Chapter 9
Lily found Claire in the bathroom that night. She had gone looking for her knowing that something was wrong. Dylan was looking for Claire as well. But she had gone into Gryffindor Common Rooms. Lily knew where Claire would be so she took the loos. In their fourth year Lily had found Claire in the bathroom passed out with her arms and legs cut. Lily began to run. She was terrified. What if Claire did this again? She was not right in her mind hadn't been for the last couple of days.
She opened the door and found Claire lying next to a small puddle of blood. It looked strangely beautiful: the deep red against the stone white. Claire had tear stains on her cheeks. Her eyes were full of tears. Lily ran over and picked her up. Claire began violently sobbing.
"I can't lose them...I can't let them go...Jade...Not like her...You can't leave me...My mother...Sirius...Dylan...You can't die...Not like Jade...Poor Jade..."
Claire was shaking her words were short and broken. She was crying so hard that it made Lily scared.
"I see her face, pale, white as the moonlight, surrounded by her black hair like the night. The blood next to her. And her eyes. Her eyes kill me. They destroy me. Her big sea blue eyes looking at me. Pleading with me. Asking me to make it better."
Lily hugged her tighter.
"But I couldn't...I can't...And Sirius...What would happen to him...He couldn't be like Jade...He'd hate me...I'm crazy...Or you Lily, I can't lose you."
Lily hushed her and pulled her closer. They were bound by a tight embrace of friendship. Sometimes there weren't any right words to say. And when there are no right words the only thing Lily could do is hold her close.
Lily took Claire up to her head girl room and tucked her in. Lily stayed with Claire until she drifted off into a restless sleep. Her tearstains stood out in the darkness, shinning against her skin. It touched Lily, how someone could care so much about people, how someone could be so scared of losing their friends and family that they would purposely separate themselves from the ones they loved.
Lily went downstairs to the common room and pulled out a sketch book. Her mind was overflowing. It was near its breaking point. She looked at the paper, tinted by the flicker yellow and orange flames. She began to faintly draw the outline of a face in the middle of a starry night, the kind that you can look at forever. The kind of night that is truly beautiful. The eyes of the face held a deep sadness. A single tear drop fell down the face. The lips were small and a faint pink. The girl's black hair cascaded down the side of her face. Her eyes spoke to you. They were a deep blue.
"Wow, that's really good," a deep voice whispered in her ear.
Lily jumped. James was standing behind her looking over her shoulder.
"Oh...uh...thanks..." Lily said hastily putting the sketch book away.
"You can really feel her sadness. It looks kind of like Claire."
"Oh," she said not knowing what to do.
James sat down next to her and looked into the fire. He sat there next to her for the remainder of the night. Neither one spoke. They didn't need to. Lily was wrapped up in her worries. She was so scared for Claire. She didn't know how much longer Claire would last, but with James next to her fear seemed to evaporate. She eventually fell asleep on the couch.
James looked at Lily. She was beautiful. Her curly hair hung loose in ringlets around her face. The firelight danced on her face and made her hair shine. She breathed in and out slowly. James reached out his hand and touched her face. It was as smooth as silk. He brushed her beautiful hair away from her face and smiled to himself.
The next morning dawned bright and early. Dylan had fallen asleep on the couch in the Gryffindor Common Room waiting for Lily but Lily had never come. Dylan yawned and pushed her short hair out of her eyes. She sat up and looked round the room. Remus stood in a corner watching her.
"Aren't you going to come over?" Dylan asked rubbing her eyes open trying to push away last night's events out of her mind.
"Hmmm...I'm debating if that's a good idea," Remus said.
"Why wouldn't it be?" Dylan asked smiling.
"I dunno," Remus replied leaning in for a kiss. The second he touched her lips he knew he could never let her go. She opened her mouth for him and let his tongue enter. Remus loved her touch. He loved the way she kissed. He loved the way she smelled; like rain on a spring day. He loved everything about her.
Dylan pulled away and said, "Now that's more like it."
Remus laughed and pulled her into another embrace that ended in a soft kiss. He stood up and kissed her eye lids and her forehead. Dylan looked up at him and smiled.
"Ready to eat?" Remus asked.
"We're in our pajamas," Dylan pointed out looking at Remus. He was wearing green plaid pajama bottoms and a white t-shirt. His long shaggy blond hair fell into his hazel eyes.
