Quest of the Seekers: Elements of Transformation

Year One at Hogwarts

Chapter 15: Sneaky Snakes Hear Things

The prospect of learning how to control natural elements would seem difficult but, according to what Reggie learned, it was easier than creating an element from scratch. He even said it wouldn't surprise him if we could manipulate them at our first session since our creations were such big successes.

They decided to wait about a week to make sure it was a good time. Classes were getting better for them and Tyler was really excelling in his Defense Against the Dark Arts classes (in theory only though). Professor Gellman didn't let the students practice spells often. He said this was due to letting them wait until their second year to do more spell work but Tyler didn't think so. Gellman looked like he didn't know what to do one minute and did the very next. Though he did learn a bit, he still was unhappy with not doing much magic.

"I think he's a bit useless isn't he?", said Tyler to Matt after they exited the classroom.

"Yeah. This class is not as much fun as History of Magic."

"Good one Matt."

"Why thanks Tyler. And you're absolutely right. Gellman isn't a good DADA teacher at all. He's a joke, oh, I just wish the curse would get to Gellman now."

"Curse? What curse is that Matt?"

"Oh, I heard that there is a jinx on the Dark Arts teaching job. Apparently, nobody lasts too long on it. I'm sure Gellman will be caught up with it soon."

"Really? Interesting."

They continued on Professor Gellman's teaching disaster until they got to the greenhouses for Herbology with the Ravenclaws. Professor Sprout, Head of Hufflepuff house and their Herbology teacher, started to partner students. Matt and Reggie were partnered with himself at a tray together.

Though Reggie knew that Tyler said that Matt wasn't as bad as he seemed he still put himself on alert. Tyler placed himself in the middle to try to, at least, work them together tolerantly. Matt seemed that he was just trying to start working so their work would end quicker.

They were picking quords at Greenhouse one today. According to Professor Sprout, the leaves cool down fevers when powdered and drunk with water while the quord itself, shaped like a giant pear, heal magic burnouts when eaten. The trick was to clip the leaves without damaging the quord or it would be worthless.

Tyler tried to make a conversation up between Reggie and Matt but only managed them to ask for tools from the other. Only to Tyler did either of them have casual conversation. After several minutes of trying to get Matt to talk friendly with Reggie, Tyler just gave up trying.

...

After the bell rang, Tyler hung back a little to speak with Reggie. "Reggie, you could give Matt a chance, you know."

"I do know. It's just that I can't forget what happened."

"What, happened?"

"Well, you weren't around, but Matt did put a dirty trick on a girl by turning her ears into cactuses with a Crimson Cactus Hex but I stepped in to defend her and almost cane to sparks and blows with him. It happened around last November."

"Oh...well I can see why you're hesitant. Maybe I should have another talk with Matt. Well, I'll see you later Reggie."

"Okay, back at you."

Then Reggie left with the Ravenclaws for their next class while Tyler went to catch up with the other Slytherins for History of Magic. Tyler and the other Slytherins got to the History of Magic room three minutes early and went in to get seats before the bell. Tyler chose a seat next to Matt so he could get a talk.

"Matt, can we talk?"

"Sure. About what, Tyler?"

"Well, can I ask you why you don't like Reggie, Brad or Jacke?"

"Why I don't like them? That's an easy answer. Because they don't like me back."

"How come?"

"They're a part of the houses that hate us so I try to cause them trouble as they cause us the same thing."

Tyler did have to agree on that point. The houses did cause trouble but Slytherin House did start it half the time. This rivalry is very confusing.

"Matt, you know, just forget it."

Then and there Tyler decided to accept the fact that he will always be in the middle of his fellow slytherins and his friends. He thought that it might be the only way that it will come to pass and he should get used to it. It will always be his friends vs. his slytherin mates and he'll keep neutral when those times will happen. Maybe someday it'll change between Jacke, Brad, Reggie and Matt, Regalus, Severus but it won't be soon. The rest of the class started to file in and, after waving to Brad, Professor Binns started the usual routine in drowning the class to a blurry sleep.

...

It had finally come at last. It was the day that the young elementals have been waiting for. The day they start training to manipulate natural elements. With the thrill of the approaching training session in the afternoon, Tyler thought time was going very slow. He also could've swore that his watch wasn't moving at all and when he checked he noticed it was because it looked it broke. He switched to a regular hand watch when he went to his dorm after classes.

He spent the rest of the time in the common room on a couch. It was already 5:00 and the four of them decided to get to their 'cave' at 5:30 so Tyler decided to leave at ten after. He was just drawing his astronomy chart when Severus sat by him.

