Quest of the Seekers: Elements of Transformation

Year One at Hogwarts

Chapter 12: Time for Sorrow and Hate

Tyler and Jacke made it to the courtyard ten minutes late and got a few words from Madam Hooch.

"Where have you two been?"

Jacke had taken the role of answering her. "We got lost."

"After five months of staying in the castle, you got lost?" said Madam Hooch in a tone that made it obvious that she didn't believe them one bit.

Tyler jumped in hoping to save what credibility was left in his best friend's ruse. "We took a wrong turn madam. We got turned around in a new corridor and lost our way on the other side of the castle."

"Well...okay. It seemed to have worked good. Don't repeat this again. Five points off Slytherin and Gryffindor house. Sit down for we were about to go over today's plan."

At the corner of Jacke's mouth, as they went to sit, he muttered, "Great cover, mate."

"I am a Slytherin after all Jacke." 'More than you think' muttered Tyler once he was out of his friend's earshot.

"Listen, Class!" started Madam Hooch after going back to her original spot. "Today, I won't be giving you procedures. I've taught you all of the basics and I'm given you all the cautions when you are taking off and landing. You will have free reign of flying today while I observe you all and who still has flaws in their techniques."

"Hey Tyler, do you want to have a little race to shake off that training" suggested Jacke.

"You bet. Two laps from that side of the castle" Tyler pointed to a place on the closest castle side. "To the Quidditch pitch and back again. That is if you are brave enough to challenge me."

"Challenge?" chuckled Jacke. "Have you forgotten who you are talking to? I love challenges. Look! Madam Hooch is getting ready to blow the whistle. When she does, go."

Madam Hooch blew the whistle and Jacke sped straight off the ground but Tyler was in hot pursuit.

They zoomed over to the castle walls to begin their race and then whipped off toward the edge of the Quidditch pitch, neck and neck, the entire time. Tyler tried to pick up speed but no matter what he did to pass Jacke, it seemed he just couldn't pass him. Tyler caught a look of concentration on Jacke's face when he chanced it. Apparently, Jacke was trying hard to pass Tyler too but the best the other was able to do was keep up with the other. Also, while on the second lap, Tyler noticed every one else stopped using their free time and were just hovering while watching tem race. On their way back to the wall to end the race, Tyler saw that Matt caught on to their race's finish line and mad a ribbon come out of his wand to represent the finish line where the other students started gathering. Tyler could feel the intensity of the race as the wind hit at him harder as he tried to increase his speed. Tyler and Jacke where in full force heading into the ribbon until...they both crossed it at the exact same time!

"Well I guess that this was a tie."

Jacke and Tyler were breathing hard and trying to get calm but they were still stimulated by the race. Tyler couldn't stay still anymore and just zoomed off and unsurprisingly, so did Jacke.

When the bell was due to ring any minute, Madam Hooch sounded the whistle, and she addressed the class.

"Well, I must say that you all have covered the basic rules of flying quite effectively and I am happy to say that you all seem like capable flyers to me." Then the bell sounded. "All right class, until next time. And Walker, Solemn, could I speak to the two of you, please?"

There were stares at the young friends from every one but they didn't pay a second mind. Tyler said he'd catch up with Matt later at DADA before he went to Madam Hooch.

"Are we in trouble?"

No, Mr. Solemn. I just wanted to comment on the flying that the two of you displaced today. I must admit that the skill you two displayed today was a rare sight to see indeed. I've only seen 2 more first year students that had such flying potential.

"Who were they Madam Hooch?"

"Well, if you must know, Mr. Walker, it was Mr. Falkner and Mr. Carter."

"Reggie and Brad?"

"Oh, I see you two are familiar with them."

"Yeah, they're our best friends."

After Tyler said this he could've swore that Madam Hooch, for a wild second, gave him a curious look but thought that he must've imagined it.

"Well, what I wanted to tell you was that I believe you boys should consider signing up for the house teams next term. There will be openings and you both might want to consider it. Ok, hurry on to class before you get late."

Tyler couldn't believe his ears. Madam Hooch thought he should try out for the Slytherin House Team. He had already wanted to go for it but hearing it from a teacher made it seem a hundred times better. He couldn't wait to let Reggie, Brad, Matt, Regalus and Severus know what just happened. So he waved bye to Jacke and headed to his DADA class to let Matt know first.

...

During Tyler's History of Magic class he let Brad know what happened after checking that the ghost teacher Professor Binns couldn't hear them.

"Wow, you too. Me and Reggie got the same when we were seeing which of us could make the sharpest turns at high speeds. Well Reggie won that contest but Madam Hooch was impressed with both of us, yesterday. We're sorry we didn't tell you guys. I guess the elemental training erased it from our minds."

