Sweet Silence
"That was fun," Kase said, throwing an easy arm around Ken's shoulders.
"Yeah," Ken replied breathlessly. He couldn't stop smiling. They hadn't just fooled around with a ball in a park for ages.
"The sun's going down," Kase said. Ken's eyes went to the horizon, and Kase laughed and punched the ball out of the crook of his friend's arm.
Ken tried to bend down to retreive the ball before it started to roll down the hill, but Kase half-tackled, half-dragged him down into the grass. He was too tired to protest and fell back into the tickling embrace of the field with a laugh. "You can get the ball," he said.
"Later," Kase replied. "Sun's going down, I said."
Ken draped and arm over his chest and turned his head to look at Kase. Little blades of grass attacked his face and forced him to squint, but he saw Kase smile at him. Kase drew one knee up and leaned back on his elbows to watch the sky.
"Beautiful, huh," he said.
Ken tore his eyes away from the curve of Kase's jaw and looked skyward. The dome of the sky went from orange to purple and was mottled with clouds that glowed like gold. It was truly very beautiful. There was just one star he could see, twinkling directly above him, and Ken closed his eyes to form a wish.
As he spoke it soundlessly, he heard Kase shift beside him, and then, before he knew it, the weight of his friend's body was atop his own.
"Don't say stop," Kase said.
Ken couldn't say it if he had wanted to, his lungs had forgotten how to draw breath. His body, already hot from running for a full three hours grew hotter still, and he blinked, lashes fluttering nervously.
Kase put a hand to Ken's face and drew a rough thumb across his cheek. "Don't say stop," he said again, his voice gone soft and thick.
The sky grew bright with stars. Ken never said a word.
