Chp. 5.
'Indicates individual thoughts.'
[Indicates telepathic communication.]
A few days had passed since Clark and the mutant's encounter with the meteor freak. Rogue had a million questions running through her mind about Clark. 'Was he a mutant? He had to be.' She thought. 'No normal person has strength like that. That's got to be how his alarm clock was destroyed.' Rogue watched out of the corner of her eye as she, he and Pete walked through the halls of Smallville High. She still wondered if she should confront Clark with what she saw but was unsure.
Only a couple of days after the battle Rogue and Kurt had talked and found out they'd both witnessed the same thing. The Nightcrawler was just as amazed as Rogue when they saw Clark launch the meteor mutant through the air like that. They had also talked about sharing what they knew with the others but for the time being had decided that it would be safer if they didn't. They both felt that if Clark wouldn't want others knowing his secret then they weren't going to say anything to the others. At least not for the time being.
One month later.
As lunch rolled around Clark, Pete, and Rogue were headed for the Torch offices. They talked a little about school-related things, such as the field trip to the Metropolis Gallery of Art next week. The trip was setup by the school for the art classes. It was mandatory that students go which meant that Clark and Chloe would be going by themselves since Lana and Pete weren't taking art classes this year.
Chloe had no problems with going on this trip. She would have an interesting story for the Torch and spend more time with Bobby. 'Alot more time.' she thought to herself as she left the Torch office.
Lana watched out of the corner of her eye as Chloe walked up to her locker to retreive a book. She'd noticed that within the last month that her and Bobby Drake had spent alot more time around one another. There was also their casual flirting that happened whenever the two were within five feet of each other. She suspected something but didn't want to upset her friend. Since with what had happened with Clark Lana wondered if Chloe would ever find somebody that she would really like. 'Hopefully, she has.' Lana thought as she watched Bobby walk up to her and the two begin conversing.
Lana looked the other way, right smack dab into Clark and Rogue. She felt immense jealously for the girl. It seemed as if that jealously and her own feelings for Clark left her in a daze at times. She wondered to herself. 'Does he still feel for me? No, he can't. He's got that b*tch with him at all times. It's like their insepperable!' She began to slowly grin. 'Maybe I can do something about that. It'll have to wait till there back from Metropolis though.' And with that, Lana practically skipped down the halls to her next class.

After finishing dinner that night the Kents and Rogue settled in the Kent family living room around the tv. Jonathon had his eyes glued to the paper while Martha, Clark, and Rogue watched the tube. Because there were only three channels there wasn't much on. Rogue was about to head off to bed when something on the tv caught her attention. It was something that was mentioned in the news.
(Cut to newscast)
"..and I just wanted to say how happy I am that the Friends of Humanity are here today in Metropolis!!"
(The camera cut to a huge crowd, cheering wildly as the announcer spoke then turned back to him.)
"We are here today because of one thing. Mutants! They are nothing more than an abomination to this great nation of ours!"
(Again, more cheering and applauses.)
"The mutant crisis has gotten out of hand. And will the current president do anything about it? No! He refuses to sign the Mutant Registration Act, which was recently re-introduced into the senate by none other than Senator Gary Jackson!" (A/N: I made him up because with Senator Kelly dead, this will probably be the X-Men's main antagonist for this storyline.)
(The camera goes in for a close up. The announcer is showing a photo of a man, somewhere in his early 50's. His hair is light brown with a little gray mixed in and blue eyes. The announcer put the picture back down and the camera pulls back.)
"Unfortunately, Senator Jackson could not be here today. He's in Washington D.C. on urgent business. However, the F.O.H. is here and will continue to fight againist mutants for everyone!"
(More cheers can be heard along with some in the crown chanting "F.O.H. forever." Meanwhile, back in the Kent's living room.)
As the newscast ended and went back to its regular program, Rogue began to shiver. It wasn't that she was cold, but afraid. She'd heard of some of the things that the so-called "Friends of Humanity" had done to mutants.
