So I think seeing her secretly as long as possible was the only way. The moral of my story (if there is a moral) was to show how different the S/S & J/M relation ships are from each other in my interpretation. In my fic, S/S was more like love at 1st sight, etc,etc. while J/M was they got to know each other 1st, then fell in love. But S/S was longer, for 10 mon., while J/M romance, uh, just a week? *nod* despite the romances R very different from each other. That's the whole point of the fic: to show the different ways they are different! But ya'll probably already knew that…. Anyhoo, that's my rant, my analysis. So now enjoy ch.16! yes, dat'll be cool.
Serenity blinked her eyes open in her bedroom. The first thing she saw was darkness….her heartbeart picked up.
According to the moonlight pouring from the small window, it was still nighttime. Phew…..
Thunder rumbled in the distance, a sound she'd always been leery of. A flash of lightning. What a nightmare I just had….I only have that dream if Joey's in trouble…….for his life……but of course he'd be in bed by now………dreaming about his new girlfriend, I'm sure…..
She gave a tiny smile, and rolled over. But now matter what, sleep would not come again. Maybe I ought to call Joey…..to see if he's all right…….I hope he won't think I'm not being nosy......
She slid her feet to the floor stifling a yawn, and looking at the digital clock. Nearly one in the morning. The feeling of uneasiness would not go away. Serenity got up and walked across to her things, where she caught sight of herself in the dressing mirror. She looked like a ghost in her beige pj's, her long hair trailing after her. Her eyes looked too large and haunted, and the makeup from the makeover Mai had given her was smeared. Scrubbing it off, she picked up her cell phone (one she barely used because it could barely be afforded) and dialed.
No answer.
Another number.
"Hello, you have reached my voice mail……"
Where is everybody? Putting down the phone, she tried not to panic. There could be a number of explanations why nobody was picking up the phone. Don't be scared…..don't be worried…..maybe they're all dead tired……yeah……
No, I won't be scared. That's the way I always am….and I'm SO tired of it.......... Serenity began to change into her raincoat and boots with determination . I'm going to go and look for Joey…….no matter what! Or I'll never get any sleep unless I'm sure he's safe….
Her phone rang just then…… "Oh, thank god it's you," she said. "You got to help me!"
*****meanwhile*******
Mai, clutched at Joey's hand, studying the sky. Any minute now and we'll be soaked! The moon was starting to disappear as clouds rolled over the milky sky. But no rain fell. Yet.
The leader has shouted to his friend to go and release those…..beasts. Midnight bull running is so not my thing, she thought. Especially in these shoes? she looked down at her delicate $250 shoes. They were red, strappy sandals with high heels. Plus, the drug those morons gave to her and Joey were still in effect…….everything kept blurring and swirling around. Her heart started pumping in fear as they were led down right in front of those beasts.
But what choice to we have? There's too many of them……. Her eye kept straying to the straying animals' own red ones, mooing and grunting rabidly. A dizziness overtook her again. I feel so nauseous…….this had to be some sort of nightmare….!
"Hey, it'll be alright…" He was worried about her. After those thugs had kidnapped her, she was so pale, her skin was nearly translucent. "Can you walk?"
"Yes….."
He smiled humorlessly. "Can you run?"
"Ok, listen up." The leader said bossily. "My rare personalized card, that I won from the tournament here in Spain, is at stake. Along," he grinned fiendishly at them, "your lives, I might add."
They glared murderously at him, picturing of all the ways to torture his carcass….
"Oh come on. Lighten up. Aren't you tourists? I'm only giving you a taste of Spanish culture, you know!" the other laughed as if he'd made a great joke. "Tell you what," the leader went on confidentially, "since this is obviously you first time bull-running, and you are a little tipsy….."
"Thanks to ya drugs!" Joey spat.
"You can't think that we drugged you?" the leader clutched his heart in mock pain. "Aye aye! How miserable it is to mistrust, eh? But even though, I will let you have a head strat. Usually," he said, gesturing to the others who had gathered in front of the animals, "the people start running from there. But you two lovely folks can go and hide now, and I will signal the animals to be released in five minutes after you leave."
"Don't be stupid!" snapped Mai. "If you let those beasts out, how are you supposed to get them back in the fence?! They'll be running around the streets, loose! People could be hurt, moron!"
