Quest of the Seekers: Elements of Transformation

Year One at Hogwarts

Author Notes: I know I usually save these until the bottom of the chapter but I want to let everyone know that I went back and put a star (*) symbol next to the dialogue that was parseltongue. For some reason when I put them in Italics, they don't show it that was on Fanfiction.net. So go back if there was some confusion.

Chapter 9: Elemental Potion, Not made Easy

Tyler, Jacke, Brad and Reggie hadn't started to really look into the potion until the Friday after their return from the holidays. They needed to find a good place where they could look up the potion without anybody around. They were sure that if anyone saw them, boys from different houses, working secretly then it would draw unwanted attention. They got a break by finding 1 of the few unused classrooms on the ground floor. There they set down the few supplies they gathered on their own.

"Alright we have the cauldron for the potion and we're ready with water so let's start."

"Calm down Jacke. We have to take this one step at a time."

"I know Reggie, it's just that I'm a little excited."

"Okay, first we have to find a good place to brew the potion with the constant flame for thirty days without it getting found. Any ideas?"

"Why don't we try in this unused classroom, Tyler?"

Reggie stepped in. "No, that won't work. This place is too public and we'll really run the risk of it being found."

Tyler's head shot up. "Reggie, I think you are more of a genius then you let on. No wonder you are in Ravenclaw."

"What are you talking about, Tyler?"

"Why don't we set up the potion in such a public place that we know for sure nobody uses?"

Brad almost tripped in excitement. "That's a good idea, Tyler. You're pretty slick."

"Well, I wasn't put in Slytherin for nothing you know."

Then Brad had lessened his mood as fast as it came. "But where is a place no one even goes?"

Jacke and Tyler were high in thought until Reggie spoke.

"I can't believe that I'm going to suggest this but, how about the broom cupboard next to Filch's office?"

Brad spoke. But Reggie, no one ever goes near Filch's place...It's brilliant."

"Yeah, no one dares makes messes over by Filch's place so he never uses that cupboard. We also don't have to worry about his noticing the extra noise because he's often out trying to catch kids out of bed and attempted to catch Peeves the Poltergeist."

They took the cauldron, which they filled with water and took it to the bathroom closest to the broom cupboard that they spoke of. After checking to see if they were alone, Reggie spoke.

"Okay, what do we have so far?"

"Well we have the cauldron, water, lily petals, tiger hair from our potion kits, a galleon for the gold and I'm sure it'll rain again soon so we could collect the rain. All we are missing is the turtle shell, which we could get in the student's cupboard. We still need phoenix ash, dragon fang, eel fins, snake venom, eagle feather, and a threshal scale which I'm sure aren't in there."

Jacke had moved out of surprise so violently that he had hit Brad on the shoulder. "I have a dragon fang." He pulled off a necklace that had a dragon fang tied to a string. "My dad gave it to me for Christmas when he got back from his business trip in Hungary during the Quidditch match of Hungary vs. Finland."

"We still need the rest and luckily we add those thing during the last seven days according to this book."

"Well, now that we have the ingredients for now, who is going to be in charge of the brewing?"

"Good question Brad. Whose the best potion brewer here?"

Jacke spoke. "Well Tyler and I aren't doing too well in that. We always partner and even together we run into problems."

Then Brad spoke next. "I'm sort of okay but Reggie here has been getting high marks from Professor Reckler all year. Why don't you be the one behind the potion, Reggie?"

"Me?...I don't know. I don't think I can handle that. What if I mess it up?"

"Of course you can do it. Besides we'll be there to help so you won't have to work on the potion alone."

Reggie seemed to be in deep thought over this. Tyler could honestly relate to having yourself depended on by people close to you with such an overwhelming duty in front of you.

"Listen Reggie, you don't have to do this, we could flip a sickle or something. We're not forcing you."

"No, I'll do it. It's okay. Don't worry about it."

Brad spoke with a sarcastic type voice to this. "Do mine ears deceive me? Reginald Falkner, "the responsible one", not taking a way out of trouble?"

"You don't really think I would let you guys do something stupid and not be there to get you out of it, do you."

"Wow, you're vote of confidence in us is overwhelming" said Jacke in a sarcastic voice beating Brad's.

"Well, that's settled. Reggie's in charge of the brewing. Let's start. Here Reggie." Tyler handed the book to Reggie. "If you're the brewer then you'll need to hang on to this book."

"Thanks Tyler." Reggie examined the procedure until he put down the book to face his friends. "First, we have to keep this under a constant boil." Jacke lit his wand with a simple Ralem Inflamare and put in under the cauldron before Reggie spoke again. "Next, we add the dragon tooth and 1 minute after that we add the tiger hair with the gold and leave it for the next 50 hours under a flame."

Jacke dumped his fang into the cauldron and then added a galleon and the tiger hair one minute after. Then they moved the cauldron to the broom closet and placed it behind a box to hide the fire's light. Tyler suddenly realized something.

"Um guys, how are we going to keep this thing under constant flame? We can't keep one of our wands here for the next 30 days."

Jacke turned to his Slytherin buddy. "Don't worry Tyler. I have a charm that I saw in our 'Basic Book of Spells' that I know will work. Infinite Sparkelido! A red fire could be seen at the bottom but it didn't ignite any of the items around it. "This charm is designed to give off heat but not pass on fire."

Tyler was impressed. "Wow, you're quite the charm man, mate."

"I haven't been getting high grades in Charms because of only my good looks you know."

"Really? You don't seem to have any of those to me, Jacke" Tyler said trying to hold in his laughter.

"Watch it" said Jacke warningly though Tyler could catch that he knew he was only playing.

