Chapter 1:
Scott stared out of the window in silence at the drifting snow.
"Jean...," he whispered pressing his head against the glass.
"Hey Sport."
He didn't have to turn around to know who was there.
"Logan."
The last person he had expected to support him during his pain was Logan. While Jean was alive they were rivals but in her death they had reached an unspoken pact.... a truce. Logan had told him that Jean had chosen Scott over him even though he didn't have to. That was when Scott had realised that underneath all the rivalry he had a friend.
A true friend.
"Think you can handle returning to teaching after this summer?"
"Why?" asked Scott with a smirk, "too much to handle?"
"For me?" replied Logan in mock surprise, "just thought it was about time you made yourself useful around here."
"Yeah, maybe," murmured Scott as his mind reverted to the mental picture of a pretty redhead.
"Scott?"
Blinking, Scott turned his attention back to the man in front of him.
"Sorry, just... nevermind."
"Y' alright?" asked Logan, genuine concern in his eyes. Scott just nodded.
"Yeah... actually I need to be somewhere right now... so..." without another word Scott brushed past Logan and moved down the hallway in a brisk walk.
Logan stood before the Professor and waited for him to consider his words. Te man looked up at him slowly.
"You want to return to Alkali Lake?"
Logan nodded.
"Why?"
"For Scott."
"For Scott?" asked the proffessor in surprise.
"And me... look," said Logan, "it's not the loss of Jean that has actually gotten him into this state, it's the not knowing whether she's alive or dead. She was washed away in the flood but she could still be alive. He doesn't know whether to mourn her or to hope."
"She would have contacted us," said the proffessor.
"Amnesia!"
"No one could have possibly survived such a flood."
"You can't say!"
The Proffessor was silent for a few moments. Then gazing into Logan's eyes intently he said,
"Alright, you may go be it only to ease your mind."
"Thanks," said Logan as he turned to leave.
"Is Scott with you on this?"
"I haven't told him yet," said Logan, "if I find out the truth I'll deal with it depending on its nature."
With that he shut the door behind him leaving the proffessor to his thoughts.
Scott frowned as he watched Logan mount his motorbike a speed off through the snow and through the gates of the Insititute.
Where the hell was he off to?
Maybe I should just as the Proffessor.
"He WHAT?!" yelled Cyclops.
"Calm down Scott," said the Proffessor, "he's actually doing it for you."
"For me?!" said Scott throwing up his hands in exasperation, "I'll kill him when he gets back!"
the profesor remained slent as Scott fumed over the entire episode. Finally when he seemed a little more relaxed, the proffessor asked gently,
"Is it true?"
"What is?"
"What Logan said about you?"
Scott sighed and dropped into a chair, "I guess so," he said, "it has been bothering me not knowing whther she's alive or not."
Suddenly he stood up.
"I'm going after him."