"Very feisty young woman you have there," the leader said to Joey, leering at her. "Still, I can see why she's a keeper…..very beautiful too….." Overhead, thunder rolled and rumbled. "Are you sure, senorita…..that's you wouldn't rather go with mi?"
"Not in this lifetime, pal!" they both answered at exactly the same time.
"Eh, worth a shot," the leader said with a shrug. He crossed his arms and leaned back, smirking. "Better go hide……it's down to three minutes head start now……"
They had no choice. Once they were out of sight, the leader signaled, and the bulls were released. The wild whoops and cheers of the other men filled the night.
****bit later******
Hiding around a corner in an alley with no streetlights, they paused for breath and listened. All was still except for their heavy breathing..
"Where do you think those…..those…..hideous animals are?!" she asked in a loud whisper, as he leaned around a corner to see any dangers. Joey suspected that those other men would do anything to stop them and make them into bull meat. His vision blurred suddenly, and he blinked hard to keep the drug at bay.
"Dunno……but keep yo voice down, or dey might hear. Listen----" Just then a huge crack of thunder interrupted him, followed by a thick, ominous rumble. In the distance, the other men were still shouting and whooping in crazy glee.
"For once, I'm hoping that rumble was your stomach," Mai muttered under her breath as the rain, with drops as big as baseballs, began to fall. They went under a short tent for shelter.
"Yeah same here......Listen, we have to get on a roof or somethin', so those bulls won't trample us to death."
"No……" she stopped and went a little ways off, looking around. "I remember this place! We're just a few blocks from the hotel……that way!" She pointed south.
"Really, you sure?" he looked over in the direction she was pointing to. It was getting hard to see because of the rain pouring in sheets. Plus, the darkness of nighttime and combined with the effects of the drug those lunatics had given them……so she might be mistaken……
Still, he had no other plan except to get back.. "Awright, den let's go!" Just then there was a horrendous crack! of wood splintering and the ground was shaking as if in an earthquake. The gallop gallop of hooves caught their attention. A nearby bull was charging……headed straight for them!
"Oh-kay, new plan!" he said, grabbing her hand and they ran for their lives around another corner, skidding on the slippery pavement stones. Mostly, she was doing the skidding, because of her heeled shoes. "This way!"
There was rickety looking fire escape, the lowest ladder just barely reachable. "Go! I'll give ya a boost!" he instructed, as she looked up doubtfully. It did look sort of shaky, not at all sturdy…..
"Grunt!" the bull, a big black hulking thing hard rounded the corner, too. It's bloodshot red eyes swiveled and honed in on it's targets. With a piercing roar sound, it charged, making the fire escape rattle violently.
"God!" she cursed and did as he said. Quickly, they scrambled as far as they could, by now soaked to the skin. Lightning flashed, making an outline of the bull's deadly looking horns, which seemed about two feet thick, as the animal snorted wildly and pawed the ground. "T-that's thing's shaking us! We're going to fall!" she shrieked, pushing damp hair away to stare fearfully down at it.
"No, we won't! listen!" he shouted to be heard over the din. "We gotta get to da roof! I'll bet there's some shelter or stairways there!" shakily, they both got to their feet. "Don't make any sudden movements," he cautioned as they climbed up ladders. "if ya do'll this thing'll really will fall….."
"Great," she said cynically, ducking to go through the walkway. "If the fall doesn't kill us, that monster'll eat us---whoa!" the rain had made a step slippery, and she almost toppled over a railing. The iron scraped her bare arms, cutting in jaggedly, making her cry out in pain.
"I got ya. I got ya," he said, leaning over the railing. Her arms were slippery from the rain, and it was hard to get a good grip. Mai dangled precariously in mid air, flailing helplessly. Booming thunder made the whole metal shake against the building. "Ya gotta pull yourself up! C'mon ya can do it!"
Summoning the last of her strength, she did so with his help and both collapsed to rest, panting while the rain, which had dropped to a thick drizzle, soaked them. Joey look another look beneath them, hoping the bull had given up. He didn't see anything, but he didn't trust his eyes.
"c'mon….." he said, struggling to catch his breath, "we gotta…..make it to da roof……there….there we'll be safe……." Fatigue was setting in hard, his eyes kept closing. We can'' go back down cause the bull might still be around! Up it is!
