Authors Note: Oh my God, I am so sorry that this took so long. I have been up to my head it auditions, end of the year tests, and shows. This will be over very soon and I promise to update as soon as possible.

Oh and in response to one Review:

Claire is the tragic character of this story. I don't think it would work very well to even out the tragedy. And this character is also based on several of my friends, and me in a way.

Chapter 20

The stars shone out clear and bright, winking at Dylan. She was curled up in the corner of the stone windowsill stargazing. The white lights twinkling in the darkness fascinated her. Dylan had always been amazed at the faraway cosmos of glittering flames. Not only did the stars interest her, but they calmed her. Dylan was confused and frustrated. She could not even begin to comprehend her thoughts. On one side of her brain Remus' picture stood out crystal clear, and yet in the other Sean's laughter rang. She could not decide who she wanted to be with. And now she had too, Remus had told her that he loved her. She could not just ignore him, and cast his feelings aside, because deep within her she knew who she loved. Deep down his sea green eyes had never left her mind. But Dylan wasn't deep down yet, she hadn't reached the outer surface of her heart.

The wind blew into her face, awakening Dylan from her trance. She brushed her short hair aside and stood up. She turned around looking at the stars for once last time and then hopped into bed. Tomorrow she would think on the matter. Tomorrow she would study for her finals. But now it was time for sleep.

As she lay her head down into the feathery pillow her mind whispered the simple word, "Procrastination." But she was too tired to care.

..

The sun rose over the horizon, breaking the night's blackness with soft pinks and yellows. The lights passed through the curtains and fell onto Remus' dazed face. His eyes were open and glazed over. Tired as he was, Remus had not been able to sleep. Dylan's words replayed over and over in his ears. They would be friends now, nothing more.

Remus looked up at the ceiling. He had never noticed it before, but the white paint was chipped and crumbling. It formed little intricate patterns above him. It reminded him of a timeline, the patterns grew more and more complex over time and yet all along they were the same simple shape.

Finally Remus closed his eyes, picturing the timeline of yellowed paint and tattered edges; it eventually put him to sleep. And so the morning hours passed over Remus, allowing him to sleep deeply for the first time in months. His chest rose and fell silently in the spring breeze that drifted in past the ruby red curtains.

..

Claire had woken early and for the first time since autumn she had decided to go for a run. So she stepped out of bed quietly and walked across the hard wood floors over to the bathroom. Her bare feet pitter pattered as she glided down the hall. The morning light fought its way through the heavy curtains and found its way into the great Hogwarts. Claire opened the heavy oaken door and stepped inside. She felt herself shiver and the morning chills of the cold floor sent shockwaves through her body.

Claire tiptoed across the floor and stood in front of the sink. She looked up and gazed into the mirror. Staring back at her was a girl with porcelain skin and bright blue eyes. But the eyes did not glimmer anymore, they faintly twinkled. And the girl's hair was raven black and jet straight. It fell down past the girl's shoulders and ended smoothly around her waist. Claire reached out to touch the girls pale cheeks. She did not know who she was staring at until her reflection blinked.

When Claire thought about it, it was amazing how much she could change in just a year. But the more she entertained the thought of change the less she liked it. For maybe Claire had never really changed, maybe she had been like this all along. Maybe deep down, she had always felt sad even before Jade had died. But after the accident it had all come rushing to the surface.

Claire quickly finished changing so that she could allow her mind no more time to think. And then when she had put on her black shorts and blue T- shirt she stole away into the early morning breeze. She walked out to the lake and began to stretch. As she did she noticed how the sun's rays glinted off of the deep blue that resembled the color of her eyes. Claire stood up suddenly and set off running around the lake. She ran fast and hard. Her breath formed little steam animals in the cool air, and her shoes were already wet with dew.

While she was running Claire let herself slip into a daze. She forgot about Sirius and his new girlfriend. She forgot about how much he hurt her, for those who you love are the only ones that can really hurt you. She forgot about her mother and about Jade. She let herself fly freely. She could feel nothing but the wind against her face. And it felt beautiful.

Claire sprinted around the lake 5 times, which was an 8 mile run. When it finally came to an end the sun had come up and Claire was drenched in sweat. She bent down and stretched for 5 more minutes before turning back toward the castle. Then she made her way into the breakfast hall.

When she entered she found a very tired Dylan looking over 7 years of notes. Claire sat down and reached across the table for the jug of pumpkin juice.

"Hey Dylan," she said after drinking 4 glasses of the sweet liquid.