Rogue glanced over to Clark. Now she began to worry about him. Sure, he could probably take out some of those men, but a what price? He'd be locked up, possibly even experimented on like some lab rat, then be executed. She didn't want to see that happen to him. Especially since she had feelings for him. 'Feelings for him? Where did that come from? No, I do not have feelings for Clark Kent.' She looked over at Clark, who was deep in thought. 'Oh, he's so cute when he looks that way, wait, what the heck am I saying!?'
Clark hadn't noticed that Rogue was visibly shaking at this point. His mind was to wrapped up in the events he'd just seen. 'What if someone saw me use my abilites? I'd be labeled a mutant and hunted down.' I guess I shouldn't use my gifts, especially since I care about Rogue.... Wait, what am I thinking?! I can't possibly be thinking that way about her, can I? Ok, just repeat to yourself. I love Lana, I love Lana, I love Lana.' Clark looked back over to Rogue. 'Those white streaks in her hair really make her sexy. Oh crap, what did I just think?!!!'
Jonathon and Martha glanced over at the two teens. They had a hint as to what was going through Clark's mind and were worried. 'With this trip that he's got to go on coming up, I wonder if it's a really idea for him to go.' Martha thought as she watched her adoptive son.
Suddenly Clark got up. "Mom, Dad, I'm going out to the loft for a little while."
"Ok son, be back in here by 10:30." Jonathon told him. Clark nodded and proceeded out the front door.
Rogue got up too. She needed to talk to Clark. "Mr. Kent, is it ok if."
Jonathon smiled to her. "Of course, go right on ahead." Rogue returned the smile with one of her own and headed off for the Fortress of Solitude.
*
Rogue came to the top of the stairs. She glanced over at Clark for a second before he invited her to join him on the old couch. The two sat in a companionable silence for a little bit before Rogue broke it. "So, what's wrong?"
Clark jerked his head up. "What do you mean, what's wrong?"
"Well, you just seemed a little lost in your thoughts back in there." she replied, then glanced at the floor before back to him. "Care to explain?"
"No, it's nothing." Clark assured her as he got up from the couch and headed for the window of his loft. He then turned back to her. "Rogue, do you know anything else about the Friends of Humanity?"
Rogue turned her head to meet his. "Yeah, well besides that they hate mutants, what else do you want to know?"
Clark shrugged. "Um, I dunno. There history, I guess."
Rogue took a deep breath. "Well, the Friends of Humanity that you and I know of is actually rooted from other hate groups, like the skinheads, American Nazis, etc. When it was first created, it targeted such groups as Jews, blacks, and so on. Later they expaned themselves to people of different sexual orientations. They didn't actually become the "Friends of Humanity" until somewhere in the mid-1980's when mutants were first really starting to gain attention."
Clark stood there for a minute digesting the information. He was too busy in his thoughts to notice that Rogue was still staring at him. She wanted to practically tell him "I'm a mutant!" but she was unsure of how he would react. She still needed to talk to him about what had happened that day back in the woods with the meteor freak.
Clark, can I talk to you about something?" Rogue asked as she got up from the couch and headed over to where he was standing.
Clark looked up at her. "Sure." he replied.
Taking a deep breath, she looked back at him. "Clark, that day, in the woods, I, well.." she turned away for a second. She was beginning to thing that confronting him about this was a mistake.
"Rogue, what's wrong?" he asked as he put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. Rogue flinched slightly at his touch but didn't try to remove his hand. She turned back to him. "I saw you fling that guy over twenty feet in the air."
Clark slowly walked away from her. He was starting to become a little frantic. He wasn't sure how she'd been able to see him do that. He figured that she'd passed out like the others.
"Um, I don't know what your talking about." he told her while trying to think up a cover. "You must've hit your head a little harder than you thought."
"No Clark, I really saw you do that. I wasn't the only one who did." Rogue replied back.
Now Clark was really scared. What would happen? Would this girl turn him in? Would she be afraid of him? The possibilities were endless. Clark put both of his hands into his pockets. He kept his gaze towards the floor, never even acknowledging that Rogue was in his loft. Rogue cautiously made her way over to the young man. "Clark, I have only one more question for you." she told him softly. Clark looked up to her.