"Don't worry. It's okay. I would've forgotten too if I had been in your shoes."

This had been an eventful day: discovering the cave, the training, and Hooch. What other things could happen today? Tyler didn't know it then but that night held a bigger climax then the new elementals felt all day.

...

During the feast Dumbledore had silenced everyone calling for their attention.

"I'm sorry to have to announce this to you all but I have very disastrous new to tell you all."

The whole student body was eyeing Dumbledore, and Tyler saw indeed that he had a very serious face, very different from the relaxed and calm face he had in his office when he went get the ash from Fawkes the Phoenix.

"Today, the sister of one of our dear students Amelia Bones and her husband were killed by followers of Lord Voldemort."

Tyler saw a 7th year Hufflepuff girl completely in tears while some of the students around her tried to comfort her.

"Let us try to be strong and remember not to succumb to Voldemort's power to divide us with fear. Staying together and being there for one another. Voldemort's power centers on solely dividing us to make us weaker but if we stay united then hope remains."

Tyler was hit hard by these words. He did indeed feel sorry for the Bones family. He glanced at the Hufflepuff table to once again see Amelia Bones sobbing uncontrollably. What could she be thinking know? Tyler cold see Brad's face was in deep sympathy for his fellow Hufflepuff. Then Tyler stared at the faces of the other house tables. Half of them had looks of sadness and sorrow. Tyler couldn't help but feel a little guilty pang in his stomach that wasn't from the food.

It was his own cousin, a close blood relative, who had generated this sorrow. He, along with his family wished Voldemort would stop but they know that it was hopeless to think he would on his own will. As far as Voldemort was concerned, he didn't have any family at all. If it got to Tom Riddle, a.k.a. Voldemort, that he has a grandfather, uncle and cousin in Britain, then he would undoubtedly seek us out and bring unwanted trouble.

However, as Tyler snapped out of the thought of his cousin, he noticed the other half of the school's faces. They had looks of anger and hate on them and worst yet, they were all pointing at the Slytherin Table.

Tyler looked at his own house's reactions. Severus had a blank face, Regalus had a matching face but his eyes were lower than Severus'. Matt, as usual, had an unreadable face but noticed he was staring back at the Gryffindor table. The other Slytherins had many kinds of expressions. Some didn't look like they cared, some had bored faces, some had the look that said they weren't going to have their emotions shown and a tiny few had little smirks.

After the feast, right before the food on the plates disappeared, Tyler risked a look at his elemental friends. Brad still had a look of sorrow, Reggie was looking at the table but Tyler could tell he was sorry for Amelia. Finally, Jacke had a blank stare on his face that he noticed was staring back at him. At this Tyler just had to breathe out a deep sigh.

After they were dismissed, the usually loud and excited Great Hall was quieter and more depressing than Tyler ever saw of it being emptied. Right before he headed toward the common room, he saw Jacke just standing against a wall on the staircase opposite of the corridor he needed to take.

"Hey Jacke," he said quietly.

"Hey Tyler." Jacke answered back in the same tone. "Look Tyler, I just want to ask you one thing. Are you and the other slytherins planning on having a party, tonight?"

Tyler looked at him with confusion. Just what was Jacke talking about. What kind of party could be planned right after a distressing announcement.

"What are you talking about?"

"I just heard from a few of the people at the other houses and from Brad and Reggie, that most of the people in the other houses think that the Slytherins are all having a party celebrating the announcement Professor Dumbledore gave tonight."

"What?!" Tyler couldn't believe what he just heard Jacke say.

Jacke's head shot down and tried to avoid his eyes. He was fidgeting but at that moment Tyler could care less.

"I can't believe you would think that I was going to party over the fact that a family was killed!"

"I'm sorry, okay."

"Sorry? SORRY?! You practically said I was going to sleep well after partying someone losing their sister and brother-in-law to Death Eaters and Voldemort."

It was very lucky that no one else was around the corridor for they would see that there would be a magical confrontation. For right at that moment, Tyler had let his defenses down and slipped.

A spark of electricity flicked dangerously in the space between Tyler and Jacke. Jacke seemed scared but a few moments later he made an intimidating face of anger matching Tyler's. This resulted in embers sparking and then bouncing off the floor. Neither had the impression that they were going to back down. Tyler really wanted to give him a good hex or even better, punch him. Then as Tyler saw the elements loose in form of them, noticing them for the first time, the whole time. Tyler shook his head out of it and just left for the common room leaving Jacke there breathing hard. While the once faint signs of great elemental power faded away.

It seems there is no escape for them to get out of the Gryffindor/Slytherin rivalry. The next chapter will have emotion as Tyler gets a big pep talk from someone who stuck him as the lonely type with no relation. "Divided Snake and Lion Reunited".
