Chapter 11
NO POV:
"Ok, Matt. Is that everything?" asked Mr. McGuire quickly scanning around his son's room.
"Yes," said Matt sadly. Then he picked up the final packing box from his room and headed downstairs. He passed by Lizzie's room along the way, and glanced in to see what she was doing. Lizzie was still packing up her ten billion things, very slowly.
"C'mon, son," said Mr. McGuire trying to get everyone to hurry. "We have to get all of this stuff into the moving van."
"I know, dad. I have everything all packed up. As for Lizzie...you should be complaining to her. She hasn't even started yet!" exclaimed Matt.
Matt walked out the front door and piled his final box into the moving van. Then he turned around and saw Lanny and Melina standing there. They had their hands behind their backs, and were smiling slyly. "Hey! What are you two up to?" asked Matt. "Lanny, I know you're just waiting to tell me. Shoot."
Lanny and Melina glanced at each other, and Melina nodded. Lanny revealed what he had hidden behind his back first. He pulled out a good pair of walkie talkies.
"Wow, Lanny! Thanks!" exclaimed Matt. His facial expressions were bright and happy. He gladly accepted the gift. "I don't know what to say." Lanny just looked at him, but Matt seemed to know what was going through his mind. "You're a good friend too, Lanny. Oh! I have something for you too. You know that back we had both saved up for a while ago, and then we gave it back, because it wasn't working right for us both to share one bike?" Lanny nodded. "Well, I've been saving up, and I re-bought it for you," said Matt. "Come here." Then they both ran to the garage, with Melina tagging along. There, in the middle of the garage, stood a perfectly polished bike. It was very nice looking. Lanny smiled and ran towards it, but before he climbed on, he looked at Matt, and pointed towards himself. "Yes, it's all yours," said Matt. Then, Lanny quickly jumped on, and sped away, and left a wave of thanks behind him.
Melina and Matt were left in the garage together, laughing as they watched how quickly Lanny had left once he discovered his present. "He should have fun with that," laughed Melina.
"It looks like he already is," commented Matt.
Then Melina looked at Matt. "I wasn't quite sure what to get you," she said, "but here," she said handing him a small package. Matt opened it in a rush.
"Wow!" he exclaimed. "A super small spying camera! Now I can really spy on my sister!"
"I thought you'd like it. It has all the latest technology for spying. I think you could get a nice shot of your new neighbors too. Be sure to give me the latest scoop on everything. I didn't get you that flashy new equipment for nothing, you know!" exclaimed Melina.
"Oh, I've got something to give you too," said Matt. "It was for your birthday and I was going to mail it. But now I feel bad that I don't have anything to give you. So I'll give it early."
Melina rolled her eyes. "Matt," she thought, "so unprepared."
"I'll be back," he said. Then he ran upstairs to Lizzie's room. "Lizzie," he said. "Um, I need a little favor."
"Look, I'm going through an emotional time right now. Leave me alone," cried Lizzie.
"Please?" asked Matt in the sweetest voice possible.
"I guess. Just tell me what it is first, you little rat," said Lizzie.
"Well, you see. Melina just um...she just gave me a...a...she gave me something. Well, I wanted to give her something, but don't know what to give her," said Matt blushing a little.
"Ah! You want to give something to...Melina," smiled Lizzie. Matt shyly nodded. "Oh, ok. I have an idea." Lizzie went rummaging through a jewelry box of her and pulled out a small ring. "Here," she said, "I'm tired of this, and besides, the color just clashes with most of my clothes. But here, give it to Melina."
"Thanks, sis," said Matt, taking the ring from Lizzie. He smiled at his sister's kindness and almost felt a little guilty for the future spying that he would do to her. He knew that his sister really wasn't tired of the ring. He knew it wasn't her favorite, but that she wasn't tired of it. "I guess Lizzie isn't so much of a lizard after all," thought Matt, "after all, she just saved my butt."
Matt ran back down to the garage and gave the ring to Melina. "Thanks, Matt!" exclaimed Melina. She glanced at the ring, quite pleased, and then put it on her finger. It was a pretty sterling silver ring, with a blue stone on it.
"No problem," said Matt.
"There was one more thing I have for you," said Melina. Matt looked at her questionly, and before he could say anything, Melina leaned over and planted a kiss on his lips.
Then after slowly moving back, Melina started to leave. "Wait," said Matt. Melina turned around quickly. "We'll keep in touch right?" asked Matt.
