Old Fox, New Tricks
YU YU HAKUSHO FANFICTION

There was a fox, a little fox with silver fur and golden eyes, who grew up to be a great thief. He had nothing at the start, no family, no den to call his own. But that was all right, he was free and that was all that mattered. He stole treasures, great and small, growing in fame with every conquest. Then he began to steal hearts as well.

Many came to serve under the fox's banner. The fox accepted all who came, though he lived much like he always did. He was free and unfettered like dandelion fluff in the wind, alighting where and when he willed with carefree arrogance. Then, one day, a raven came to join his thieves' band.

The raven was different from the rest. He could dance to the fox's steps. He could follow where few in the band could even think to try. Soon, he became the fox' shadow and when one saw a flash of silver fur, one also heard the steady beat of coal-black wings. The fox's legend grew once more, this time to encompass another in its veil. The raven and the fox became the best pairing of thieves there was.

All of this meant little to the fox. He lived much like he always did, playing with what he stole till it broke or no longer interested him. The world was his playground and everything he could hold in it, his toys. Some toys were pretty, some nice, some dangerous, yet he played with them or discarded them at whim. The raven was just another toy, more valued than most for that one's abilities, but still a toy.

On a caper one day, something went wrong. The raven got caught in a bamboo trap and died before the fox. A tear fell from a golden eye, then another, tracing the line of one pale-perfect cheek. But that was all right, he was still alive, still free, and that was all that mattered. The tears vanished into silver fur. The fox walked away.
