn't have
attacked her!"
Kurama said angrily.
Jenni looked away. "I didn't tell you, did I? Well, that happens about
once a week. It
doesn't matter if I have school the next day or not. He'll always go
out and get drunk.
Then, he'll come home, think I'm an imposter, and he hurts me. He
usually lasts about 15, 20 minutes before he passes out. I've never fought back, just dodged." Jenni smiled sadly. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to bed." Jenni stood up, as did Hiei, and they both walked out of the room.
Hiei waited outside while Jenni changed, then came in and settled down in a corner, katana propped against his shoulder.
Jenni couldn't sleep. "Hiei?"
"Hn?"
"I can't sleep. Got any suggestions?"
There was silence for a few moments. Then, Hiei lay down next to Jenni. "Think you can sleep now?" Jenni nodded and snuggled closer to the warmth that was Hiei. She was asleep within seconds.
