Disclaimer: If I actually owned Star Trek, the Voyager and Enterprise
series never would have been taken off the air.
Hey, ya'll. I can't believe it's only been a week since I updated. It seems like a year, I've been so busy. I'd like to thank my friends, who still loyally review. And that's about it, so on with the story.
"Captain Picard, we are receiving a transmission from the Enterprise. Where would you like it routed to?" A Klingon's voice scratched over the comm system in Captain Picard's quarters.
"If you could route it to my quarters, that would be wonderful," said Picard. He put down his book and turned to the viewscreen in his quarters. The Kahless had been traveling for a day and a half at the highest velocity it was possible for the ship to maintain, warp 9. They were only 12 hours out from the rendezvous point with Enterprise, but Captain Picard still thought it was odd that they were calling. His thoughts were interrupted when Beverly Crusher appeared on the viewscreen.
"There you are, Captain. Those Klingons have had me on hold for five minutes! They may have cloaking technology and impressive weapons, but they don't have the best communication technology, that's for sure."
"They also have lousy medical technology." Said Picard sadness tingeing his voice.
A sad shadow also passed over Beverly's face as she remembered the reason for her call. "I was told about Ensign Rey. The Romulan medic told me about her condition a few days ago. I don't really like the sound of her condition, but I won't be able to make a diagnosis until I see her. I do have some good news, though."
"Yes?" Said Picard, his eyebrows raised and his expression brightening.
"Starfleet finally found Ensign Rey's complete files. They found them in the backup memory buffer in the computer banks of her last posting on the USS Phoenix. Enterprise received them yesterday, and I have already updated the medical files. Did you know that she is half Vulcan? That's why her scans were inconsistent the other day before you left."
"Yes, Beverly, of course I knew. She told me on the shuttlecraft after we left the ship. I thought you had done plastic surgery on her ears." Picard answered; slightly surprised that Beverly hadn't figured it out earlier.
"No, I never even saw her ears. She had her hair over them, now that I think about it. All I did when she came into Sickbay was tell her how to fix them herself. And all along she didn't even need it!" Dr. Crusher was torn between laughter at the irony and seriousness that she hadn't realized the truth earlier. Seriousness won out and she continued. "Jean- Luc, as soon as we rendezvous, I need Ensign Rey to be transported directly to sickbay. It is imperative that I see her ASAP, stasis pods or drug induced comas or not."
"Aye, Aye, Doctor," said Captain Picard, "I will tell them. Picard out." The Starfleet symbol appeared on the screen for a few seconds until the screen went blank. Picard still watched the screen, as if staring at it could make pictures appear, or friends long gone talk to him from the depths of oblivion.
A noise from the corridor shattered the stillness. Picard jumped in his seat and grabbed the book he had put down 10 minutes ago. He was again absorbed in the story seconds later.
Hours later, the Kahless and the Enterprise reached the rendezvous point. As soon as they had reached transporter range, Dr. Crusher insisted on going over the Kahless and getting Ensign Rey out of stasis. "She needs to be supervised by a doctor to be taken out, if the head injuries are as serious as you say they are!" were her exact words, and Picard couldn't, in conscience, keep her away.
Her worries were unnecessary, because the transfer from stasis to the Enterprise went without a hitch. The Romulans and Ambassador Spock were assigned guest quarters. Farewells were said between the Klingons and Romulans, as unlikely as it sounds, the two groups had actually made friends.
Captain Picard hurried to sickbay as soon as the Kahless had departed and he had relieved Commander Riker from command and given Data the bridge. Dr. Crusher was scanning furiously around Zandile's head. She looked up when Picard came in, but continued to scan. The results of the scans were starting to appear on the computer display above the biobed. Beverly finally put down the tricorder and looked up a Picard again.
"She has a very severe concussion. I can heal it without permanent damage, but it may take her awhile to recover. If she weren't half- Vulcan I would have had a much more depressing diagnosis. That Romulan medic was very wise to put her in stasis instead of risking further damage by healing it or not taking any action for three days. He also did a very good job of healing the disrupter burns. If I hadn't known better, I would not have known she was ever shot."
"That is very good to hear, but I would like to talk to Ensign Rey. Can you wake her up?" Said Picard, very relieved.
"Oh, no, Captain. She can't wake up right now. It would do far too much damage. Her condition is stable, but any little thing could cause further brain damage. Vulcan brains are very resilient, but they are not immune to damage."
"When will she be able to wake up?"
"I don't know. Maybe I you leave me alone I could ascertain that." Said Beverly, getting annoyed.
Before Picard could reply, Ambassador Spock strolled into Sickbay. Beverly turned to see who else had come to bother her, and said, "Is there anything I can do for you, Ambassador?"
Spock folded his hands into the sleeves of his loose robe and calmly replied, "Actually, Doctor, I may be able to help you. Vulcans, as you well know, have very resilient brains. Very delicate, too. You may be able to heal the concussion, but Ensign Rey probably won't recover until a Vulcan performs a complicated mind meld to help her come out of the coma. I have been told that she has not been trained in Vulcan mind techniques, so she will need a trained Vulcan to help her come out because she herself does not have the mind discipline. A family member would be best, but any Vulcan capable of mind melding could help, too."
"We don't know who her Vulcan family members are," said Picard. He paced in frustration.
"Maybe there is something in the files we received two days ago," said Beverly calmly. She was gathering medical instruments to heal the concussion and listening to the conversation at the same time. "You can use my office and computer, Jean- Luc," she said, pointing in the direction of the office.
"Thank you, Beverly." Picard started toward the office, gesturing for Spock to follow. He nodded to Dr. Crusher and followed Captain Picard to the office.
I guess this is a good place to stop. I would have added more, but no one is reviewing. Why should I reward you readers if you don't review?
OK, here's a one time only offer! Even if you HATE my story, I invite you to review and give me all the crap you want to. Spill your guts. Just review. And if you review and like it, goody for me. I will send me a review, good, bad or comments on the weather; I will send you online birthday cake from the party we had today.
And if you have been reviewing FAITHFULLY all along or as you read after it's posted for awhile as I usually do, just forget the pleading and begging and go right to the online birthday cake.
