Hiei: Aren't you going to apologize?
Me: No! Why would I do that?!
Kurama: Because you didn't update over the weekend like you normally would.
Me: Well, I was...uhm...how do I say this...?
Hiei: Just tell them already, goddmnit!
Me: Okay, I wasatDisneylandfortwodayswiththeConcertBandfrommylocalhighschoolovertheweeke ndandihadnocomputeroranythinglikethat. There, I said it. Happy, Hiei?
Hiei: Yep! :)
Me: Just how much sweet snow did you have, Hiei?
Hiei: Only 3 boxes.
Me: Uh-oh......DUCK FOR COVER!!
(Chapter 9: Saying good-bye)
Hiei ran through the forest near Genkai's temple, going as fast as he could. He hadn't realized how much he would miss Jenni when she was gone because he never thought that she would leave. Now, he regretted letting her have the battle all to herself.
'There's nothing you could have done, Hiei,' a small voice said to him. 'She was determined to have that battle to herself and there was nothing you could have done to prevent it from happening.'
'Oh, you have no idea how wrong you are,' Hiei thought back to it. 'You have no idea....'
'Well, if you really want to know what's happening inside Jenni's head, then open your eye and check,' the nagging voice said, and it seemed as if it were smirking.
Hiei opened his Jagan eye and looked into Jenni's head, only to find a void. There was nothing there, only... black. Pitch black that told Hiei that Jenni would not be waking up any time soon.
'Sht,' Hiei cursed to himself. 'Why do I get the feeling that this isn't good...?'
(Inside Jenni/Kurai's head)
Jenni watched in turmoil as her friends were killed. It started with Kim and Neko, killing them slowly and painfully. It allowed her to hear her friends' anguished sobs and calls and pleas for help.
Then, it went to Yusuke, Kurama, Kuwabara, Yukina, Botan, everyone else, except Hiei. In fact, Yusuke's dying words were, "Take care of yourself, kid. And don't get killed. Hear me? I'll see ya around, Kit."
If ever there had been a time when Yusuke had felt like an older brother, that was definitely one of them. As she watched, everyone Jenni had grown to know and love, care for, or make friends with was killed right in front of her eyes. She started to cry bitterly, not caring if anyone saw or not.
She felt a pair of arms go around her shoulders and looked up to see Kurai's glowing golden eyes looking down at her sympathetically. Kurai smiled slightly, then looked over her shoulder.
They both watched as an illusion of Hiei was walking past them, ignoring them and heading for another girl that looked exactly like Neko, only with black cat ears and not in the school uniform.
Jenni cried harder and felt Kurai's arms tighten like a mother's embrace for a child.
"Shh... It's alright, Hikari. Don't let the illusions get to you. Show no weakness to the enemy," Kurai whispered into Jenni's ear. Jenni's crying calmed and she looked up at her other half.
"Thank you, Kurai. I don't know where I'd be without you, but I think I'd be dead," Jenni said with a small smile of her own and a chuckle.
"Actually, you probably would have let out a giant explosion of energy at the last moment and saved yourself, but fallen into a coma immediately instead of having time to ask questions," Kurai said with a small chuckle. "That would have been quite a show to watch."
"I see," Jenni said. "So we pretty much have the same powers, only you can control your better than I can, right?" Jenni smiled as she watched the tail swish back and forth... back and forth.... back and forth....
"Basically," Kurai said. "And I have more control over another element, but I don't think that that will matter soon if you do not wake up."
Jenni's eyes became dull and lifeless. "What reason do I have to live, Kurai? Tell me that and I will consider going back. If you have no answer, then I can remain here forever."
"Hiei needs you," Kurai said so softly that Jenni had a hard time hearing what she said. "And if you don't go back, then I will take over the body and make you go back."
"Hiei..." Jenni said, looking into her mind. She saw confusion, hurt, guilt. "I'll go, but you have to promise me that you will never leave me, alright?" Jenni said, turning to Kurai.
"Of course I won't leave, Hikari. Why would I do that?" Kurai asked softly, looking down at her lighter side.
Jenni shrugged. "I dunno.....Maybe 'cause you don't like me," Jenni said, looking away and letting a lone tear fall down her face. Kurai brushed it away tenderly and bent down so that she could whisper into Jenni's ear. She whispered, "Wake up now!" and disappeared.
(Outside Jenni/Kurai's head)
Hiei sat next to Jenni, watching as he had been for the past week. Suddenly, he saw her crack open one eye and look around the room a little bit before opening her other eye.
Jenni sat up, rubbing her eyes and blinking, not used to the bright light. Then she spotted Hiei. "Hey, Hiei. What'd I miss?" Jenni asked, yawning slightly.
Hiei launched himself across the bed and latched onto Jenni, kissing her so hard that they both fell over backwards.
Jenni giggled when they came apart. "I'm taking that as a "I-missed-you-but- I'll-never-admit-that-in-a-million-years," Hiei," Jenni said, still giggling.
At that moment, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, Yukina, Botan, Koenma, Genkai, and all the others burst into the room and looked at Jenni.
"You're awake!" Botan squealed, latching onto Jenni's arm and smiling at her. "Hey, everyone, let's have a party!!!" Botan suggested. Everyone agreed and they all were going to meet back at the temple in 3 hours.
Jenni walked around a little bit and realized something: she was depressed over her parents' deaths and she'd always be depressed if she never got over it. She walked over to a little cemetary-like place that they had buried "Andrew" and her father in.
"I guess this is good-bye, Dad. I'll miss you and I don't think I ever thought about what life would be like without you. I-I... Well, I'll miss you a lot and I want you to not fret about me or anything. You, too, Andrew. If only you weren't a demon and weren't out to kill me.... Maybe, once, we could have been normal siblings. Not anymore. I don't think anything will be the same ever again. Good-bye," Jenni said, a single tear rolling down her face, followed by it's mate. They fell into oblivion, leaving Jenni on her own. Jenni had the impulse to sing something and decided on a song that she had written a short while before all of this happened.
"I'm cryin' in the rain, I think about you. I'm cryin' in the rain, I feel your arms. I'm cryin' in the rain, I see your face.... All I can think about is you.
"I see you holding me tight.... I hear you whisper, "It's alright."... I feel you lift me up.... I smell the pine trees....
"I'm cryin' in the rain, I think about you. I'm cryin' in the rain, I feel your arms. I'm cryin' in the rain, I see your face.... All I can think about is you.
"I see the trees rushing past.... I hear your steady breathing.... I feel the wind whipping past.... I smell the salt of the sea....
"I'm cryin' in the rain, I think about you. I'm cryin' in the rain, I feel your arms. I'm cryin' in the rain, I see your face.... All I can think about is you! All I can think about is you......" (Okay, I do own this song. NO STEALING OR USING WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!! .) Jenni sang, her voice rising in a sweet, yet sour song that she had never sung like that before. She turned around and trudged back to the temple, going to change for the party.
(End)
Okay, that's it. That's the grand ending of the book. Look for the sequel to "Kenshingumi in Modern Times". It SHOULD be titled, "Demons in Modern Times." Okay, see ya later! Please leave a review!
