2. ACQUAINTANCES

Remus and the others found June sitting alone in the kitchen. Albus was gone and they had picked the kids. Tonks and Bill left for work, and only Lupin stayed longer with new guest. And he didn't look kind, he was angry about something and June decided to look engaged in a paper. She wanted no more talks.

But Remus was still sitting next to her, drinking slowly his tea or other drugs, watching her intensively. What? She killed somebody or something? She hated being watched. But decided not to move. It might have been a place where he lived and she could have been only a guest, but it was not he damn fault and he should not behave in such a rude way. Remus cleared his throat and spoke; June, however, did not move.

'So, tell me June, why are you back in here.' His voice was cold and unpleasant. June decided she didn't like that; she also knew she was an adult, on her own and she could answer as impersonal as if they had never met before.

'Why?' she was still reading the paper, taking a large swallow of butterbeer. 'Didn't you miss me?'

Lupin waited a while and then spoke, slowly, silently and seriously.

'I just don't understand. You left, everything seemed ended, now you're back, just like that, what are you here for, or: for whom, any why after so many lonely years. It's a really bad manner to appear after that, June. And I still don't know why had you left. Fuck, you seemed to be happy together, what happened?'

June lifted her head and gazed straight into Lupin's gray eyes. Why didn't he want to leave her alone. She was the one who had spent ages alone in Argentina, not him and not his blockheaded friend. God, why was she to experience that once more?

'Why? Didn't your precious friend tell you? So why should I?'

'I only know he was so extremely sad, June? He's never spoken about...'

'Yeah, well, was it sadness or stupidity, Remus, my dear.'

'What happened' urged Remus, raising his voice. June glanced at him with disgust and smiled maliciously.

'I already had a conversation about the past today, Remus. And I think I overdosed. Would you please leave me alone?'

'Why did you go?' was his last, short question. The last chance, as he thought, to reveal his best friend's past.

'If you really have to know, Lupin, all right, I will tell. I would never have gone if he hadnt told me I meant nothing to him. All right? Yeah, it was a perfect day, you know, to realise that my life was completely useless. So, what would you have done. I took my chance to do something unimprotant and worthless. Just as he expected. And I am still wondering whether I want to save his ass, Rem.'

Lupin was quiet. He didn't know that and June's satisfied gaze told him she was aware of that. Sirius had never spoken to him about June's departure. He acted as though nothing had happened, but was quieter in a strang way for a Marauder. He never mentiond her name at Grimmaluld Place and asked no questions. Lupin was quite fond of that: he did not know where June was and he had almost forgot about her. And there she was, sitting in his kitchen, getting angry about the past and the future and, Remus had to admit, all misfortunes that met her were caused by Sirius. He had no idea (or couldn't believe in such a simple explanation) why had his friend shouted at his love. Yes, Sirius was a mystery.

But June said something that attracted Remus' thoughts. She wanted (or didn't want but somehow was to) save Sirius. How is he...

'Alive?' he asked. 'Is Sirius alive??'

'Dumbledore claims so' she answered with no emotion. She was too old to take care about stupid emotions about stupid ex-friends.

'But...' Remus couldn't find words, he was thinking quickly, analysing the facts. 'But he fell behind the veil, he was hit with a curse and... I know, he could have stopped, but didn't want to. And, we all saw him falling, June. How can you?'

'You know, I'm a specialist in portals, holes or veils if you like. I'm not a specialist in your idiot friend's mind, I have no idea, why he wanted to fall. Albus, however, claims he was unhappy and wanted to do something useful, sacrifice himself fot the Order or so. Yeah, he was such an idiot.'

'And you can bring him back?'

'Though I think it's completely useless, Dumbledore seems to believe his fighting abilities. I can find him, but I can't make him alive. Unless he wants it. Remus, you know, talking about Black' she grimaced with disgust, but, as Remus noticed, she didn't call him Idiot this time 'is the least pleasureable thing I could think of. Yes' she added thoughtfully. Will you excuse me?'

She stood up and left the kitchen. Remus was alone, also very thoughtful. He learnt new things about his best friend. He knew Sirius wasn't saint, but he still couldn't believe he could have hurt June. His June... She talked so calmly about how she hated him and about her "useless" life.