"I'm…too tired….." she buried her face in his coat. "So sleepy……" Her right arm had a deep puncture from when she'd almost fallen, and scarlet blood kept trickling from it, refusing to be washed of by the rain. I'm tired too, he thought, covering the wound with his hand to stop the bleeding. Which way did Mai say the hotel was? He looked left to right, but every place looked exactly the same. I've no choice…..I gotta call for help…..
Taking deep breaths to stay awake, he fumbled in his pocket for his phone. I'll call Yugi…he's the only one who can help us. There was a strange blinking light. "you got four voice mail messages….."
Checking them, he found out one was from his sister. "Joey! Where are you? Please pick up! I had that dream again…….!" He knew exactly which one; the one she always claimed to have when he was in trouble. I wish this was all a horrible dream…….so sleepy……no! I gotta call for help……I really wish I didn't have to……but for Mai's sake........! So he pressed a speed dial button and slowly raised the phone to his head, panting. C'mon….wake up......wake up......!

With a start from dreamland, Yugi snapped his eyes open. When he registered where he was (oh.... my room......) he was aware of a certain ringing sound. It that the alarm? Is it morning? But I'm still tired......!But it was pitch dark, with only faint outlines of the furniture around. Still nighttime........
Springing back with surprising agility, he realized their was someone next to him, asleep. Brrring! Brrrring! The noise continued. Then the ring tone of 'Swan Lake' started….
Oh. It's Tea. Calming down, he reached for her bag. Eh?! Tea?! Someone's calling for her…….something tells me I'd better answer it.......
"'Lo?" he cleared the sleepiness from his throat. "I mean, hello?"
Something like loud static sounded in the background. "…..yuge……."
"Joey? Is it you? Why are you calling Tea for?"
"…..oh, must've pressed……da….wrong button……" his voice sounded slurry. Instantly Yugi was alarmed. "….gotta help me…..Mai's hurt………" "Where are you, Joey?' he shouted, standing up. Nearby, Tea woke to his yelling, and rubbed her eyes, then suddenly jumped up too.
"Yugi? What's wrong?" she said sleepily."Who are you talking to on my phone?" She never saw his face so frightened…..
"I---" Just then there was a crack, and the sound of folding metal screeching. And the phone went dead.
"Was that Joey? Where's he?".
"I don't know………I have to call him back!" But there was no answer.
What trouble has that bozo been up to now? Tea checked the time. Two in the morning. "Well, we got to find him! he's sounded like he was trouble……" Again, she thought silently. "But how…..? He didn't tell me where he was......" they stood there helplessly, unsure of how to find him.
/Let me help you find him……./ the M.Puzzle glowed, and images of a dark, rainy street flew through yugi's head. A hulking, square black shape. Scarlet blood. "He's…..he's this way!" he said, grabbing a coat and being led by it.
"Wait for me!" Tea called, grabbed her coat also and racing after him.
******meanwhile******
Groaning painfully, Joey reached up and touched his head. The old, rickety fire escape had collapsed, and they had both fell with it. At least…..the rain stopped….A murky fog lingered.
The fog mixed with the one in his head. Nearby, Mai was still.. I don't think……..anything's broken…..he thought, shifting his legs around to make sure they still functioned properly. A shooting pain at his side. Ow…….he said in his head, too weak even to yell it aloud.
There was silence, except for the squeak squeak of rocking metal. We're on the ground……he thought dazedly. Why are we on the ground? He couldn't remember anything that had happened last night.
I'm…….so tired…..i can't move……the pain…… I…..couldn't save her…… the approaching blackness was tempting. …..
With a wince, he managed to reach her, holding her close, some part of his brain stil holding on to consciousness. Maybe I'll just take a five minute nap……sorry, but I'm so sleepy……just five minutes........zzzzzzzz........
"Joey!" a shrill young female voice cut through his fuzzy head. He turning his chin toward it automatically. "Over here!" Blinking hard, he tried to see who it was.
"Oh, hey sis." Then he did a double take. "Sis?! what're you…doing here!" he tried to jump up as pain skyrocketed down. "Ah!"
"Don't…..try….move…." her voice sounded distorted, but he could see it was her. She was carrying an umbrella, which she put down and knelt beside him. Carefully, she helped him out of the twisted, tangled mess of the fire escape.