Reggie pulled them out of this mocking argument. "Guys, the potion's done for now. Have you ego conversation later. Let's get back to the common rooms before we're missed."

"And before Filch comes by and hears us" added Brad.

...

The following days had been going up for the young wizards. It had been 11 days and they had dropped in the rainwater that had come down 2 days after they started into the cauldron along with the flower petals. After they did that Brad couldn't resist asking a very good question that Tyler should've asked himself.

"Guys, I was wondering, why does this potion require those ingredients? It seems like there all over the place."

"The book says that the elemental potion requires a little of everything on earth for it to be able to give us the ability to harness any of the elements" answered Tyler.

"Oh. Well this potion seems to be coming up quite well, doesn't it?"

Reggie stepped in. "Careful guys. The hardest parts are yet to come like getting phoenix ash and snake venom. They're going to be the hardest."

Tyler turned his head away. In truth, getting snake venom would be easy. All he had to ask was for Chaos to give him some. But he wouldn't tell his friends that. Jacke broke into his thoughts.

"Tyler, are you listening? Earth to Tyler."

"Huh? What?

"I said that I think Dumbledore had the ash we need. I was sent to his office once when McGonagall caught me after breakfast that day with Moore. I saw a phoenix on a perch in his office so I'm sure we could get some if we could get into his office."

"Yeah, that seems like a good plan."

Reggie looked at the pair like they announced that they killed somebody. "Are you two mad?! Stealing from the headmaster is the very last thing we should do. If we're caught then we'll be expelled for sure when they see what we were going to do."

"Reggie, what choice do we have? If we don't get the ash in 3 days, according to the book, then the potion will be worthless without it. Dumbledore's phoenix is the only one that we know is available. Unless you could find us another phoenix then do tell."

Tyler could see the conclusion forming on Reggie's face. They needed Dumbledore's bird but Tyler was absorbing what Reggie said. He knew he was able to fool his friends with his lie of how he got the book but Professor Dumbledore wouldn't fall for it. If they were found out then the headmaster would turn him in along with his father and grandfather to Bartemius Crouch of the Department of Law Enforcement where they would be sentenced quickly to Azkaban especially during these times. Maybe trying to be elementals was a bad idea. He figured trying this with friends would be better than doing it alone but now it sounded stupid. Brad then interrupted his thoughts.

"Reggie, how about 1 of us make something happen which is enough to get us to the headmaster's office and take a vile of the ash while making it look like we're petting the phoenix."

"Great plan Brad! How about I set off some Dr. Filibuster fireworks and dungbombs in a corridor to get me sent to the headmaster's office with a vile and get the ash."

"No, I'll do it Jacke."

"Tyler? You're going to do it? Why you?"

"Well...you were already sent there but I still have a clean slate so I'll do it."

The truth was that Tyler decided that he wouldn't have his friends share his fate and if he was caught then he'd claim he was acting alone. After saying he'd be the volunteer the others said, "okay" to his proposal and went back to tending the potion.

...

Tyler set off the fireworks and dungbombs like he planned right outside the Great Hall after dinner so it would be a big enough disaster to get him sent to the headmaster for sure. And surprisingly, it had actually worked. Professor McGonagall caught Tyler and took him to the headmaster's office. She led him to a stony gargoyle.

"Honestly, right outside the Great Hall of all places. Sugar Quill."

After saying that the gargoyle started to go up with a staircase following it up to a big wooden door. They walked in and Professor McGonagall left Tyler there while she went to find the headmaster. Quickly, Tyler found the perch, which Jacke spoke of and went to it but a voice made him jump.

"Magnificent, isn't he?"

"Who said that?"

"Over here" Tyler saw it was one of the portraits on the walls. "That's a nice phoenix isn't he? Dumbledore calls him Fawkes."

"Yes, he's very nice." Tyler went to the phoenix with his back turned to the portraits and made it look like he was petting the bird but took some ashes by scooping it up in the vile. "Nice meeting you Fawkes."

Then Professor Dumbledore came in and sat and requested Tyler to as well while Tyler put the vile inside his robes.

"Well, I have come to realize you set up quite a show today Mr. Solemn."

"Yes I did. I'm sorry Professor Dumbledore."

"Why did you do it?"

"Why?...Because I thought things got a little too quiet and tense after Christmas." Tyler chanced looking at Professor Dumbledore and couldn't help but realize that he had piercing eyes that sent chills down his spine and make his blood run cold.

"I see, well, Mr. Solemn, I will have to give you a week's detention and 60 points from Slytherin. Now off you go and I hope you won't repeat this again though I say in a way, it was quite amusing indeed."

"Bye sir." Tyler nearly broke into a complete run when he got off the staircase. They had another ingredient. Tyler did remember that he had a week of detentions to show for it but thought that it was worth it. He went to the broom cupboard and placed the vile in the ingredient sack next to the cauldron and corked it. He then went to the Slytherin common room where he bumped into Severus.

"Oh hi Severus. I didn't see you there. Are you getting ready for your upcoming NEWTS" (Nastily Exhausting Wizard Tests).

"Yes, I am Tyler. I'm glad I caught you actually. You've been very quiet and jumpy the last few days and now Matt tells me you set off fireworks and dungbombs. Are you okay?"

"Yeah I'm okay Severus and I appreciate the concern. It's just that the classes are getting harder."

Well don't worry my friend, for you'll get the hang of it. They'll get better over time. Well I best be off. Remember, if you ever need to talk then I will be here okay?"

"Okay, see you Severus."

Tyler continued upstairs but if he had looked back down then he would have seen Severus' calculating look. He collapsed on his bed with the hope that the hardest part of making the potion was over. For the potion would finish within 10 more days and there were only 3 ingredients left.

End of Chapter 9