"Oh hi," Dylan replied looking up from the strewn papers. "These exams are killing me. I didn't even study at all last night. And the first one is tomorrow."

"I know, but it's just Care of Magical Creatures," Claire said. "And that is one of your best subjects Dill, so you'll do fine."

"Yeah right, I haven't even begun to read my notes."

"So what, you have all day to study," she said reaching out to get toast.

"Hey Claire?" Dylan asked. "Why are you all sweaty and smelly? What have you been doing?"

"Oh I just went on a run," Claire replied with a smile.

"How long?"

"Only 8 miles, I should have it up to 10 by summer preseason," she said.

"Ah, you were always a runner, it'll be easy," Dylan said turning back to her notes. "Now if you'll excuse me I really must be studying."

"Alright, I should probably do some of that too," Claire said as she turned to go. "But first in line is the wonderful shower."

..

Sirius opened his eyes and then closed them again rather quickly. It felt too early, but as he turned over he noticed the little clock on the wooden bed side table. It read 11:30. "Damn," he mumbled as he threw off the covers and stood up. Sirius rubbed his eyes and then reached over and grabbed yesterday's clothes. Did it really matter if they were dirty?" No. So he put on his oldest pair of jeans and a faded dirty blue T-shirt. Then Sirius ran his hands through his hair attempting to comb it, but it was no use. Besides it wasn't like he want going on a date or anything. He was just studying.

Sirius was on his way out when he looked over and saw Remus fast asleep. He grinned and then ran over and pounced on him. "MOONY! WAKE UP!" Remus' eyes shot open and then noticing Sirius he closed them again. "Go away," he mumbled.

"Nope, not leaving until you get up," Sirius said defiantly.

"I'm not moving, so you'll just waste your last day of studying which I'm sure you need."

"Nah, I'm good. You forget dear Remus, that I am the smartest 7th year," he said.

Remus let out a rather loud giggle, if that is what you'd call it. "Right Padfoot, I almost forgot."

"But my intelligence is not the point. You have to get up," Sirius said.

"Nope," Remus said and turned over.

"Please, what if I got Dylan to come and wake you up?"

"Well then I just might," Remus said with a smile, knowing that it would never happen. And he was too tired to see the glint in Sirius' eye.

"Ok," he said with a shrug and walked out. As Sirius turned away a smile erupted on his face and he set out to find Dylan.

Sirius skipped down the hall bouncing up and down. He ran into the Great Hall and found Dylan sitting alone eating cornflakes with a book propped up. She was reading and her face was passive, she barely noticed that she was eating. Her short brown hair fell into her eyes and the light coming through the windows glinted on her red shirt.

"DYLAN!" Sirius said as he tiptoed up behind her.

Dylan jumped sky high and screamed, "Bloody Hell Sirius!"

"Good morning," he said sitting down next to her with a huge grin.

"Hello jackass," Dylan said angrily. "What's with the smile? Who did you sleep with last night?"

Sirius pretended to look mortified. "Oh I can't believe you didn't remember what happened last night."

"Shut it punk," she said punching him.

"Ouch," he muttered trying not to let on that it had hurt him.

"No really, why are you smiling?" she question.

"Umm, I have a favor to ask of you," Sirius said.

"What?"

"Will you go wake Remus up for me?" he asked.

"Why would I do that?" Dylan said.

"Because you love me," Sirius said.

"Yeah right," she said smiling. She really did love him; Sirius was like her little brother.

"Come on Dill, please," he said and got on the floor attempting to beg.

"What will you give me?" she asked.

"I will promise quiet while you're studying," he told her.

"And if I don't?"

"I will be as loud as possible," Sirius replied. He was resorting to threats.

"Fine," Dylan said, she really did need the quiet. She got up to go.

"YAY!" Sirius squealed. He started to follow her. But then a certain Ravenclaw stepped into his path.

"Hey Sirius," she said swishing her long blonde hair.

"Oh hi Kate," he said with a smile.

"In the mood for snogging?" Kate asked.

"Anytime darling," he said and took her hand in his. They walked off toward the lake. Thoughts of studying faded from Sirius' mind.

..

Dylan walked down the halls, noticing how much she loved the sound and smell of them. In her ears the voices of students rung loud and clear, footsteps echoed in her mind, and the smell of books drifted about. She really would miss this place. Dylan wished she could stop time and never have to see it move. She didn't want to leave.

Before she knew it she had come to the Fat Lady's portrait. "Password?" she said.

"Graphorn," Dylan said. That is one of the animals we studied she thought.

