Chapter 6

Dylan turned to leave the room but not before giving Lily a smile silently thanking her for everything. Lily just smiled and gave her a thumbs up. Dylan walked confidently down the stairs. Remus stood below them waiting for her. He was so handsome she thought. He was wearing green dress robes to match his green eyes.

Remus smiled at Dylan as she descended down the stairs. The firelight illuminated the white dress that she was wearing. It flattered her body, accenting her curves. Her darkly tanned skin looked beautiful in contrast to the blinding white. Remus looked into her chestnut eyes that were shinning behind her hair which loosely fell into her face. She looked like an angel.

"Well hello there," she said reaching for his arm.

"Hi, you look beautiful," Remus said awkwardly.

"So are you ready to go or should we wait for the others?"

"I think we should," Remus said, "wait for the others that is."

"Ok, that's fine," Dylan said and turned toward the stairway.

Claire emerged a little unsteadily, Lily had pushed her. She walked down the stairs and saw Dylan and Remus below but her gaze drifted until she found Sirius. His shaggy hair fell down into his eyes as he it out of his face and looked down at his black dress robes. Claire smiled to herself, he, Sirius Black, was nervous.

Sirius glanced up at Claire and looked down at his shoes. He felt nervous. She was so beautiful. The blue dress brought out her blue eyes. Her jet black hair hung down past her shoulders and shone in the firelight. She walked gracefully down and took her place with Sirius.

"Hey," he said breathlessly.

"Hi..." Claire said.

"Look here comes Lily," Dylan said ending their short greetings.

Lily walked down the stair case but it felt like she was walking out clouds. Lily felt so beautiful. Her green dress fit her and made her feel beautiful and that was all that matters. She had self confidence tonight for the first time.

James appeared next to Sirius in his blue dress robes, his hair looked as though he had attempted combing it though it never seemed to work. He looked up and saw Lily, he felt butterflies in his stomach; she looked amazing.

"Hello all," Lily said grinning, "shall we go?"

"Yes," said Claire.

The six made their way down in couples leaving Lily and James walking next to each other both trying to make conversation but failing. As they entered the great hall the six were separated. Lily found herself pushed into a corner where she stood still and took in her surrounds. The great hall looked amazing. Her efforts had paid off. The candles of black and orange suspended in air above the dancers gleamed. The eerie music drifted over to Lily as she looked around at the decorations: fake enchanted ghosts from the past moved around the hall, bats flew above the candles, giant pumpkins carved into images stood in the corners. Lily smiled and set off to find a dance partner.

No sooner had she started looking then a seventh year named Amos Diggory came up to her and said, "May I have this dance?"

Lily smiled and took his hand but all the while they danced Amos looked away. Lily felt forgotten and soon let go and walked over to Claire. But Claire soon left to dance with Sirius before Lily had even said hello. And Dylan and Remus were nowhere to be found. Lily felt incredibly lonely and unwanted.

She sat in a corner and watched the students dance. Boys kept coming up and asking her but Lily knew it was only do to the way she looked. She was so sick of this so sick of boys. They only cared about the way she looked not about her. Lily refused every one of them.

James danced the night away with multiple girls but all the while he tried to find Lily so he could ask her for a dance. Finally at around 11:30 James spotted Lily in a corner. She looked dreadfully unhappy. Boys kept coming up and asking Lily for a dance but she turned them away. James excused himself from his dance partner and walked over to Lily.

"Umm...Lily?" he said.

"What?" she snapped. Lily looked up and saw James, "Oops! Sorry James."

"It's ok, would you like to dance?"

At that moment Lily gave into temptation. She had tried to disapprove of James. But she realized that she hated his fifth year self not the way he was now. She liked him at age 14 but at this point in time Lily was sick of all the other boys sick of everyone. She looked at James and let herself dance.

"Sure ok."

James extended his hand and when she reached up and held it he smiled. James led Lily toward the sparkling crowd of dancers. They resembled fireworks, their many colors exploding in rhythm with the music.

Lily put her arms around his neck and James slid his hands down to her waist. This felt so right Lily thought to herself. She laid her head onto his neck and slowly pivoted around the room.

At midnight the clock struck, it vaguely reminded Lily of Cinderella at the ball. She let go of James and pushed her way through the crowd back to the head common room. Lily made her way up the stairs and found the portrait she sleepily mumbled the password and the painting swung open.

James stood there looking at his hands which had seconds ago been touching Lily. He was amazed. He smiled. Balls weren't really to awful he thought as he walked down the dimly lit hallways.

When James entered the head common room he saw Lily looking out at the night sky. Against all his intuition he stepped forward and leaned on the windowsill looking out at the stars. He turned and glanced at her hoping he had not disturbed her. But Lily looked peaceful. She turned to James and smiled.

Lily felt something explode inside her when James came and stood beside her. She looked at him in the moonlight. For a second she forgot herself.

Lily brushed James' face with her hand. He turned toward her and before he could say anything Lily kissed him. It was a deep passionate kiss that caught him off his guard. Lily let go of everything, her fears, and her sense of wrongness. She kissed him.

James at first was taken aback and his lips didn't move but as she didn't stop he parted his lips for Lily and let her explore his mouth. He moved his arms down and held her closely.

They shared something so intangible that night that no one not even themselves could begin to explain it. It was as if all fears, all sense of being, everything had been cast aside.

Lily pulled back and looked into James' blue eyes. They stood there for a moment beneath the moonlight, the stars gazing upon them.

"Goodnight," she whispered and turned to leave.

James stood there in the night in pure bliss. He smiled to himself and absent mindly walked toward his bedroom.