"Do you need help with that, Tyler?"

"No, I'm okay Severus. So what bring you here to me?"

"Well, I wanted to ask you something Tyler."

"Okay. Go ahead. I'm listening."

"Well, you have become...somewhat...of a little brother to me."

"Yeah, I think of you in the same way. You always try to see that I'm okay here."

"Well, on May 1st I'm going to take some wizarding camera photos for mementos and I want you to be in a group photo with three other good friends."

"Really? Of course I would. Wait. Who are the other three people in this friend photo?"

"Oh, the photo will be me, you, Matt and Regalus outside on the grounds near the lake at 3:30 sharp."

"Oh, ok. Sure. May 1st, you have a little brother in your collection of school mementos. Did the others already agree to do this?"

"Yeah. You know...out of all the years I've been here I gotta say that I never had someone that challenged me yet fully respected me all the same. That wasn't intimidated by me and yet cared about me like you. You and Matt are the only ones since Regalus that liked me for me other than my abilities."

"Well, whoever only hung around with you for only that reason were fools and didn't know what they were missing. You're funny, protective, a little hot tempered and blind sometimes but that's what's great about you."

Severus left for the dorms and Tyler looked at his watch to see that the time was then to leave so he put his chart and quill in his bag and left the common room.

He decided to take the corridor that led off the west side of the castle to get to the exit closest to the lake. He was on the corridor that led to the exit when he heard voices on the corridor that led to the exit and they were in a tone that made it clear that it was secret stuff. He tried to slip by unnoticed to the figures he saw ahead by trying to go on an alternate route until he recognized Regalus' older brother Sirius' voice. There he was with the other marauders and a girl in red hair. Tyler hid on the opposite side of the previous corner to listen and observe without notice.

"I don't know about you all but this marauder is joining for sure. James, you gotta be joining for what happened to your parents."

"Yeah you're right Padfoot. I won't let Voldemort get away with this. Lily, are you considering Professor Dumbledore's offer?"

"Well part of me is saying it's to dangerous but the other is saying that I was meant to join to stop all this madness."

"Well, I'm not going to let you all go alone. Without me the two of you would get in trouble all the time or could get yourselves killed."

"My, aren't you the faithful one Moony," said James glumly. "Wormtail, what about you. You joining up with us?"

"Listen guys. You know I'll go with you to the face of death to tease him but this is different. I don't think I'm strong enough like all of you."

"That's ridiculous Peter. Everyone has their faults but all people have their own unique strengths. I'm sure you'll find it by joining up with the order."

Peter looked like he was in a troubling deep thought and Tyler felt deep pity for him.

"Well...I'll do it. Surviving out there can't be different than surviving all I've been through here."

"Yeah especially through Snape's antics to get us expelled. I can honestly say that I hope he'll be at the end of my wand out there."

Tyler suddenly became angry, completely taken at Sirius Black. 'I know Severus has his faults but he is not at war with the marauders every waking second and doesn't even mention the marauders unless they are mentioned or appear and yet Black ridiculed him and he is not even the topic of conversation, whatever it is' thought Tyler. It took a lot of will power to not jump out and lash at him.

"Well that's settled. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs plus the lovely Lily Evans are members of the Order of the Phoenix."

'Order of the Phoenix?' thought Tyler.

"Well thanks for the flattery James. C'mon, let's go to the common room to discuss this further."

The red haired girl and the marauders left toward Gryffindor Tower while Tyler stood there reminiscing on what was said. What was this Order of the Phoenix and what did it have to do with his cousin? Tyler would've pondered longer had he not realized he still had to meet his friends. So he continued down the path and came out of the west side of the castle, near the lake.

End of Chapter 15

Nightlit: Glad to see you're still looking at my story and I hope you still continue your story regardless the lack of reviews you have so far.

Author Notes:

This is the end of chapter 15. The marauders just revealed they're joining the order and although Tyler doesn't understand what it is, we do don't we? Also it seems that Severus is holding his last bit of time at Hogwarts close to him like any other wizard in the other houses. It just goes to show us that Slytherins are human too and in my opinion, the most interesting house there is at Hogwarts. The next chapter is coming soon. "Controlling the Power of Nature". The elementals learn the technique to learn how to manipulate their elements when they are already are existing. Now I know what you will be thinking. How is Tyler going to practice when there is not electricity to practice on at Hogwarts? Well that something you're going to have to figure out on your own but not me because I alone know. Also there will be a little conflict that comes out of nowhere. Please Review and I will let it be known that bad reviews are allowed too. I'm a reasonable writer and I know that you sometimes don't get reviews that you like to read. Enjoy.
