Summer of Fate

Chapter 1 Return Home

"Aahh. . ." I sighed as I lay back, enjoying the summer's sun. I checked the boat's course again to see how far away I was from Mineral Town, my summer home. I refastened my bandanna as my mind began to wander.

I thought of many things from Mineral Town, but my thoughts would always come back to Popuri, the pink-haired, cheery girl I had fallen head over heels for. She could be a bit eccentric at times, but you know, she was sweet deep down.

Suddenly the boat lurched and I quickly opened my eyes in panic, but I let out a slight chuckle when I saw what the problem was. I had sailed straight into a pile of rocks. It set me back a few minutes, but soon enough, I could see the white sands of Mineral Beach in the distance.

I plastered on a smile, but as I drew closer, my smile began to fade. Popuri wasn't there, waiting for me as she had been every year since I'd started coming to Mineral Town for the summer.

There were three thoughts that came to me when I saw this. The first one was that something had happened to Popuri, she was sick, or hurt so badly that she couldn't come see me. Another, more disastrous one was that she had forgotten about me, because she had found another guy. The last, well, the last was Rick. That pushy brother of hers. I bet my bandanna that was the reason she wasn't here.

I docked the boat and looked in the shop to make sure she hadn't used the spare key I had given her to sneak in. I sighed as I saw that she wasn't. My mind wandered to the supplies and food on the boat, but I decided that Popuri was more important right now.

I began the trek up from the beach towards the poultry farm where Popuri lived, and suddenly I fell over. I looked up to see a dazed Ann lying on the ground in front of me. I quickly jumped up to my feet, and extended my hand to her.

"Sorry, Ann, I guess I wasn't paying enough attention," I laughed, but it was a dry laugh, because I was concerned as to Popuri's whereabouts.

"It's ok, Kai, really, I should have been watching where I was going," she then sighed before saying, "Popuri is at her house, but good luck getting past Rick. . ."

I nodded and smiled a bit. I guess option number three was the right one after all. Suddenly, Ann looked cheery again and said to me,

"Well, I'll see you at the inn tonight Kai. There's some big news, but I think you may discover it yourself," she gave a wink and then walked off. Big news? I thought to myself. The only 'big news' in Mineral Town was me coming every summer, what could she have meant by that? I shook it off and continued walking, I'd find out soon enough.

Ann walked out of the square and I saw a boy walking in from the other side. The funny thing was I didn't recognize him at all. He looked to be about my age (doesn't everybody), and he had brown hair. He had pale skin, and wore shades of blue and white. It complimented his hazelnut eyes and dusty hair very well.

Suddenly he began walking towards me. I felt a flush creeping up my neck; I had no clue as to why though. Luckily he couldn't see it through my dark skin. He walked over to me and extended his hand, saying,

"Hi, I'm Jack, you must be Kai," he then flashed a smile at me, and I was really glad that he already knew my name because I was too tongue-tied to speak. I smiled back at him, wondering what the earlier feeling had been.

His smile was so nice, so genuine. His eyes just seemed to sparkle whenever he spoke, or moved at all. He seemed so cheerful and determined.

I finally managed to croak out, "Nice meeting you, Jack," he just gave me another one of his smiles. I then also managed to say, "Well, I'll be seeing you around I guess," he looked down, and mumbled something. It sounded like, see you too, but I couldn't be sure.

"Well, see ya. . .Kai," he said as he walked off. I liked the way that he stretched my name out; it gave me this strange sensation throughout my whole body.

I continued on my way, but I had suddenly forgotten where I was going. I looked around and saw Popuri's farm in front of me. I usually got a twinge of nervousness coming here, but now I felt indifference. I blinked, trying to comprehend my discovery.

Maybe I was just so comfortable around Popuri now that I didn't really notice. I walked into the farm and sure enough, Rick was standing in front of the door.

"Rick, let me in, I want to see Popuri," I said in defiance He just laughed and looked down at me. "You're not getting in to see my sister!" He smirked at me, looking like he had beaten me already.

Just at that moment Lillia opened the door from behind Rick. "Rick, what were you yelling about?" she asked. She then looked down and saw me. "Oh, Kai! You're back I almost forgot! Come in, come in, Popuri's waiting!" Rick just sighed, closing his eyes as I walked past him and into the house.

"Popuri's upstairs, Kai." said Lillia after she had welcomed me back to the village. "I'm sure she'll be happy to see you're back." I nodded to her and made my way upstairs. I got into Popuri's room and saw her facedown on the bed, crying.

"Popuri?" I said. She looked up and saw me, suddenly not crying. Her eyes were sparkling with happiness. For some reason, I didn't share the feeling. "Kai! You got past Rick? How? Oh, I'm so happy to see you!" she shouted, running over and embracing me.

I smiled and began to tell her about what had happened with Rick. When I was finished she smiled saying, "I knew my Mom always liked you." We both smiled at each other, ad then I looked down at my watch. It was already 8:00!

"Wow, already 8? I have to get going before they lock up the inn for the night!" I said to Popuri. "Ok, well, before you go. . ." I looked at her puzzled, "What?" She smiled and kissed me. "Now hurry up, I don't want you to get locked out!" I ran down the stairs and started towards the inn.

I got to the inn around 8:45 and walked in. I was greeted by the usual crowd, and many "Welcome Backs". Then I saw him walk in. He glanced at me and we made eye contact, but he quickly looked away. He walked over to Ann and proceeded to give her an egg. She looked pretty happy. I smiled and went up to my room.

"Hey Kai, welcome back." said Gray as I stepped into the room. Cliff nodded, but didn't say anything. It was typical. "Nice being back" I said to Gray. He smiled.

That night after everybody had left the inn for the night, and the only sounds were the clanking of dishes as Doug and Ann cleaned up from the night, I lay in bed. I could hear Gray's soft snoring from the bed next to mine, and I also heard Cliff shifting around, trying to be comfortable. But my mind wasn't on any of these things.

My mind was on first, Popuri. Whenever I had kissed Popuri in the past, I got a tingly sensation that seemed to stay with me for the rest of the day. But today I had felt nothing after the kiss. And my mind was also on Jack, and what I felt in the square today.

What was happening to me?
