Chapter 4: Ground Rules

They walked to Dumbledore's office in science. Their minds churning over what they could have done wrong.
They reached the gargoyles flanking the entrance to Professor Dumbledore's office they saw Professors' McGonagall and Snape standing there, waiting for them. Then it clicked in James and Sirius' minds: Snape had told on them, just like he had done when they were in school. Snape had told the headmaster that they had been taunting him.
"Follow me," was all McGonagall said. She turned to the stone gargoyles, whispered the password, and walked up the stairs to Professor Dumbledore's office.
"Sit," McGonagall said stonily, as they stepped into Dumbledore's office. They sat.
Professor Dumbledore walked down the stairs that lead up to his loft. He sat down behind his desk and stared at the four boys sitting in front of him.
"Can you please explain to me what you did to Professor Snape this morning?" Professor Dumbledore asked.
"All we did was told him that we did not like his tone of voice." James said indignantly.
"And...." Dumbledore said expectantly.
"We might have hung him in the air, a little bit," James said.
"You are students," Professor Dumbledore said calmly. "Therefore, you are to listen to the professors."
"But, we would be his age if we had not died." James said.
"I don't care," he said. "You are to listen to your professors-all of you professors-even Professor Snape."
"Okay," the four boys said in unison.
"Now," Dumbledore said, calmly still, "For your punishments-"
"We all already have detention with Snape." James said.
"Really?" Dumbledore said. "I had not been aware of that. So no punishment then. You may leave."
They all walked to the door before Dumbledore called out to them.
"One more thing," Dumbledore said, "I must insist that you call your teachers by their given names. Not any nicknames you have made up to spite them."
James, Sirius, Harry, and Ron grinned and walked out into the hall.
"All of you will serve your detention with me Wednesday night, at 6:00." Snape said.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world," James said.
Snape walked briskly to the dungeons.
They walked into Gryffindor common room laughing at the paled expression Snape had on his face when Lily, Hermione, and Ginny came up to them.
"We need to lay down some ground rules," Hermione said.
"What about?" James asked.
"Yes, my sweet about what?" Sirius said putting his arm around Hermione.
"About that," Hermione said lifting Sirius' arm off her shoulder.
"You need to realize that we have boyfriends," Ginny said.
"And that there is no chance that we would ever go out with you," Lily said.
"Oh," Sirius said, looking sad and crestfallen.
"Wait a minute," James said to Lily "You don't have a boyfriend."
"Yes, as a matter of fact," Lily said indignantly, "I do now."
"Who? I'll kill him," James said, looking around the common room.
"Dean Thomas," Lily said.
"What?!" James and Harry said together.
"He asked me out in Arithmancy," Lily gushed.
"But-but-but we are going to be together eventually, you know that, everybody knows that. Why would he do that to me?" James said, almost to himself.
"I have to go," Lily said angrily as she turned and walked to her dorm room.
Ginny and Hermione turned after glaring angrily at James and ran up the stairs to Lily's dorm.
"Lily, what is the matter," Hermione asked.
"I don't know why I told him," she said through tears, "I knew he would react that way."
"Lily," Ginny said, "What is the matter? Calm down."
"It's James," Lily said. "I didn't say I would go out with Dean to make him angry. I did it because I like Dean."
"Oh," Hermione said, "He will get over it. Why don't we get him a girlfriend? Me and Ginny, you know, we could set him up with Lavender Brown or someone."
"NO!" Lily said. "Don't set him up. Please."
"Why?" Ginny asked, "Do you like James?"
"Oh, gosh," Lily said, "I hope not. But now that I know that it is inevitable that we are going to have that James clone, it just seems like I can't stop thinking about him. And even before that. You know? I don't want to like James Potter. If I fall in love with him, I will feel like the biggest hypocrite in the world."
