The Way It Ends

Dressed in his white tuxedo, which set off his white hair, Ron Stoppable scanned the crowded gymnasium. The banner on the wall stated boldly "Middleton High Class of 2004 65 Year Reunion!" There was no sign of her, his brave partner in fighting evil. They had each gone off to different colleges and lost track of each other. But thoughts of her had filled his whole life. He had never married.
Outside, eyes were watching the building through night vision goggles. These goggles might be expected in the hands of a Navy Seal but in this case were being held by a rather petite elderly woman. She was thin and still had a few traces of red in her hair, which she wore in a gray bun.
Ron slowly limped across the auditorium, leaning on his cane. Who was he kidding? She probably wouldn't show up. Who knew if she was even alive? The slim chance of seeing her was the only reason he'd come to this depressing place. Why would he want to be in a room full of half-dead shuffling people basking in the old days of high school, days long forgotten.....
The figure that was Kim looked down at Middleton High and wondered what she was doing there. It was almost as though she was standing guard- but that wasn't her 'thing' anymore. She had been replaced a long time ago. Of course, her enemies were all dead now too. But she could remember when it all changed. When Betty was replaced and new laws were passed to get 'tougher on crime.' When United Crime Fighting Forces took over. When they wanted to train her to use a gun and then insisted that she carry it. "The villains are getting more dangerous," they said. "You need protection." And then they chastised her for not using the gun. So she and Ron quit. But United Crime made their lives a living Hell. She and Ron argued over what to do, growing more frustrated and alienated from each other.
And then Drakken and Shego were taken down. Drakken had been hatching a predictably outlandish plan, but one apparently ambitious and threatening enough to be worthy of UCFF's attention. They sent agents storming into Drakken's lair- UCFF hailed it a success, with only negligible casualties on the UCFF side. Shego was shot dead in the raid. Drakken was treated to a televised execution for "high crimes against the civilized nations." Things were different after that. Just different. As soon as she heard the news about Shego and Drakken, she got on bus to go to college on the other side of the nation, leaving Middleton, never to look back. She had never again said a word to Ron- not out of anger towards him- just because she was running away.
Ron wasn't going to be at this place. Surely, he felt like she did. Surely, he knew that Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable were over, and there was nothing left for them, here or anywhere else. Turning her face away, Kim let herself be swallowed up by the darkness.
Ron sighed. Dismally, he walked toward the exit, smiling and nodding to several wrinkled faces he did not recognize on the way. The sky outside was empty, bereft of stars, and he felt empty inside. Just one last thing to do. He pulled out an object and pushed some buttons. "No," he said. "No, Wade, she didn't show. I don't know if.....Ok. Well all right. Yeah, that's all.....Except, it's good to talk to you Wade. Really good to.....ok...talk to you soon....Keep in touch..."