'What have you done, Padfoot?' he whispered. He also hoped, they would have chance to clear all the matters.

June Sullivan walked to the hall, she expected none there, but a red-haired man was waiting there. For her.

'Hi' he said silently. 'It's good we meet. I'm Arthur Weasley.'

'I remember' June smiled and shook his hand once again.

'Dumbledore asked me to take you tomorrow to the Ministry to see the veil.'

'He wastes no time' June tried to smile, Arthur laughed.

'Yes, is it OK if I pick you up at 8.00am? We should get there early.'

'I guess I'll manage' now she laughed too. 'Oh, and can you tell me, whether Aurors here have a ghostpool detectors? I have only one, small, I would need something bigger.'

'Of course, before we go to the department of Mysteries, I guess we will visit Aurors' barton. I have to go now. See you tomorrow, Mrs. Sullivan.'

'June' she answered June. 'or Ms Sullivan.'

June watched him go and decided to rest for a while if she had to get up so early in the morning. She woke up, alone in the living room and it was about midnight. She felt sleepy, but hungry as well and that's why she went to the kitchen instead of going to her chamber.

She opened the kitchen door and to her surprise she met a man there. He was sitting behind the table, writing something intensively. He had long, greasy hair and a hooked nose. He lifted his head as he heard her entrance. He didn't smile, but his lips were curved a little.

'June Sullivan, I suppose?' he asked straightforward. June looked shocked, but it soon disappeared.

'Yeah' she said and walked to the fridge to have something to eat. 'And you?'

'Severus Snape. I'm a potion master, Dumbledore told me to help you.'

June said nothing, she made herself sandwiches, tea and salad, sat down and began to eat. So what he had been waiting for her. He could have woken her up. So what he was angry... She looked at him, he didn't move, but was gazeing straight at her with signs of impatience. He was wasting his precious time to talk to that conceited, bored, small woman. He had no idea, why was she so important to Dumbledore, and why was she behaving as if the rest of the world meant nothing to her. He couldn't know that it was the rest of the world who didn't care about her.

'Great.' She finally spoke. 'Have you got something to write? I'll need...'

'Are you sure you know what will bring him back?' he interrupted. He couldn't believe she was talking about life saving potions between one and other bite of bread.

'God, what did that man do to you all that you want him back, safe and sound.' She spoke and continued eating.

'If you're interested, I'm the last one who would like to see him back here.'

'Really' she asked suspiciously. 'So why do you care about the potions?'

He waited a while and decided to write down few potions she dictated: Amber Sirup; Daffodil's extract with moonstone (the blood potion?); Dragon's Brain Mixture.

'You don't like him, do you?' Severus asked as June sit down, full of food.

'It's the last thing I want to do, Snape' she said. 'If Dumbledore didn't ask, I wouldn't even come here.'

'What do you know about veils?'

'You know, people ignore things like magic places, if one wants, one can rule them. When will the potions be ready?'

'Amber Sirup needs a month to ripen. Do you know how to use it?'

'And once again you're worried about person you claim you hate, God, the world is crazy.'

'Why are you doing this if you hate him, Sullivan? Well, tell me, do you know him?'

'I knew him. And I have no nice memories' that was a lie, and she knew that, she could have lots of wonderful memories, she had just closed that part of brain. No memories. She went back to the potion conversation as if they hadnt spoken about the past. 'The brain mixture I'll have to drink a week before I go, to immune myself, I guess. There are lots of microbes, fungi and so on. I used to be allergic to that, I need vaccine.'

'Fine' said Snape and stood up. 'I'll prepare the things you want. And, yes, I'm doing this only because of Dumbledore.'

'He thinks Black can fight.'

'Maybe' said Snape 'Well, if you ever needed someonee to talk with about how you hate him and the job you have to do, don't forget about me. It as nice to meet you, June.'

'Night, Severus' she said and he closed the door. God, June thought, I meet people I should like and they behave as if I was the reason of all bad things. And I meet an enemy of Black and we chat like old friends. Help, I need help. How will I survive this?
