"You're not talking much."

"Sorry, Doctor. Something's just bugging me I guess."

"Wanna talk about it? I mean, if you can't talk to yourself, who can you talk to?"

Sam sighed before asking. "What's it like?"

"What's what like?"

"Being married to the colonel?" Sam whispered.

The smile that spread across Samantha's features was priceless.

"The colonel? That's what you call him?"

"It's against the regs to call him something else. I could get into trouble for insubordination."

"Even on downtime?"

"Well no but..."

"But it's just habit?"

"Yeah."

"Or, are you just trying to keep yourself from getting too attracted?"

"The colonel and I have nothing more than an incredibly strong friendship." Sam retorted, a little too quickly.

"Would you like something more than that?"

"NO! I mean...hell...I don't know anymore."

"Tell me." The doctor quietly prompted.

The work had been long forgotten, and the Sam's were facing each other. The major had her hands tightly clasped in her lap, while the doctor had one hand cradling her head, while the other absently played with the fabric of her jumper.

"It's just that recently, whenever I'm around him, I can't control my heartbeat..."

"Your pulse quickens, the butterflies in your stomach are going insane..."

"And then he looks at me..."

"And for one brief instant, everything is right with the world."

"Was it like that for you?"

"Still is Major."

"Sam."

"Same to you then."

The two smiled at each other before a faint blush rose to the Major's features.

"Anything else?"

"What's it like living with him?"

The doctor laughed before responding.

"The first month was the hardest for both of us. We had gotten so used to living alone; we'd forgotten what it was like to share a bed. I'd get up sometimes in the middle of the night to get water, and when I'd come back, he would be sleeping starfish style in the middle of the bed."

"And now?" the major questioned with a smile.

"Now, if I get up, he wakes up himself, because apparently, he can't sleep without be there beside him."

"Must be difficult when you're apart."

"For both of us."

"Okay, I have one more question."

"The best I've ever had."

"That's not what I was gonna ask!"

"Sure it wasn't."

"Okay, fine, it was. The best huh..."

"Oh yeah."

Samantha began to think for a little while, and Sam noticed the tears that were welling up in her eyes.

Grabbing the doctor in her arms, they cried together, holding onto each other dearly.

The doctor, because she had lost her friend, her lover, and her husband.

She hadn't even had the chance to tell him about the baby before he died.

The major was crying because the other had lost that someone she loved. But Sam couldn't have that. Probably never would.

They pulled apart finally, and both smiled before drying their eyes and going back to work.

Twenty minutes later, the object of both their affections came bouncing into the room.

Both women smile.