The portrait swung open and Dylan stepped in. She did not feel nervous at all, which was odd. At any other time her heart would be about to explode. But as she made her way up to the boy's dormitory she noticed nothing different. Finally she found the door marked 7th year. She pushed the oak aside and walked in. Dylan had never really realized how messy boys were. But there were clothes strewn across the floor mixed in with Quidditch balls and school papers. She could smell the faint smells of musk as she walked over to Remus' bed. She looked down at him. His shaggy blonde hair was tangled and it hung in front of his eyes. She thought about last night and remembered his words, 'I love you.'

Then Dylan shyly reached over and shook him.

"Go away Sirius," he mumbled. "I told you, I'm not getting up."

She giggled silently and shook him again.

"Go away," he said more forcefully.

"I would if I was Sirius, but it seems that I am in fact Dylan," she said laughing.

Remus shot up and looked up at her. He felt very naked without a shirt on. And his face flushed red. "Oh...umm..." he said tripping over his words.

Dylan just laughed and jumped on the bed. "So are you going to get up sleepy head?"

He shrugged.

"Maybe you need to wake up a bit," she said feeling a wave of excitement come over her. She really wanted to do something.

"I guess," he said.

"Well maybe this will wake you up," she said as she leaned in to kiss him. All at once she felt like she had never left his arms. He pulled her close and they tasted one another for the first time in months.

As they pulled away he said, "Yep, that about did it."

"Good," Dylan said hopping off the bed. "But I have to go study now."

"Oh...okay," Remus said looking rather disappointed as she skipped off.

Dylan had no idea what emotion she felt right now, but for some reason, whatever it was, it felt alright. She just had to do something about Sean. Because now she was sure, that the person she loved was Remus. And he was the only one she wanted.

..

Lily sat at the wooden table in the Head Common Room. 5 year old papers were strewn across the desktop and at least ten books were open to certain pages. Lily had been frantically studying for her first test. She desperately wanted that perfect score. And so she had found her way here, where no one made noise, except for the spontaneous grunts of frustration coming from James across the room.

Lily picked up the closest book to her, Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them by Newt Scamander, and began reading out loud, "The Demiguise is found in the Far East, though only with great difficultly, for this beast is able to make itself invisible when threatened, and can be seen only by wizards skilled in its capture. The Demiguise is a peaceful herbivorous beast, something like a graceful ape in appearance, with large, black, doleful eyes more often than not hidden by its hair. The whole body is covered with long, fine, silky, silvery hair. Demiguise pelts are highly valued as the hair may be spun into Invisibility Cloaks."

She sat there for hours reading and rereading her notes and books of the past seven years. And so by dinnertime she felt prepared, even though she knew the minute she finished eating she would head towards the library for several more hours of studying.

..

James sat across the room from Lily trying to focus on the upcoming terms. But his mind kept drifting back to her. He could not get Lily out of his mind. And so when he heard her reading he actually listened. James knew that he always remember what the Demiguise was now. He had to thank her for that sometime. As the grandfather clock in the common room struck six, he stood up and stretched. He had thought his studying had gone fairly well, although he should probably do a bit more after dinner. Dinner, his stomach grumbled at the thought. He looked over and noticed Lily still bent over her books.

"Hey Lil, you want to go get something to eat with me?" he asked walking over to her.

"Oh sure, I wanted to take a break soon. This stuff is insane," she said gesturing to the messy table.

James took her hand and helped her up. "Well let's go then. Shall we?"

The couple walked down the halls hand in hand deep in conversation. From afar one would think they had been childhood friends, because their friendship resembled one of kindergarteners that had lived next door to one another. No one would've guessed that they used to be enemies. But that didn't matter now. All that mattered was the way the shadows fell on Lily's delicate face, or the way James' blue eyes shinned. It was those simple things that counted.

..

The six slept soundly, which none of them had expected. Their dreams were full of wonderful things, and thoughts of the next day exams were locked away in their minds. When they woke, they all found one another and ate together and waited together. And when the tests were pasted out all six of them remembered to smile at each of their friends.

And as they picked up their quills a sense of relief came over them. The first question they all knew as if it was one of the facts of life. "Where does the Phoenix nest?"

They all began to write the same words, as if their mind was all on the same wave. Scratching sounds could be heard against the parchment as all wrote, "It nests on the mountain peaks of Egypt, China, and India."

The rest passed by easily for them all. And afterwards they all thought they had all made a perfect mark, and so ended the first of the Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests.
