Chapter 13
When Lily stepped of the train she felt different. She felt feelings arise within her, things that she could not control. The air seemed to have changed, the smell was new. The whole world of Hogwarts seemed as it had when she had glimpsed upon it for the first time, its tall silhouette standing proud in front of a setting sun. Then it had been a foreign place as it felt now. Lily's mind desperately searched for an explanation while her heart reached out it arms and embraced the world.
Claire nudged Lily breaking her thoughts.
"Should we eat first or go unpack?" Claire questioned as they made they're way up to the entrance.
"Eat, I'm hungry," Dylan said. "Besides by the time we're done eating our bags will already be brought up."
"I suppose you're right," Claire said. "Lily?"
"Yeah, that's fine with me I'm starved," Lily said in a daze.
"Lil, are you alright?" Claire asked.
"Yeah, I'm just thinking that's all."
They walked in the silence of the setting sun all the way to the Great Hall. When they entered the noise took them off their guard. Young first years were happily talking of their holidays, several fifth years were telling jokes rather loudly, and overall everyone was chatting. Lily had forgotten how loud it had been. She looked around taking in everything as though she had never seen it before. And at last her glance found James' deep blue eyes.
They stared at her, gazed into her soul. Lily felt lost for the first time; she couldn't find herself buried deep in the oceans of blue. She remembered the lily and smiled at him. He smiled back causing little flutters to erupt in her stomach. Lily had never felt this way before, it scared her yet exhilarated her. She had the urge to run over to him and hug him, but she thought of their kiss. And with that simple memory she was thrown back into reality and pushed away everything except for the faint smell of lilies.

Claire looked over at Sirius and saw him sitting next to James surrounded by girls. He was laughing and running his hand through his hair. Apparently he had forgotten about her. Claire turned feeling the hurt. But what was she supposed to expect. Isn't this what she wanted? Didn't she want him to forget her? But even Claire, with all her love and compassion, couldn't let him go. She wished she could take it all back.
Sirius looked up and saw Claire looking at him with her midnight blue eyes. He scowled at her and turned back to the young Ravenclaw sitting on his lap.
Claire held back the tears and turned away.
****
Sirius felt Claire's eyes upon him. He didn't want them, well he did but she didn't want him so why should he even try. There were plenty of other girls like the one in his lap, though he could not remember her name. Maybe she could replace Claire, maybe she would love him the way he loved Claire. Not that kind of in love mush you get in those muggle movies, but the kind that lasted the love that was purely a friendship thing. Something that you could have for your best friend or the girl you liked.
Sirius' head hurt, maybe he was thinking too much. This never happened when he just let himself wander the halls. It only happened when he tried to find his way. Claire used to be the way to go maybe it still was. He didn't know. But whatever Claire was she was gone to him. He had to find a new path to take or to fall back into old habit.
****
James looked at Sirius noticing the absence of his laughter and saw he was gazing across the room. He followed his eyes and found Claire, then Lily. Lily...He hoped she had liked his present. Maybe he would have a chance now. He had thought about her all through the Holidays. Her fiery hair had haunted his dreams, her green eyes never let go of his mind. Her smile never faded from her mind.
When he blinked he saw Lily looked at him holding his gaze with her eyes. He loved those eyes so much, they were amazing. What he would give to look upon them for the rest of the years. Lily smiled at him and he forgot all about her eyes and smiled back.
He hoped that she would one day love him. It was all she could do for him after his 6 years of loving her. Yet even now his hope seemed like a slimmer.

Remus noticed his two best friends watching the only girls they loved. He smiled to himself. They would end up married to Lily and Claire. They would live side by side creating one overly large family. And though he did not see himself next door he still smiled.
But Remus looked at Dylan and saw her sadness hidden behind the façade she put up. She was deeply hurt, and Remus hated himself for causing it. But she'd thank him, she be happy that she didn't marry or love a monster. At least she had a chance at the world now that he was gone.
Remus was too nice for his own good. He and Claire had been made from the same mold.
****
Dylan noticed her two love struck friends while trying to forget her own feelings. She would have to move on. And so she led them through the hall to the furthest end of the table. And with that she turned her back on Remus. She shut him out of her heart though he would have the key she couldn't find.
Only a miracle could make her see him again. But there would be no miracle. There was not enough hope left for a miracle.

Lily left the Great Hall quickly after she had finished eating. It had seemed quite awkward to her. All three of them had not said a word, as they were all caught up in their own thoughts. And Lily could sense the pain they felt, but she could not do anything about it. She couldn't say any magic words to make it disappear. And so she sat in silence.
The hallways were silent, in an after holiday gloom. They were light by moonbeams that forced their way through the tall windows. Pictures on the walls were already fast asleep though it was only 8. Lily had an odd feeling as she made her way to her Head common room. She could feel something in the air. It was the change again for something had changed. Although maybe the school wasn't what had changed, maybe it was her. Lily shook her head, this was to much thought and she had only been back for a few hours.
As Lily entered the room and sleep began to overcome her. She collapsed on the couch and had just enough energy to reach for a pencil and her sketch book. She lazily began a sketch of a boy with messy black hair and big blue eyes. And before she could stop herself her hands had taken control. They had shaped James' face creating his expression, his smile. Lily was looking at it when a pair of big hands touched her shoulders.
"BLOODY HELL!" Lily screamed, quickly closing her sketch book.
"Hello to you too Lily," James said smiling.
"You scared the shit out of me," she gasped.
James smiled again and leaned down. Lily lifted up her face and looked into his eyes. He brushed his hand across her cheek. Lily shut her eyes and leaned into him. Their lips brushed slightly and they both shivered at the smallest touch. But James deepened the kiss and Lily parted her lips for him. He tasted her and it was amazing. Her mouth tasted like vanilla and strawberries. And so he didn't break off. And neither did Lily instead she pulled him down onto the couch.
There they kissed in the night, the firelight dancing upon them. There they shared what they had the first night back in the fall. Yet it seemed so long ago. It was like a childhood memory that one they had felt for the first time.
Lily eventually pulled away and said, "So James where do we stand?"
"Right here," he replied kissing her again.
Lily smiled and let him. She could faintly smell the lilies in the night air. And when she thought it about James was right. They stood together right here. They belonged together nowhere else.
