"Tsukasa…." Subaru's voice was a barely audible whisper in the darkness. Tsukasa could see her breath in little white clouds in front of her, and he moved in closer. She could not feel the cold as he could, but she still shivered a bit. Tsukasa reached out and touched her hand. She felt it and wrapped her own fingers around his. They sat like this in silence for a while. Tsukasa wanted it to be that way for eternity. Nothing would have made him happier.
Subaru was perfectly content as well. But there was a bit of excitement in her heart in addition to the peace and serenity. She felt that way whenever she was with him. She knew his thoughts, and she could tell how he was feeling, but at the same time, there was a bit of surprise and a fierce joy that burned ever more at the bottom of her heart.
It was the same with Tsukasa. They were of one mind, separate but unified in all emotion, value, and thought. In his thinking, they always went together. Nothing could possibly change that. There was also a desire in him to protect her, to keep her safe at all times that gave him courage he had never had before. He didn't know what he'd do if he ever lost Subaru.
They never needed to tell each other, though. They would look at one another and they would see it written right there on the other's face. No need for words.
Subaru huddled a little closer. It felt so…so… real. Something you shouldn't be able to feel in an imaginary world. Yet it was there. She could feel his breath, his touch. Everything.
Tsukasa put his arms around her. Subaru rested her head on his chest and closed her eyes.
This… she thought. This is what love is.
She knew it had to be. What other emotion could be so pure, so selfless? She would have gladly done anything for Tsukasa, no matter what. She loved him that much.
"Tsukasa…."
"Yes, Subaru?" Tsukasa replied.
"I love you."
Tsukasa eyes widened in surprise. He hadn't expected her to say something like that. Slowly he pulled Subaru closer, stroking her hair softly. He put his mouth to her ear and gently, ever so gently he whispered to her:
"I love you, Subaru."
Above them, the stars seemed to shine a little brighter. And the two of them lay like that, in the soft light of the stars, content to be there forever.
Forever.
