Quest of the Seekers: Elements of Transformation

Year One at Hogwarts

Chapter 16: Controlling the Power of Nature

Tyler crossed the grounds until the edge of the lake was in sight. Once he got there he tried to act as casual as possible so nobody in the area thought he looked suspicious. He got to the rock valley where luckily no one was present. He levitated the rock out of the entrance (meaning that the others were already here) and climbed in before replacing the rock. Once he made it to the cavern he got jumped by Jacke.

"Tyler! What took you so long? We were beginning to think you weren't coming."

"Sorry, I got held back by a few things."

"Like what?" said Brad coming up from behind Jacke with Reggie.

"The Marauders and a girl held me up with a conversation but I managed to get by."

"Oh well then, let's get started. Reggie, would you be so kind as to tell us the way we have to train this time?"

"Glad to Jacke. Well let's see." He again had his scanning face as he looked over the training procedure in 'Harness the Powers of the Earth' and spoke again. "All right, well we first have to be near a natural source of our elements. Meaning, for example, Brad, you stand near the lake. Jacke, you stand near one of the lit torches for the cave that we brought in for this place. I should stand near the entrance because of the big breezes that come through it."

Tyler however stopped Reggie from continuing. "Er...sorry Reggie, but how am I going to train without a lightning power?"

"Well, I was going to mention that before you interrupted."

"Sorry Reggie. I didn't mean..."

"Forget it. I did get you something that should do just fine."

Reggie went to a corner of the cavern to where a giant cloth seemed to be covering something. He picked it up and brought it to Tyler and pulled off the cloth. It was a small water tank that had a creature resembling a snake with fins in water. Tyler was lost on what this was about.

"What is that thing Reggie?"

"This is an electric eel. I got one by Professor Gellman. I asked if he had any creatures with electric abilities for background research and he gave me this eel for 'wanting to expand learning beyond the classroom'" Reggie said quoting with his fingers.

"So this thing makes lightning?" asked Jacke in a tone that made it clear he didn't believe it.

Just then visual lightning sparks surrounded the eel destroying all doubt that Tyler was starting to get of Reggie's idea.

"Well now that we all have natural elements to work with, we could continue." He went right back to referring to the book. "Next, we have to visualize us controlling the present elements with our minds then let it happen for real. The feeling is not too different than when we were conjuring," Reggie finished by slamming the book shut.

Jacke was ready in his eyes. "All right then, let's get to it mates."

They separated to be near their elements. Tyler placed himself on the floor near the eel and started to concentrate. He visualized moving the sparks from the eel and sure enough the sparks were obeying him. He visualized them forming a giant sphere and sure enough that's what they did. He started to have more fun and split it in two and made them dance around in the air. Tyler was feeling as free as a flying hippogriff with his power. It was getting easier by the second which made him believe that Reggie was right in starting with the hard part and moving on the easiest part later after mastering the feeling.

When he thought of Reggie, Tyler moved his sights to his friends to see their progress. Brad made jets of water shoot upward like a fountain. Sometimes he made the water hover in the air for a while before he let them fall back down. Brad had a very entertained look on his face. Apparently, he was having a good of a time as Tyler was.

Next, he put his sight on Reggie to see how he was doing. He had the air concentrated in a mini tornado and it seemed like he was trying to lift all the rocks next to him with it. However, like Brad and himself, he seemed to be having fun. Tyler could see that the more Reggie hung around with them the more looser he got on adventure as Tyler did with opening to people.

Jacke was standing at a torch that used to be lit. The flame was around Jacke. He had taken the huge flame and made a circle of miniature flames glowing around him. His red hair gave the impression of a group of flames dancing around a human sized leader. He had the usual gleeful smile that was one of the things Tyler thought was fun about him. He seemed to be in control of the fire as Tyler was of the lightning. Tyler then looked at his watch.

"Listen guys. I know we're enjoying the time of playing with the elements but we're already out of time. It's already 6:15. I guess my delay really shortened our time more than we thought. I don't want to get caught by any of the teachers or prefects after a good time like this."

"Well I'm surprised at you Tyler. You seem to have gotten some responsibility. Or have you? Who are you and what have you done to Tyler Solemn?"

