Way Back When
I heard them from above. They were arguing. I don't ever think I've seen them fight like this before. She's upset, hurt, and not just angry because he's done something stupid. I should go down there, no, she would just embarrass me and tell me to leave. Then he would smirk and mentally mark another battle won in his favor.
Wash closes the hatch and descends the latter to his bunk. He sits on the bed twirling a small brown dinosaur.
Zoe and Mal are in the kitchen. Zoe is standing a little too close to where the knives are kept. Mal, taking this into account, begins to back away from her slowly with his hands raised.
"Just give me fair warning before you reach for a knife." Mal smirks and leans on a counter.
Zoe sends Mal a glare that could melt steel. "Don't need one."
"What's so gorram wrong with what I did?" Mal steps closer to Zoe . She backs away from him and walks to the kitchen table. Mal follows.
"How many times have you said it before? She's not part of our business." Zoe pushes a chair under the table.
Mal steps back from the table. "Well, I want her there. Maybe she can be of some use of Persephone, she knows the place well."
Zoe crosses her arms in front of her. "I'm thinking this has less to do with the job and more to do with the tongue wrestling you two were doing on the bridge."
Mal walks around the table toward Zoe. "Oh, I see what's going on. Are you more mad about Inara going to the meet or what you saw on the bridge?" Mal laughs. "Zoe, are you jealous?"
"I'm going back to the knives now." Zoe walks toward the knives.
Mal runs to make it there before she does. "Whoa there now. " He stands in front of her with his arms raised. "Care to let me in on what's running through that brain of yours?"
Zoe leans on the counter and crosses her arms. "What happened to shipboard romances complicate things?"
Mal leans on the counter and crosses his arms. "I guess seeing you and Wash together changed my mind a bit." Mal smiles Zoe does not.
Mal takes a step closer to Zoe. "What's this about?"
"Nothing." Zoe turns her back on him and walks toward the door.
Mal follows her. " Are you still mad 'cause I gave you and Wash a hard time?"
Zoe stops and turns around to face him. "Just drop it." Zoe turns around and starts walking again.
Mal follows at her heels. " Cause if it is, remember I made that rule even before Wash set foot on this boat."
Zoe stops and faces him. "Yeah, way back when it was just you and me." She turns around and leaves. Mal is left standing in the middle of the kitchen watching her form disappear down the dark corridor.