Melina smiled. "What do you think?" she asked. Then she left, leaving a statue-still Matt standing in the garage, surprised about what happened.
------------------------------
"Lizzie! I don't want to be all anxious, but we don't have all day. They're gonna take the truck soon. And if everything isn't all packed up, then all of your stuff is just going have to stay here for a while," said Mr. McGuire.
"Ok," said Lizzie, "just give me a minute."
"One minute," said Mr. McGuire. Then he walked away.
Lizzie started shoving the remainder of her goods into the packing boxes, and set them outside her door. Then she glanced around the room. "I guess this is everything," she said. Then she walked into her closet and noticed one cardboard box still there. She opened it up and saw that it was the stuff Gordo had mailed to her. Tears came to her eyes as she pulled out a picture of her and Gordo swinging on the tire swing at a park many years before that. She gently ran her finger across the photo, and smiled at the memory. A pang came to her heart as she thought about how much she missed Gordo and Miranda.
"Knock knock," said a familiar voice coming into the room. Lizzie quickly spun around, dropping the picture into the box and sealing it. She turned to see Miranda there, standing in the doorway.
"Miranda?" asked Lizzie quietly. Then she rose to her feet, and gave her friend a hug. "I haven't seen you in so long. I'm so sorry. Please forgive me. I said some hateful things to you that I never should've said. I've missed you so much!"
"So have I," said Miranda.
"Please forgive me?" asked Lizzie.
Miranda smiled. "Of course I do," she said. Then Miranda thought about asking something about Gordo, but just thought that it would start up a fight again. She didn't want to force Lizzie into anything. "I've got to go now," said Miranda, "and let you continue to pack. Your dad said you're just about ready to leave."
"You're right," said Lizzie. "But I'll give you a call when I arrive in Colorado. Then we can have a nice long talk." Lizzie heard her dad's voice from below. "I'd better go now," she said. "Thanks for coming over. I'll miss you." Then, Lizzie gave Miranda a farewell hug, a few tears were shed, and then they walked down to Lizzie's car, and Miranda left, waving behind her.
"Is that everything?" asked Mrs. McGuire. Lizzie took Gordo's memory box, and put it in the seat next to her.
"Now it is," said Lizzie. The whole family, jumped in the car, and Mr. McGuire started the engine. Then they slowly started leaving the place that they for so long had called home.
Lizzie looked behind her, down the street that she was so familiar with as it slowly passed by her. But in the distance, she thought that she saw someone that she hadn't seen in so long...someone that she missed so much...someone that meant the world to her, and it had taken her a while to realize just how much.
"Dad!" yelled Lizzie. "Stop the car. Just for a minute please. There is something that I have to do, and if I don't I'm going to regret it the rest of my life."
Mr. McGuire stopped the car, and Lizzie ran out, bringing Gordo's memory box with her. "Gordo!" she yelled, running down the street. She ran all the way, until she was face to face with an old friend. "Gordo," she repeated while catching her breath. Gordo slowly looked up from where he was standing, and looked her in the eyes. "There's something I have to tell you before I leave...I love you, Gordo. You mean the world to me. I've missed you this long period of time that we haven't seen each other. And I love you a lot...it just took me forever to realize how much you mean to me. Gordo, I know that I treated you wrongly. I'm sorry for what I've done to hurt you. I wasn't thinking. I was only thinking of myself. I do that too much, and it's high time that I change it. I just wish that I would've realized how much I love you, a long time ago. Here," said Lizzie handing Gordo the brown box. "I want you to have this back. Thank you for it though, it helped me realize how much I had hurt you. I'm truly and deeply sorry," said Lizzie crying, "I just wish that you could forgive me."
"Of course I do, Lizzie," said Gordo quietly. Lizzie's face immediately brightened. She slowly leaned in, and gave Gordo a kiss. Shivers went up and down each other's spines. They slowly backed away, and then Lizzie hugged Gordo.
"I've been such a fool," said Lizzie. "Let's start over."
"Deal," said Gordo.
"I've got to go now," said Lizzie. Then she started running away reluctantly.
"We'll still be friends," shouted Gordo.
"We'll keep in touch!" shouted Lizzie. "Love you!"
Then Lizzie jumped in the car, and they started once again, on their move to Colorado. Lizzie felt much better knowing that her friends were there for her once again. And she promised herself that even though she'd be a ways away, she'd be there for them as well. She found in her heart that she had always loved Gordo as more than a friend. She found that she was willing to give a deeper relationship between them a chance. As long as Gordo still wanted her, she knew that things would work out fine.