"So?"
Dylan rolled her eyes, ran a hand through her hair, and held out her arm. Remus reached for it but slid his hand down and grasped it in hers. Dylan shivered at his touch. The walked down toward breakfast hand in hand.
"It's such a pretty day," Remus observed looking up at the sky in the Great Hall. It was cloudy.
"Yea, it is. We should hang out or something," Dylan said.
"It's Saturday, don't you have Quidditch?"
"Damn. Bloody Quidditch. It's not like we need the work. James is an amazing Seeker. Sirius, Claire, and Alice are the best chasers. George and Diane are awesome Beaters. And I'm a good keeper if I do say so myself. We don't need practice."
"Hey we could do something afterwards," Remus suggested.
"Ok that sounds good but I have to go and get to the pitch before James kills me."
"Alright see you tonight," Remus said and leaned over to peck her cheek.
Claire awoke late that morning. She sat up and felt a wave of sickness wash over her. She looked around, this room was unfamiliar it was blue. She didn't have a blue room. Then the thought hit her. It was Lily's head room. They were painted blue along time ago before the head colors had been established and no one had bothered to change it. Only the common room changed to match the head's houses color. Claire sat up and rubbed her eyes. She felt dead, nothing mattered. She didn't feel like getting up so she lay back down a fell asleep.
Meanwhile Sirius was running around the Quidditch Pitch. It relaxed him. Then on the horizon he saw a figure come down from the Castle. As she came closer Sirius made out the faint figure of Dylan. She was the first Player to show up.
"Hey Dill," Sirius yelled.
"Mind if I join you?" Dylan asked coming up to him.
"Nope, go right ahead."
They ran and ran their steps falling in line. They ran away everything. Sirius ran away Claire, Dylan ran away Lily and Claire. This was one of the first times in weeks that she was able to forget about the worries of her friends. It felt good.
They ran until noon, losing all track of time.
"I take it we have no practice then?" Dylan asked.
"Yea, James told me to tell everyone. He needed a day off to think about things. I just forgot to tell you. Sorry."
"It's ok, want to go eat?" Dylan asked.
"Sure. I'm as hungry as a mother," he said.
They laughed and started off towards Hogwarts.
Lily awoke and saw James lying next to her. She sighed and stood up and went to check on Claire. Finding that Claire was safely asleep she turned to get dressed. She put on a pair of baggy pants and a tight green tank top. She let her hair stay down for the first time in months. She gazed at her reflection for a second. She was not beautiful Lily decided. Not like Claire. Claire was like a rose. Lily was one of the many dandelions. She was nothing special.
Downstairs Lily ate lunch with Dylan and Sirius and then after a quick conversation left and headed towards the Forbidden Forest with her sketch book. There she spent the afternoon lost in her drawings surrounded by the trees, and the sunlight falling onto her face in through the treetops.
Remus was working on his homework when he glanced at his calendar. "Oh Shit," he mumbled. It was a full moon and he had promised to spend it with Dylan. He had to tell her now or end it. He had to do something. He was scared and sad. This night would be awful.
Claire awoke mid afternoon and struggled out of bed. She borrowed on of Lily's black skirts and a blue shirt. Then she went to find Sirius. She would have to end it today. He wouldn't understand. But if truth be told she didn't understand either.
Sirius spent the day with Dylan. They played Quidditch and then she tried to teach him soccer or football, whatever. He actually wasn't awful at it. But it seemed boring to him. There were no brooms or bludgers or anything fun. Dylan was like a little sister to him. He actually forgot Claire and their awkward relationship.
James spent the day reading, something that most people didn't know about him. But while he was reading he stopped and found the exact words to everything he was feeling at the moment. He wrote a poem. It was about the crystal clear image of Lily in his mind. It was of one time when they were enemies and she stood by the lake glaring at him, her hair ablaze. This seemed to stick out it his mind. And so he wrote this poem for her.
She was a glimpse of beauty in a blind man's eye.
A firefly in the dead of night.
Amongst the thorns she was the solitary rose.
A silver moonbeam piercing through fear.
Her simplicity was intangible,
Her hope indestructible.
She was lost to this world ages ago.
And has yet to be reclaimed.