"Serenity? Is that you?" Mai said suddenly, her voice sounded sleepy.
"How did you find us?"
"Never mind that! Can you get up?"
"No…. my arm……" Mai looked down, and gasped. "What happened? I can't remember anything…..?" She had a wave of nausea, not able to stomach the sight of blood.
"No, don't go to sleep!" Serenity screamed. "Joey! Come on! Wake up! You have to!" But there was no response from either of them. Suddenly, a gallop sounded behind her….she turned to see what it was…..
"Sis….get out…of ……here……the bull…….it's coming back!…….gotta run away!" Joey could feel the earth shaking and his sister looking around in fright to see where the sound was coming from. The bull'll trample her to death! Mustering his strength, he stood and staggered. "Run…."
But the pain was too much, and he fell to his knees, unable to do anything more..... They're both going to get killed……and it's all because I couldn't….."Run," he croaked out, raising his head towards her.
The last thing he saw was Serenity picking up her umbrella and…..attacking the bull with it? [a/n: whoo! Go serenity!] I must be a hallucinating……..!……and then a taller figure's shadow……and then the shadow got bigger and bigger……..
"Shake yourself to dry up, mutt…..but if you hit me, you're dead….." Then the darkness enveloped his vision.

A few hours later, Yugi was eating breakfast with Tea in the hospital, where he was led to. Shortly before, four of their friends were rushed into the emergency room. Serenity only had a cut on her forehead from when the bull attacked her, and Joey had sprained his wrist in the fall, plus some minor bruises and bumps. But Mai was under critical care; the metal had pierced an artery in her arm and she had a concussion. Surgery for stitches, plus hypothermia from the rain……… it looked bad. She was the only one not released yet.
They all waited anxiously to hear word, the only sound crunch crunch from yugi's cornflakes and a soft slurp from Tea's tea. Joey was way on one side of the waiting room, fingering his cast, while Serenity and Kaiba were way on the other. The two boys glowered at each other. "Psst……Yuge….." he said, he voice still in effect of the drug, "…..you think I could hit kaiba with my cast?"
Yugi gave him a sidelong glance. "Now, Joey…. That's not going to get Mai out of surgery any faster….."
"No……." he said, scowling furiously, "but it'll make me feel betta!" Yugi looked at him in surprise, sensing there was something else Joey was upset about.
I can't believe I couldn't save her. She nearly bled to death……if I'd only kept my mouth shut, and not let those jerks yank my chain…… then we'd never be in this mess…… He kept thinking of her blood that had ran through his fingers, seemingly unstopping. If only I….. what if……why….? Not able to play the what-if game in his head anymore, he jumped up to his feet. Beside him, Yugi looked up at him in alarm. "Joey....... don't go and hit him with your cast.......Serenity said he helped you and Mai to the hospital, you should be grateful......"
"Yeah, really grateful," his friend muttered sarcastically under his breath, still eager to vent out worry and anxiety through anger. It was six in the morning, and he hadn't gotten a wink of sleep. Seeing him, Serenity came over.
"Joey.......I don't like that violent look in your eye. And Yugi's right. You should be grateful.....he helped you."
"Why're ya stickin' up fer 'im, sis? He stood ya up las' night, remember?" he sneered."What a swell guy, all right!"He spat on the ground.
Serenity looked at him, pleading for him to understand. "He........had to work, last all." she said softly. "Work!" Joey said scoffing. "Is dat what he says? Oh, so his work is more important dan you, is it?!" Several nurses looked over at his yelling. "Yeah, I'm talkin' to ya, bowl head! Why don't ya go back to yo' computers an' yo machines and leave my sister alone?! She don't need someone who can't place 'er first!"
"Stop it!" Serenity hissed at him, cheeks glowing in embarrasment. Kaiba said very calmly and slowly,
"And you think that your overbearing ways is good for her? You barely let her breathe. Always hovering around her. If you want to blame someone for driving Serenity away, go look in the mirror." And what that, he turned away, but was unable to resist one last jab. "Oh. I forgot. You're so idiotic, you can't even find yourself in one."
"What. Did. You. Say!?!?!?!!?!?!" Now everybody was staring at riled blond boy. Fortunately, a nurse came up.
