Chapter 3
True Feelings
The next day I woke up with a yawn and looked at my clock. It was already 6:30. I hopped out of bed and was fixing myself up for the day when I heard a knock on the door.
"Kai, are you in there?" called Jack from the other side of the door. I froze, trying to decide whether to answer or not. I didn't have much of a choice though, because the next minute he stepped inside.
"Uhm . . . Hey, Jack" I said as he came in. He smiled at me, "Hello, Kai" he replied, nodding. We shook hands, which caused me to go into a blushing fit again. Jack sat down on the edge of my bed. I joined him soon after.
"So, I thought I was supposed to come over to your place later?" I said to him. Jack just shrugged, "Well, I had some time this morning so I just decided to drop in." I nodded. He then looked me straight in the eyes and gave a half-smile. I felt a drop of sweat snake its way down my face.
He suddenly looked away and got up, examining things around the room. When he was done with his little 'exploration' he turned back to me.
"So, are you doing anything tonight?" he asked. I let out a shaky laugh before replying, "Heh, no, I don't . . . think I am anyway. . ." I had to be careful what I promised him. I still had to keep Popuri in mind as well. He smiled at me and I forgot about Popuri.
"Well, I was wondering if maybe tonight you'd come up to the mountain with me. It's supposed to be a full moon tonight, and I figured you might want to take a break and enjoy the view from up there." If I hadn't been sitting I would have collapsed. Instead, I just smiled and said, "Sure thing, Jack."
He smiled, "Great! I'll swing by the beach shack around 8, sound good?" I nodded. He walked out the door, but with out first saying, "Good-bye, Kaaai."
As I walked towards the shack, I kept replaying our conversation over and over again in my head. Had he just asked me to come as a friend, or was this supposed to be a date? It sounded like a date to me. But why would Jack ask me on a date? And if he was, why would I want to go?
With these thoughts swirling around in my head I reached the shack. I expected a slow day as usual, but I wasn't expecting Popuri. At least not this early.
"Hello, Kai!" she said cheerfully as she walked in. But it was her fake cheerful voice. She was mad at me from yesterday. 'Good, be mad at me' I thought to myself, smiling. "Why hello Poppy!" I said, as if nothing was wrong.
"Kai, don't call me that anymore!" she practically screamed at me. "Why not, baby girl?" I asked her, my voice dripping with false concern. "Not that either!" she shouted at me. "You blew me off yesterday so you could talk to Jack! I watched you! So I guess if you think I'm not as important as Jack, you can start spending more time with your new friend than your girlfriend, which I no longer am!" she screamed, throwing the necklace I had given her last year to the ground. It shattered into hundreds of tiny pieces.
"I never want to speak to you again! In fact, never get within 10 feet of me ever, ever again KAI!" she shouted on her way out the door. I sighed, falling to my knees. Such a beautiful necklace, shattered all over my clean floor!
At 7:30 I closed up the cash register and put away everything from the day. I walked out side and wiped the sweat off my forehead. I had had only a few customers today, but it was hot as heck in that cramped shack. At about 7:50 I saw Jack walking into the beach.
He made his way over to me and we both smiled. "Ready to go?" he asked me. I nodded, and we set off for the mountain.
I looked up at the stars as we passed through the town. There really would be a beautiful moon tonight. I looked down and over at Jack and noticed he had been staring at me. He suddenly looked away and I began to blush.
"So, uh . . . Popuri and I broke up today," I informed him. He nodded, "I saw her earlier today and she told me. I'm sorry I messed things up for you guys. . ." I shook my head, "It's not your fault, it was mine, I was acting like a total jerk to her."
Jack then smiled like he knew something I didn't. "What?" I asked as we neared the mountain's peak. "It's nothing" replied Jack, shaking his head.
Once we made our way up to the peak, we climbed to the highest point. Jack looked over everything below us, smiling; I barely had the courage to look down at all. Instead I backed up a few steps. He followed me downwards.
"Scared of heights?" he asked. I shook my head, not wanting to admit that I had a huge phobia of heights. Jack smiled, "It's ok, I used to hate heights too, but then somebody taught me that I should overcome my fears, and always trust my instincts, even when I'm not sure that's what I want to do."
"Come look at this view." He said warmly, grabbing my arm and pulling me up. We bumped shoulders as I walked up. "Now close your eyes." he told me, and I did. "Think of the thing you would like the most right now, and then open your eyes." I thought of him, he was what I wanted right now, but of course I didn't tell him that.
Instead, I opened my eyes and looked down. The view was spectacular! "Wow. . ." I whispered, and he smiled. "See, I told you the view was good."
I looked up and saw he had been staring at me again. This time he didn't look away, and I saw a full blush braking out on his face. He looked up at the sky and I followed his gaze.
As I did, I saw the moon coming out from behind a cloud. Its yellow, hazy light shone down on us as if it were a spotlight. We both looked down and he looked me in he eyes again and asked, "Have you ever kissed somebody under a full moon?"
I slowly shook my head, and then replied, "But there's a first time for everything I suppose. . ." We both stepped closer together. He put one arm around my waist, and the other snaked around to the back of my head; I followed his lead, closing my eyes as we leaned in. I could feel his breath on my face now, and finally our lips found each other's.
We finally pulled away, and he smiled. "You're a very good kisser, you know." We both laughed and started down the mountain.
We stopped when we got to his farm, and I looked down at my watch. "Shoot! The inn's already locked up for the night." he just smiled, "You could always stay with me."
"Is there really enough room, I mean, I don't want to. . ." I stopped as he put his finger to my lips. "Come in." he said, his voice firmer now, but still warm.
As I lay in bed that night, I felt Jack's warmness next to me. I heard his deep breaths that he took in and out, in and out, and it eventually lulled me to sleep, but not before wondering. . .
What happens now?

A/N: Fwee! The relationship heats up! I like this chapter, a lot actually. I guess taking a break from AWL can be useful after all. Anyway, I wrote this because I had nothing better to do since my bro is using the Gamecube, and I like the result. Oh, and about Kai sleeping at Jack's house, do not think what you may be thinking, ok, they just kissed for the first time, they wouldn't go that fast. O_o
