Title: He Could Have

Author: K Gilmore

Summary: he could have fought... but he didn't want to.

He vaguely felt the knife slid into him. His mind, however, wasn't on that fight. His mind was on the beautiful woman who was waiting for him on the other side. Fred. He could recall everything about her, the way she looked when she laughed. Her beautiful smile. The cute little frown she wore when she couldn't figure out a problem. God, he missed her. Everyday he prayed that she would be with him again.

Angel told him to live this day as though it was his last. So he did. Long letters to his parents were written, loose ends of a lifestyle he never wanted to go back to were tied up.

Suddenly, he fell. The demon was gone. He turned to see Illyria standing there, eyes cold as death. He was breathing very hard, holding his bleeding side.

The he heard her say, "Would you like me to lie to you now?"

"Yes," he breathed, barely able to speak.

And suddenly she was before him. His beautiful goddess. "Wesley, my Wesley." She said.

His eyes began to water. He would get to see the real her soon. Any time now, she would come down for him.

"Wesley," Fred breathed.

And he was gone.

When his eyes reopened, there she was. His Fred. Waiting for him with open arms. He fell into her arms, crying. She held him, quietly whispering sweet nothing into his ear.

He had dreamed about this moment ever since he had lost her. Now here he was. He knew his friends would grieve that he was gone. But he didn't care. He was back with her, just as he belonged.

Wesley supposed he could have fought harder. But he didn't want to.