"Tu eres para Mai........?" The woman frowned, unable to pronouce the name. "Valentino?"
Tea was closest. "Si," she said nodding. "Como esta Mai?" They spoke a while.
"Well? What did she say?!" Joey looked at her anxiously. Tea shook her head slowly.
"She's fine, just needs a few hours' rest." Everyone sighed in relief. "The nurse said we can go see her."
********late afternoon**********
Mai adjusted the bandage on her arm and continued to pack. Ugh.....I have a gross looking scar now....... That night, they all made flight plans to go back to Domino, and she was sort of sad to leave.
So many things happened...... she thought. stuffing a dress in her suitcase. Beside her, Tea was humming to herself. Why is she so happy about?! Mai thought, irritated. Then something dawned.
"Ohh, Tea," she said in a singsongy voice. The brunette looked over suspiciously. "Bet you had a wild night last night, too eh?" She was referring to Yugi.
"What are you talking about, Mai? Stop playing games." Tea snapped, but an uneasy look came to her cornflower eyes.
"Me and Joey----that is, Joseph and I," she amended, casually folding a purple top, "went upstairs to check on Yugi.......and my, my, what a surprise.....you naughty Tea!"
"You don't know anything! You lie. You didn't see anything!"
"Oh? Let's see what my digital camera says........" Mai slowly reached for her phone, stifling her smile at last rather desperate look on Tea's face.
"You----you took pictures?" Tea spluttered angrily, face turning red. "Give me those!" She made a grab for the camera.
Mai pushed her with her good arm so she fell on the bed. However, Mai's teasing smile slowly faded. Error....? Pictures deleted? Darn, the rain must've ruined it! Uh, oh.......
However, being a good duelist, Mai was an expert in bluffing. "I won't share these with anyone.....if......you go out on a real date with him........just once!" she said over Tea's angry protesting. "Just once, and these are yours......" she said, swinging the camera in front of Tea's face.
"Whatever! You'd better not show anybody those-----!"
"Show anybody what?" Serenity said curiously looking over Mai's shoulder to see what they were fighting for. "I don't see anything......"
"Eh?" Tea looked confused all the sudden. Mai quickly said,
"Too late! You promised to!" Tea just shot her a evil look and continued to pack. Serenity wandered away, bewildered.
"You guys ready to go?"
"All set."
*******evening**********
They went back, this time in first class and all together, using Yugi's prize money. Except for Kaiba, who went back on his private jet instead. Serenity decided to go with her brother and his friends instead, since Joey had been giving him death glares for that earilier remark.
"But Joey! He wasn't calling you an idiot. He was.....uh, just joking.....!" she said lamely. He just gave her a what-do-you-think-I'm-stupid-or-something? look. Sigh......they'll never get along.........I should just face it......But the tiny flame of hope refused to be extinguished.......
Next to her, Mai was appreciating her cleverness in tricking Tea, who was sulking on her other side. By the window, Yugi was napping, oblivious that they'd been talking about him. Meanwhile, Joey was grabbing his chair for dear life.
"Not your fear of flying again," Mai sighed loudly, tossing her hair back. The engines came to life with a blast. Tea came out of her sulk.
"Oh yeah, I forgot," she said. "What, was he grabbing into the life preservers when you two came up here?"
"More like grabbing the food tray," Mai replied, rolling her eyes heavenward. "And then....stuffing his face full and falling asleep and drooling all over me....." she added, remembering.
"I-I d-don't drool," he said, fighting to stop the quaver fron his voice. I hate flying .....I hate planes.....but I don't want Mai thinking I'm a coward. Slowly, his released his death grip on the armrests. "S-see? I'm cool...."
Tea decided to change the subject. "Serenity, what's wrong? You look worried. Maybe we can help," she said kindly.
Awfully quiet on the way to the airport, Serenity forced a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
"Nothing......." she said, before rolling up into a ball.
Studying her, Tea determined, "You're worried about your mother.....aren't you?"
Serenity was dumbfounded. "How did you know that......?"
"Tea has psychic powers," Mai said dramactically. "She knows what everybody's problem is. Eh, Yugi?" She nudged him and he nodded absently in his sleep.
Tea gave her a twisty smirk that meant very funny, and said, "Go on, Serenity. What is it?"