Jacke and Tyler bursted into laughter while Brad chuckled shaking his head. "The real question would be what happened to our Reginald (Reggie) Falkner? He is not that funny."

"But seriously mates we do have to go. Tyler was right."

"There's our Reggie," said Jacke.

They got out of the rock valley and were back to the lake on their way to the castle. They started to speed up because 1st years weren't allowed to be out of the common rooms beyond 6:30 at these times.

...

They made it to the castle with only a second to spare before a storm started but too late to get back without the worry of getting in trouble. They went across corners carefully to avoid the sight of any prefects or teachers. They didn't run into anybody and got to the Great Hall entrance safely. Reggie spoke up breaking the silence, whispering.

"Well this is my stop. My common room is across the left corridor from this door. I'll see you later."

Reggie disappeared down the corridor after checking the coast was clear. Then Brad talked after they were sure that it was safe.

"Look, my common room is at the 2nd floor past the 'aisle of fruits'. I'll see you tomorrow."

He trudged down the stairs opposite them leaving Tyler and Jacke alone. They kept creeping down the corridors until they reached the east side of the castle. They reached the point where they were to separate but before they could say good night there was a voice calling out to them.

"What are you two out of your common rooms?!"

That voice completely startled Tyler just as a thunderclap flashed and it came through a window and shocked the figure. Tyler was completely shocked by the voice that he accidentally manipulated the lightning outside to defend him. What was even more shocking was that a ball of fire hit the figure at the exact same time that his lightning hit. Apparently, like Tyler, Jacke had subconsciously manipulated the fire from a torch nearby to come to his aid.

"What, what...what did we do?"

"I don't know Jacke," said Tyler in a shaky voice.

They went to the figure and dropped their jaws and started stuttering, unable to make a decent word. The person they struck was Professor Gellman.

"Whoa,...Jacke we hit Gellman."

"No, no."

He backed up and hit the torch that held the flame he manipulated causing it to fall and hit the floor with a loud, hollow clang.

"We got to get out of here. The teachers could've heard that sound for sure."

Jacke broke in a run to the Gryffindor Tower but Tyler stayed behind.

'I won't let any of you guys get in trouble by me,' thought Tyler to himself. He pulled out his wand and yelled with all his might. "Obliviate!"

The spell hit Gellman on the head and Tyler immediately went down the stairs to the dungeons. He ran to the Slytherin panel in hopes that Jacke had already made it to safety. "Wormwood"

The panel slid open and Tyler came in and tried to sit like nothing was wrong with a roll of parchment and quill until, several minutes later when the Slytherin prefects came in with Professor Reckler.

Everyone turned to their direction while Tyler went and joined Matt and Regalus on the opposite couch to make it seem that he was curious.

"Attention! We have some dire news. Professor Gellman was struck by lightning and burned severely. It seems he won't return to teaching here and was moved to St. Mungo's."

"Looks like it caught up to him," said Matt to Tyler.

End of Chapter 16

Nightlit: Good grasp on your story. I hope you were close in guessing what Tyler was going to practice with. If not don't be too sad because this idea just popped into my head as I was writing it.

Author Notes:

Well, here is the end of 16. This chapter marks the end of the appearance of Professor Gellman. To answer some questions: No he didn't die, he only got injured and Tyler modified his memory. How will Reggie and Brad react when they find out what happened? The next chapter will have shocking reactions to Gellman's "accident" and it will have Severus Snape putting together his best mementos for when he leaves the school. Chapter 17 coming soon "Snape's Goodbyes."

Also on a non-related note there has been something that has jumped to my attention. It is the connection that Harry, Ron and Hermione have to James, Sirius and Lily. Ron and Hermione are much like James and Lily. They both argue much like Harry saw in Snape's pensieve though not as roughly and have the obvious feeling that they have feelings for one another. Ron is a pureblooded, anti-Slytherin, Snape hating, quidditch loving Gryffindor while Hermione is a muggleborn, smart, beautiful girl against vile behavior like Lily was in the memory. Harry more resembles Sirius over his father. They both have a dark family, seem to be the objects that Snape hates the most, popular at their times at Hogwarts and had been both wrongfully accused by the ministry. That's all I'm saying.