"Are you a mutant?" Clark's mouth dropped. 'She thinks I'm a mutant?' was the only thing that went through his mind. He looked straight into her eyes. It was almost as if she was, well, hoping that he was one.
"Um, Rogue, there's something about me you don't know about." he told her calmly. "This might take some time to explain." He gestured towards the couch and she followed.
The two were sitting on the couch. Clark was anxiously rubbing his hands together. He was sweaty for some reason he couldn't figure out. 'Is it because I'm about to tell her the truth?' He looked at her. 'Yeah, that's it.' Nervously, he opened his mouth.
"Rogue, um, I'm not from around here."
Rogue cocked her head to one side. 'Duh' she thought to herself. "I know that your adopted." She was getting a little agitated. "But I want you to explain to me how you threw that guy like you did." She folded her arms across her chest. "Now."
Clark gulped again. "Rogue, I'm an, an." he paused again.
"Clark just tell me, jeez!"
"Fine! I'M AN ALIEN!!" he yelled at her.
Rogue's mouth dropped to the floor. She sat there, comletely in awe at Clark's confession. A full minute went by and she never once moved.
After yelling at her, Clark looked down to the floor of the loft once more. He could feel her gaze and didn't like it. It reminded Clark of how much Pete had reacted when he told him. Finally, Rogue spoke.
"Clark, you, how, your an alien?" she asked in astonishment. Clark only nodded his head in response. Rogue took another deep breath. "Clark, there's something I need to tell you."
Clark looked up at her, his full and undivided attention now on her. "Go on."
"Well, remember when I first got here and we saw that F.O.H. commercial on tv?" Clark nodded. "Well, remember when I said that I knew some mutants." Clark nodded again.
"Well, I was kind of lying about that. You see, not only do I know these mutants, personally, but, I'm a mutant too."
This time it was Clark's turn to let his mouth drop only he didn't. He kept staring at Rogue for a little while before speaking. "Is that why you don't like to be touched?"
"Yes," she replied back. "That's part of my mutation." She slowly began to get up and walk about of the barn when she felt a brisk breeze rush by her. She turned around to the couch expecting to see Clark but he wasn't there! She turned back towards the stairs only to see Clark standing in front of her. She jumped back a little. "Clark, jeez. How, how did you do that?" she asked shakily.
"Superspeed." he told her calmly. He relaxed himself and gave a sympathetic look towards the young girl. He held out his hand to hers. She accepted it, and he led her back towards the couch.
"Do you want to talk?" he asked her as she scooted closer to him.
"Yes," she replied. It was an almost whisper but Clark still managed to hear her.
"My mutation is that I can suck a person's energy, or lifeforce, if you will, right out of them." Rogue told him as she settled into the couch. "I also get there memories for some reason. If it's a mutant, then I get their powers for a short while too. "
Clark nodded. He could see that even though Rogue was considerably closer to him now she was still keeping her distance. 'She's probably worried that she might hurt me.' he thought to himself. "Rogue," he told her gently, "I want to try something."
She looked at him suspiciously. Before she could ask him what Clark placed both of his hands on her face. Her eyes went wide with fright. "Clark, let go!! I'll hurt you!" she screamed.
A few seconds passed. "Rogue, if you'd hurt me, you'd probably seen it by now." Clark told her. He still had his hands on either side of her face with no intention of letting go.
Rogue looked at Clark and gasp. She actually had somebody touching her! And they weren't being hurt! She was so overwhelmed in her thoughts that she didn't notice the stray tears that fell down her face. She put her arms and hands around Clark, pulling him into a hug. Clark returned her hug without squeezing the life out of her as she sobbed away in his arms. 'It feels so good to have him around.' she thought to herself. When she had finally quit crying enough she backed away from him, their arms still around one another. She then pulled her arms around and began to pull off her gloves. Wrapping one of her hands and another she placed on his face.
Very gently, and, as if worried she could still hurt him, Rogue pulled Clark into a very deep and passionate kiss. She'd never felt more alive than ever.