After a long silence, the girl answered, "Well......Mom sort of uh...." she looked away ashamedly. "doesn't know......." she faltered."I mean, I'm worried because I.....have to tell her about.....me.......and--"
"Ma doesn't know about you an' Kaiba?!" Joey shouted so loud that he woke Yugi from his nap. "Eh, sorry 'bout dat, Yuge. Is...that true, s-sis?" he asked, his voice quavering with excitement. His aerophobia was immediately forgotten.
Serenity scowled, her back turned to them. "..........yeah........."
"All Righty!!!!Whoo!!!!!" he crowed, pumping one fist in the air; painfully because it was his sprained wrist. But he didn't care, he was so exhilarated. Mai and Yugi now fully awake, looked from him to Tea, their eyes full of questions. Serenity was not amused.
"You don't have to sound so happy!" She looked at him with wounded eyes. "This is a bad thing, Joey.......!"
"No, it i-sn't!" he sang, beaming, jumping about in celebration while the other sweatdropped. Serenity wanted to kick him.
"Uh.... someone fill me in?" Mai wanted to know.
Tea explained, "Mrs. W isn't going to be happy to find out about this----"
Joey interrupted her. " 'Not gonna be happy?!' Ma's gonna flip her wig. I dunno why I assumed you told her sis! You are so gonna get it!"
"I still don't know why you're celebrating your sister getting into trouble....poor Serenity!" Mai said, frowning at him.
"No, ya don't get it. She'll forbid Serenity to ever see him again!" He practically was rubbing his hands in anticipation. "Which means, I don' have to worry 'bout dat stupid Kaiba ever hurtin' her! Ha, dis is so great!" he finished gleefully.
Serenity closed her eyes, trying to block his words out. She had to face their mother alone, since Seto still refused to go with her. At least, in person. Joey still doesn't get how serious this is with him......he expects me to bow down before Mom's wishes. That's the last thing I plan to do! I'm not going to just give up without a fight!
"Your mother can't be that strict," Mai was saying to him, not believing.
He gave her sidelong look. "Ya never met er, have ya?" he said in an unusual, hardened voice. "Sis is her favorite baby. Ma's gonna have a heart attack when she finds out!" he grinned joyfully. "And when she finds out who it is.......she'll have a stroke!"
"Joey......." Serenity said warningly over her shoulder. Mai couldn't understand why he was so happy about his mother having a coronary, when she remembered they didn't get along well. Man, and I thought my family was messed up........still.........poor Serenity. She'll really have to give it her all to get through this one, it looks like.......
******night*******
Hours later, Serenity was still awake and worried about her problem. Tea was sleeping comfortably, Mai was watching the boys' duel. They all looked so fresh and unconcerned, she felt envious of them. I wish I was sleeping, too.......
I don't know what to do! Her head throbbed from the bull knocking her down, after she had hit it with her umbrella. I think even the bull was surprised, Seto had said, referring to her unexpected bravery. She had glowed with pride under his admiring glance.
I wish everyone would see me like that.......I'd better get to sleep and gather my strength.......singing always helps........Turning her head over on the small head pillow, she sang softly aloud, to herself:
"Though I tried.....falling out of love ...." I tried to fall out of love with him, but it's impossible.....!
"......I was so alone......" I have to do this alone! He's right, I guess.......
".........I will have messed up better, I should know......" Mom, no matter what I do, it's seems it's never enough.......
"............So don't come around here; and tell me 'I told you so'....." Joey........ please don't celebrate.......I feel bad enough already.......Finishing her mental tirade, she fell in a deep, troubled sleep.
Meanwhile, listening to his sister's sweet hearfelt song, Joey couldn't help feeling a pang of sympathy for her. He was certain their mother wouldnt approve of Serenity dating, expecially someone who was older than her. Older than me, even! Yet, he had seen her take on a bull three times her size in the defense of him and Mai, and he was proud, of her, in a way, for having the guts to do such a thing. She was certainly not the little scared girl who always hid from arguing, angry voices, instead of confronting her fears. She really is growing up, he thought with a fond smile.
Whatever happens, only thing's for sure......it ain't gonna be pretty. Ah.....he thought, folding his hands behind his head with a satisfied smile. I got it all......a beautiful girl........my sister again.......Plus, I got Yuge beat in the next turn! Fer once, life is good.
